Priory Cottage Bed & Breakfast
Reviewed 27 October 2011

We were looking for a place to stay after an all night plane ride to Heathrow/London and to begin our UK visit in Bath. We were very lucky to select The Priory Cottage. Jackie Moss,(and husband, Martin) the Host/Owner, understood our situation of jet-lag and driving on the left-side stress and had a room ready for us well before the normal check-in time so we could take a caught-up nap. She provided us with directions and recommendations for dinner and sight seeing throughout our stay. Having grown-up in Bath, she knows how to approach the crowds that are Bath and how to negotiate the traffic. She has extensive knowledge of the area and can share with you what to see and how to get there.
The Priory Cottage is out of town off a main road with parking next to the house. It's an exceptional setting and has a great deal of charm. On Jackie's recommendation we took the bus to Bath which worked well in a parking challenged environment, and had the added benefit of a "tour" through the countryside. The bus stops at the cottage's front gate both ways - absolutely pain-free!
The breakfast featured locally sourced products including Aunt Beryl's homemake jam and Martin's mother's tomatoes. There is a relaxing guest lounge we used to unwind at the end of the day.
If one gets the sense that we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend the cottage. You're right.

We stayed for one night with a couple of friends from NZ. We were welcomed with tea/coffee and cakes. Rooms were spotless and we had a lounge to ourselves.

Jackie was very helpful and chatty and the breakfast was superb - with the best croissants we've ever tasted.

We cannot speak too highly of the place.

This B & B is very close to where the Roman Baths are located. Jackie welcomed us with delicious banana loaf. It was so good she gave me the recipe and I made it back home. Their home was very warm and cozy and felt like you were in a home, not a hotel. The breakfast was very good. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who needs a place to stay near Bath.

We stayed 2 nights in August as we were impressed with the high standard reviews in Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, Jackie made us feel welcome. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. The bedroom was cosy with a nice view of the garden. Its quiet and peaceful so a good night's sleep is guaranteed. The chocolates on the pillow were a nice touch!

The hosts are great fun so plenty of laughs are guranteed.

We had intended to use the Cottage as base to explore Bath but but we found loads to do in Freshford and the surrounding area. Freshford is very small but it does have a great pub/restaurant called the Inn. The dressed crab should not be missed. There is a lovely walk along the river Avon through Avoncliff and onto Bradford on Avon along the Kennet & Avon canal. The walk takes 2 hours through some gorgeous countryside and it is mostly flat so it is easy to do. Bradford was real find and well worth making a detour to visit. Buses travel from Bradford to Bath every 30 minutes or so so we found we could pack a lot into a 2 day stay at Priory Cottage.

Anyone lucky enough to find accommodation at Priory Cottage and who are travelling by bus from Bath should note that the last bus on weekdays is around 5.45pm. There is the option of the train but it is a 15 - 20 minute walk up a step hill.

We are already planning a return visit.

Our first visit was in 2007. We were (and still are) overwhelmed by the beauty of Priory Cottage and surroundings and by Jackie and Martin’s genuine friendliness and warm hospitality – outstanding!

Jackie and Martin are ideal hosts: always making you feel welcome and giving you good tips about places of interest and how to best get there – including pubs & co :-)

We enjoyed places like Stourhead, Longleat, Lacock, Avebury, Dyrham Park, Tyntesfield, the Lavender Farm and, of course, Bath and Bradford on Avon. Every time we discover new places to visit, there’s so much to see in the area, the Cottage is ideally situated.

But we also like spending some time at the Cottage, it’s so lovely, beautifully decorated (pictures do correspond to reality, you won’t be disappointed), very comfortable, clean and quiet. Birds, squirrels and pheasants are your neighbours.

Last but not least: breakfast is delicious and large. There’s a menu to help you keep track of the possibilities: you can have from fresh fruit to full English breakfast, wonderfully cooked by Jackie. Yummy are also auntie Beryl’s home-made jams and marmalade!

All the guests we met were, like us, enthusiastic about the place and Jackie and Martin’s incomparable hospitality. We hope to be back soon!

To put it in a nutshell: this is the perfect place to stay!

Priory Cottage is everything a B&B should be : a characterful house, set in beautiful surroundings, tastefully decorated and very comfortably furnished. Breakfasts are exceptional. Even more importantly, Jackie and Martin are warm and generous-spirited hosts who make you feel instantly welcome. They are more than happy to share their wealth of local knowledge to ensure you make the most of your stay. N.B. Jackie's directions were far more reliable than our sat-nav!
Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the B&B, which has separate access to the rest of the house. Both bedrooms have lovely views of the garden and countryside, while the downstairs sitting room where Jackie welcomed us with tea, coffee and cake has an appealing collection of books and local information. Although there are no pubs/restaurants in the immediate vicinity, we enjoyed our evening walk to the pub in Freshford, as well as a trip into Bradford-on-Avon.
The City of Bath is easily accessible from the cottage. We chose to go by the local bus, which stops right outside the front door. This was an adventure in itself; as it winds its way through picturesque villages, you will marvel at the bus driver's skill! If preferred, you can travel by train or use the nearby Park and Ride.
All in all, a memorable stay. Highly recommended. Thanks Jackie and Martin

Everything about Priory Cottage was 'storybook' charm. Jackie, obviously a detail-conscious & delightful hostess, made sure no-stone-was-left-unturned! Pressed bed linens, homemade jams, AND trays of teas & sweets offered at just the right times, are just a few of her 'special touches'. The Cottage even sat in front of a picturesque meadow with a pheasant family strutting around for very quick pictures! At the end of a busy and tiring day (or more) touring and sightseeing, Priory Cottage offered an oasis of comfort and pampering. The room, the 'loo', and the sitting room, were all equipped with any amenity a weary traveler might need. A local pub (which served an amazing sea bass) was a lovely stroll to the village and provided a glimpse of the English countryside that shouldn't be missed! After being revitalized by a restful and quiet sleep, guests sit down to Jackie's breakfast, cooked to order and perfection. In all honesty, I can't think of anything that would have made our stay more enjoyable and convenient. Bus service to nearby Bath was even available just outside Priory Cottage's front gate! Any traveler, who chooses NOT to make Priory Cottage their destination, is being denied an incredible experience!
