One of 6 gites in grounds of old manor house. We were a group of 8 adults and 8 children with ages ranging from 22 months to mid 70s. We also rented Pegasus and Cassiopeia which proved ideal as they were in an L shape set apart from the other gites. Andromeda had ample room for 4 adults and 3 children.
It was clean and fairly well equipped. Some of the furnishings bordering on shabby but this wasn't a problem. We never got the oven to work so used the one in Pegasus. The dvd was difficult to work. Kitchen has mismatch of crockery, cutlery and glasses but, between the 3 gites we had sufficient.
The washing machines in the barn need updating and caused much laughter but 2 worked so proved adequate!
David and Cathy live in the Manor House and are friendly, always on hand to help and give advice which is a huge advantage. They are very relaxed and were happy for us to move garden furniture around so we could all eat together. The large garden in front of Pegasus easily accommodated us all and we made good use of the bbq.
All bedding included in the price and beds made up which is great after a long journey. This is not replaced during your stay but can easily be washed and dried in a day if needed.
Another barn houses the pool table, tennis table and selection of bikes which were put to good use.
Across the road is a huge plot of land with great swimming pool and splash pool and large sitting area with plenty of sun loungers.
There is a large grass area with badminton net, small football net, slide, swings, trampoline.
There are also rabbits, guinea pigs, chicken and geese. Feeding time was eagerly anticipated by the children.
David and Cathy organised a day water skiing on the river for anyone who wanted to participate.
We spent another day by the side of the Charente where it was possible to hire canoes.
La Rochelle is a must for a visit and take David's advice regarding parking at the municipal swimming pool.
One of the children celebrated a birthday and the nearby Fish restaurant was recommended which proved excellent for a large group and good, reasonable food as well.
The lack of wifi connection proved very frustrating. Another couple were trying to make connection regarding their business but gave up. This should not be advertised as available. If we had known before hand we could have made contingency plans.
Overall this is good value for money but needs to be remembered this is not luxury accommodation. However, this is reflected in the price. We checked many other self catering accommodation and, in many cases, it worked out double the price.
Location rural but local boulangerie within 5 minutes drive. Good supermarkets within 20 minutes drive.
Chateau nearby at Dampierre sur Boutonne worth a visit and good food from La Cabine in the car park.
Various local markets with great atmospheres.
Nearby village has weekly fêtes during the summer. The night we went there were some excellent dance groups, some of them of international renown.
So much to see in surrounding area. Good walking and cycling routes. Locals so friendly. We never got far without someone stopping us for a chat even though we could barely understand each other. Caused much hilarity!
