“In need of maintenance”
Reviewed 18 March 2014

Only a large room and a comfortable bed are the postive things to mention. This hotel ( 4 * !!!) need a lot of upgrading and maintenance: dirty furniture, burnt rug floor, mold around bathtub. Fortunately the room heating system works. Hotel lobby and dining room were not heated so keep your coat on for breakfast and lunch as temperature hovers around 14C. Staff are OK. As it is a frontier town, you might not find anything else.

Large empty hotel with impersonal service. Our rooms were huge - however very uncared for, badly in need of repair and felt grubby.. My son’s room had a dreadful odour - it took awhile however they moved him to another room. The handheld shower over badly chipped spa bath was a bit hard to control and everything in room got soaked. Breakfast was unappetising though amusing - with interestingly labelled food, pots of cold tea & coffee sitting on a hot? (cold) plate not switched on. I would look for a small family type hotel.

Dear our valued guest,
Muong Thanh Lang Son would like to send our sincere apologies for all the trouble which you had encountered during your stay in our hotel.
We appreciate your opinion about our room facilities. We took notice about all the inconvenience of the room and immediately take action to fix it.
By the way, we are also sorry for our breakfast. However, we still need your sympathy for our food label. Since Vietnam has many tradition foods and drinks with many strange names in ethnic group's language that even Vietnamese people can not understand all the meaning, it was very hard for us to translate it into English. That's the reanson why some of our staff deciced to translate it word by word. We will take your comment to heart and promise that we'll never let it happen one more time.
We’ll hopefully be served you again.
Best regards,

I just returned from a night in this hotel. While it certainly isn't a 4-star hotel (as Agoda reports) in my conventional definition of the star rating system, having had a chance to walk extensively around town, I'm convinced that it is the best place there. Furthermore, at $28 per night (that's rack rate), I'm in no position to complain.

When I showed up yesterday, I was greeted by every staff member I encountered, they gave me a nice corner room, and the front desk guy helped me craft a game plan for the evening.

The internet was blazing fast (compared to China, at least), I didn't experience any problems with the shower, the pool was good enough (though nothing like the pools at decent HK hotels), and the bed/bedding were first rate.

I agree with what some of the other posters said about the rooms showing their age, and breakfast lacking in pretty much every respect. Look, this isn't some $400 million Shangri-La property. Set your expectations a bit lower, and you'll be happy.

Cutting to the chase, having read that the massages there were a good value, I stopped by the spa before it closed last night. The lack of a printed menu put me off a bit at first because I figured they were pricing on case by case basis (not cool), but once I started talking to the manager about the prices (and did the currency conversions in my head), I was stunned by how cheap they were. Basically, for $9 you get a room with a very nice sauna and hot tub plus a "washing" and a 60 minute Thai massage. For an extra $5, you can get a 90 minute "VIP massage". I'm not really sure what that entails beyond the basic 60 minute service apart from "hot stones". Living in China, I get massages all the time, so when I say that this place was awesome, my words mean something. I would take them over a Banyan Tree any day.

- Incompetent staff. They throw around with your passbook on the desk and after 1 day the passbooks are still laying on the desk without any copy has been taken or more action. Quite unsafe
- Aircondition does not work in the room. Asking for staff to look after the problem. Coming back at the night and the temperature in the room was +31deg. Have to change to another room in the middel of the night
- Provide borken furniture in the room. Is it a 4 stars hotel?
- My children will use the pool by the have been told the pool was closed this day. When I came down to the reception for this problem, suddently the pool was not close any way
- OK pool
- The room was old and some of the funiture was broken

I would think Muong Thanh should not have the status of 4 stars hotel. The hotel it self can rated as 3 stars but the staff should be degraded to 1 star.

Room Tip: stay away from this hotel

We have to sadly experience a couple of hotels before arriving here. The hotels in Lang Son are not the greatest and hardly any cater towards the ammenities most western guests would want.

Muong Thanh however was a very welcome reflief for us. Yes the rooms are tired and could do with updating, they certainly need to improve more on cleanliness but it is still leagues above the rest. For a start it have a good size pool with a dragon waterfall kind of feature. It isn't heated but it didn't stop us or the many number of locals who also use the pool.

The breakfast at the hotel is ok, nothing special however the hotel meals on room service are a lot better and would recommend them.

The reception does have Wi-Fi access which was a nice touch. We have a room of the higher floors so did not have any problems sleeping.

The hotel does have a Spa/Massage which I did use and I must say they are very good and the rates are quite cheap, there did not seem to be a shortage of takers.

Room Tip: The roads in Vietnam can be noisy at all times of the day with horns going constantly, it may be wor...

We stayed at this hotel on our way between Ban Gioc Waterfall and Ha Long Bay. It was not exactly the world's most beautiful room, the walls were a bit mouldy, but otherwise the place looked clean and the breakfast buffet was huge, although the selection of dishes has not been particularly adapted to western taste. Considering that Lang Son is not a very touristy town you will probably only need to stay here one night and for one night this hotel will definitely do the job.

I know it is the best hotel at the local. Donot want to compare other 4* in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city. The hotel is big, clean and at good location, but the room is small. The swimming pool, the water is too cold to swim. The toilet and the bathroom is too small that when you have a bath, everything inside get wet. The funiture is fine and beautiful. The restaurants serve very delicious local dishes, that is greatest at this hotel.
