“A beautiful place to stay”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

We have driven a long way to stay in the OLV but is definitely worth it. It is such a lovely cosy place to stay. We are always on the look out for somewhere different to stay and this fits the bill as it is full of character. The Cornish food waiting for us on arrival was most welcome.
Dave and Lizzie are so welcoming and made so many suggestions of places to visit we could have stayed a month.
We used the car to explore the area and had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday visiting parts of Cornwall we had never seen before.
If we lived closer we would love to have the occasional short break here at different times of the year - cannot say better than that really.

Thank you Judith for your really lovely review. It was great to see you again and to meet Robbie, and especially to enjoy the outdoor play at Pentillie Castle with the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Hope to see you again soon.
Best wishes,
Lizzy and Dave

The Old Luggage Van, as the name suggests, is a converted GWR luggage van. It sleeps 2 in a comfortable bed at one end of the van and sits 2 in front of the TV and wood burner at the other. In between are the kitchen, the bathroom, toilet and shower. All pretty cozy and perfectly adequate for 2.

Cons:
None. Depending on when you go to bed and get up, you'll be woken by trains going past about 10 feet from your head, but that's hardy a con. It's not spacious, but so what? The kitchen facilities are limited, but there's a pub just up the road.

My week in the Old Luggage Van exceeded my (high) expectations. It's been really cleverly and tastefully renovated and I felt at home as soon as I walked up the steps. I came by train from London and was met off the train by Lizzie's sister. When I left the full farewell committee turned out and I was helped onto the platform with my luggage. For all that the platform is a few yards from the windows, it feels very private when you're inside the OLV and you very quickly get used to the sound of the trains passing by and there's nothing like that great feeling knowing you're snug at home and those weary looking passengers might have another hour ahead of them. There's a well stocked village shop less than 10 minutes walk away, so you can spend your money locally and don't need to lug a lot of food with you. I phoned them in advance to check what kinds of things they sell and they'll keep a newspaper for you if you ask. You can do lots of easy walks from the OLV and maps etc are provided. Needless to say, day trips by train are ... a doddle.

Dear Victoria,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write another review on Trip Advisor. It is really appreciated. It's great to have you and your family here. We hope you weren't too disturbed by the work going on with the footbridge. It's all finished now; it sounds like it will be Hayle's turn in November - they've got major structural works planned on the viaduct, which might be interesting to see.
Thanks again and look forward to seeing you again soon.
Best wishes,
Lizzy

This book is full of unique attractions from beginning to end, and along with the inclusion of Rail Holiday, this book also offers lots of varied places to stay also. You don’t have to be a rail enthusiast to appreciate a holiday in one of these vintage rail carriages but if you are, you’ll feel like you are in rail heaven! Despite the rarity of this accommodation, I was very
surprised at how reasonably priced a stay here actually is, and with more carriages planned for the future, there is even more chance to experience one of Cornwall’s very first glamping sites. David and Lizzy and their two lovely children Walter & Poppy together with the help of various dedicated members of the family all have played their part in making sure Rail Holiday will be a holiday experience you will never forget. Check out availability on their website, and get booking!

Unique environment - scrupulously clean & very comfortable. I had been worried about train noise (train spotter husband ridiculously excited!) but soon got used to it. A good base for south East Cornwall - will come for the week next time!

We recently stayed in the fairly newly restored Mevy carriage on my sons birthday. The carriage is lovely with lots of lovely home comforts and extras such as cosy throws and blankets, toys, swing ball and lovely local wine, biscuits and apple juice left at the start of the week. Hosts Lizzy and Dave are very welcoming and helpful and even brought a birthday card and gift over for our son. There is plenty of parking if you bring your car, and the train is obviously seconds away with regular services. The Mevy also has a ramp up to it if you have walking difficulties and Lizzy and Dave also provided a mobility scooter free of charge which was very handy to get to the local park and also into the village.

The beds were very comfortable and cosy and the bath is large and the whole carriage well equipped.

The local area has lots to offer, with looe being around 7 miles ish and several other beaches nearer.

We had a fantastic time and will definitely return.
