“Perfect start to our holiday in Ireland with the grandchildren”

Seven of us traveled together (two grandparents, mom and dad, and three children -- ages 12, 11, and 9). Gentian Cottage was our first stop after arriving in Shannon. I booked the Gentian Cottage, just outside Doolin, as I wanted the family to experience the warmth and ruggedness of the west coast of Clare. We spent five nights in the Gentian Cottage and it was the perfect set up for us. With two bedrooms upstairs (each with their own bathroom), and another bedroom on the main level, there was plenty of room for all of us. It is very handy when traveling with children to have the capacity to cook and prepare meals, as well as have access to a washer and dryer. The open kitchen and large sitting room with turf fireplace was our social hub for meals, planning our next activity, or relaxing and reading a book. We had incredible weather, so we were able to enjoy the view across the farmland to the Clare coastline and sea on most days.

The owner, Ann, who lives just down the road, was available for any inquiries -- even bringing a bigger pot up to us so my husband could make a chicken stew. Knowing we were arriving after a long flight from the States, she'd provided us with some of the food basics -- milk, tea, Irish brown bread, jam, eggs, etc. I felt like I'd just arrived at my own family's home.

We found the property to be in good shape and clean -- with all the modern conveniences of home available to us -- coffee maker, dishwasher, etc. It did take us a day to sort out the timer which regulated the heating of the water -- something foreign to most American's traveling outside the States. Use of a timer to time when the hot water is available is very common in most Irish households, and Gentian Cottage is no exception. As the saying goes, when in Ireland, do as the Irish do -- and we did, and we had a great time -- and plenty of hot water!

Beds: comfy (we had the room on the main level -- very comfortable bed, with just the right amount of blankets for a warm, cozy sleep. No back ache in the morning. )

Location: you do need a car. The village of Doolin or town of Lisdoonvarna is just a short drive.

Things to do: While staying at the Gentian Cottage we visited the Cliffs of Moher, a drive to Lahinch town/beach, day trip to Inisheer (one of the Aran island -- a rough and tumble ride on the ferry from Doolin), a private guided-walking tour of The Burren, pub dinner and traditional music in Doolin @ McGann's, and an evening of traditional music at The Roadside Tavern in Lisdoonvarna. Ann also provided us with access to Ballinalacken castle -- which the grandchildren loved exploring.

I hope I have the opportunity to stay in Gentian Cottage again. But if I don't, I will continue to recommend it as comfy and central place to stay for exploring the west coast of Clare.

“A MAGICAL PLACE”

We recently spent time at the Gentian Cottage and it was the highlight of our Irish adventure! It is such a serene setting: the ocean views, the livestock, the open spaces and a very welcoming home. The Cottage is modern, warm, welcoming and very well appointed. The owner (Ann) was very accommodating and even gave us a private tour of the very impressive castle on their property! That was very special indeed (Thanks Ann!). The setting and communities surrounding the Gentian Cottage were a very welcome change from the bustle of Dublin. We highly recommend this inviting home for a west Ireland adventure !

“Breathtaking setting, wonderful Irish welcome and magnificent house!”

Coming from quite a large (Dublin) family we recently had some close relations over from Melbourne. At one stage there were 4 houses consisting of 38 family members who rented in and around Doolin. Well those that didn't stay at Genitan Cottage were certainly 40 shades of green with envy when they decended on the Cottage one fine summers evening for a bit of ceol agus craic thanks to the musicians...and drinkers amongst us!

Ann, who could not have been more pleasant to deal with from the start of the booking and was more than welcoming upon arrival. The house is fantastic offering spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean (a joy for surfers amongst us) Aran Islands, Galway Bay and the Burren. The house even has a castle on its grounds! With 3 massive double bedrooms, a huge open planned lounge and kitchen a welcoming open fire with as much natural peat turf as we could burn, and magnificent sunroom & gardens the house could not be done justice by pictures! I would have no hesitation reccomending this house to any group thinking of visiting this magical part of West Clare.

Thanks again for everything Ann, see you again soon!

“Ocean one direction and castle the other!”
Reviewed 27 July 2012 for a stay in July 2012

My friends and I enjoyed every minute in Gentian Cottage and the area surrounding Doolin. The cottage was spacious and perfect for the three of us, but would have comfortably accommodated 8 with its big bedrooms, lots of bathrooms and ample living space. We didn't cook much, but only because we spent all of our time out exploring. Everything was there to eat every meal in. I don't recommend that though because then you would miss the great food and live music at the Doolin pubs. Ann was absolutely wonderful, especially when she took time out of her day to let us climb around in her family's castle! It was a fantastic experience!

“Christmas holidays in Doolin”
Reviewed 9 January 2012 for a stay in December 2011

My husband and I just returned from a three week, multi city trip to London and Ireland to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, Christmas and New Year's. We spend a week at Gentian Cottage (12/21-27/2011) in Doolin and had a wonderful time. Our two adult children (ages 20 and 23) joined us in Doolin. We renewed our wedding vows on the Cliffs of Moher, dined and celebrated in the town's pubs, made a home cooked meal on Christmas (herbed leg of lamb, poached salmon with capers, rocket salad and potatoes au gratin). The cottage has a wonderful fire place and the owners set up a Christmas tree and decorated the place in advance of our arrival. We had a truly wonderful experience in Doolin and loved the cottage. The owners, Ann and Colin O'Callighan, were absolutely terrific. We hope to visit Doolin again someday and stay at this wonderful cottage.

“Absolutely fabulous home and hosts”

We were in Doolin with family (three couples) and were very comfortable at the Gentian Cottage. Ann was very gracious and hospitable and made sure we had everything we needed to be comfortable during our stay. The welcome basket of goodies was very much appreciated and allowed us to get acclimated before we had to do any grocery shopping.

The rural setting was a wonderful place for us to begin our visit to Ireland and my only regret was we didn't have longer to explore all there is to do in the region. The location is great for any exploration of that region of Ireland, from Galway to Shannon and all areas between.

The house was fabulous, with three bedrooms (all very comfortable), each with it's own bathroom, a washer and dryer, sunroom, and an open kitchen, dining, living room that made it easy to gather and visit during breakfast and in the evening. The kitchen was well appointed and had everything we needed for the meals we cooked at home.

I would highly recommend Gentian Cottage to anyone looking for a peaceful, comfortable, country home with hosts that pay attention to every little detail to ensure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable.
