“Classic Norfolk Pub”
Reviewed 18 May 2013

The Pelican staff know how to look after a pint of beer. All the ales (and lager - they have Peroni on draft) taste great as the lines are kept scrupulously clean. If you like a decent pint and some nice honest, well cooked, food then make a visit to this nice little pub. It is an unpretentious and hard-working country pub with a large garden and classic pub ambience. With a massive Inglenook fireplace and free wifi you could be all set for a session on the laptop or smartphone as well if you are a roadwarrior passing by.

Had Saturday lunch with 3 friends. All our meals very good (maybe a little more meringue and a little less cream in the rhubarb mess?) but service not quite up to scratch for in such a good restaurant. And we realised after meal that there was a fixed price menu - we had not been offered this and felt 2 of us at least could have saved a little on our meal. And the restaurant was chilly. Having said that we all agreed we would recommend and would like to return.

We visited for lunch with friends and had four in our party.

Very pleasant surroundings and ambience and helpful and friendly staff.

Three of us had the fixed price lunch menu at £12 for two courses and at £15 for three courses. We had a choice from the three course menu of chorizo salad ( soup was available) to start and lemon garlic chicken with cous cous and apple crumble. The chicken was succulent and well cooked and with a generous helping of cous cous. The starter and dessert were fine, though the Eton Mess was a little basic.

Our fourth member of the party chose fish and chips from the main menu. Unfortunately, the fish portion can only be described as meagre, which rather marred an otherwise very enjoyable lunch.

Though the weather was unsuitable for sitting outside, we noticed a very attractive and pleasant outside space for eating out on sunnier days.
However it was a good find overall and we shall return.

We would highly recommend the Pelican Inn restaurant in Tacolneston & will definitely be visiting again & again - what a find!! We have just had another excellent meal at this lovely pub with family, this is now the 3rd time we have eaten here in the evening since discovering this absolute gem just a short while ago & every time has been fantastic!! We are gradually taking more family & friends & everyone has been equally as impressed!! The welcome is always so incredibly warm, which has made us feel immediately at home & at ease. From the outside we just couldn't appreciate how lovely this pub truly is - the pub area feels cosy & traditional with an open fireplace & the restaurant area is another pleasant surprise bright & tastefully decorated, with a lovely atmosphere & a very comfortable feel. There are old tools, brass & copper pots & other items of interest hanging on the walls to add more talking points. There is a superb menu & specials board offering a great variety of choice, the service throughout has been brilliant & the quality of the food & wine has been consistently excellent!! Having been to many restaurants & pubs in Norfolk we are so pleased we have discovered this lovely pub!!

We often go to the Pelican for a drink (i like their own Pelican ale) and have eaten here a couple of times too. We really enjoy coming here as there is always a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. They have an open log fire which has been a fantastic asset over this long winter, and makes the pub feel nice and cosy.

You can eat in either the bar area or main restaurant, both are nice environments and both times we've eaten here the food has been very good. It is somewhere to spend the whole evening, as all food is cooked fresh, so don't expect it to be a quick meal - but its worth the wait.

They also host beer and ale festivals in the summer and make use of the large garden. These are good events and an opportunity to try a few different local ales.

Would recommend with confidence, both for drinks and food.

We have eaten here a few times & each time we could not fault a single thing. Its in a quiet village, not far out of Norwich and has real rustic charm.

Our most recent visit was lunch on Bank Holiday Monday with our toddler, I was really impressed with the menu, having only visited in the evening we thought that maybe it would be the same choice. There was a 2/3 course meal offer as well as light bites, traditional pub food & hot sandwiches/baguettes. The staff were extremely friendly & helpful, especially as our daughter was rather hungry, they kindly fast tracked her sandwich which helped to make our afternoon more relaxing!

We both opted for the steak sandwich with mushrooms & onions. From past experience at other restaurants/pubs, the steak is usually thin & therefore well done, but when ordering I had asked for it to be on the medium side if possible. It was perfect and exactly what the doctor ordered, the steak was medium, the Dijon mayo & onions & mushrooms really worked well and the salad on the side was fresh & crisp. We decided to share a dessert of strawberry & rhubarb pannacotta which was absolutely divine - I usually don't make it to dessert as the starter & main course are so delicious i can't manage another thing so popping in at lunchtime was a good excuse.

I really can't fault The Pelican, its a beautiful pub with traditional features, a gorgeous open fire & fantastic service from people who really care. They have thought about the little things to make going out, especially with children in tow, a lot more relaxing. I even noticed spare nappies & wipes in the baby changing area in case of an emergency - lovely touches.

We will certainly be visiting again and are really pleased that they are now open for lunches (more puddings for me!)

Thank you for taking the time to review us in so much depth, we as a business really do appreciate it.
Yes we have started opening lunch times Tuesday to Saturday with a new and exciting lunch menu ;offering bar snacks, bar classics, hot sandwiches and our fixed price menu.

Bank holiday Monday was an exceptionally busy day for us, what with a full lunch service and the EDP visiting us due to featuring in this Fridays 'PUB OF THE WEEK', I still had to make time to have a cuddle with your gorgeous little girl. so adorable! thank you once again!
we really do hope to see you again soon with emergency toddler food at the ready!

Welcoming log fire. Friendly waitresses. Good sized portions, not too much, not too little, Sunday lamb roast. Mint jelly seemed homemade and very sweet. Attractive surroundings - old tools on walls and boxing gloves. Brioche bread pudding scrumptious. Recommended.
