“Quaint hostel in the middle of it”
Reviewed 17 August 2013

Aille River hostel is small and clean and very friendly. There aren't too many places to eat and hang out, so finding dinner eating space can be a bit of a challenge.
Bed was nice, room had faint smell of livestock so we aired it out with the Window. The window opened to the ceiling so don't keep it open when you leave the room. Passing rain showers are frequent and will soak your stuff! The Hostel requires a 24 hour confirmation and are rather pesky about it, too.

Otherwise, the place is rather perfect for staying overnight. See if you can outlast the tour buses at OConnors or McGann's, McDermott's pubs, it'll be worth it! Oconnors is to the right as you head to the main road, and the two others are to the left. Even Fitzpatrick's right at the main intersection has music.
BTW, for a good lunch, go to McDermott's. Great food especially the Guinness Beef Pie. Avoid OConnors which is overrun with recurring tour buses all day.

Despite the small rooms, we had a super time in this hostel. Pete, the manager, was amazing. Super friendly & helpful; even managing to find time to play some music when he had a spare minute. BEAUTIFULLY set on the river bank. We ate all our meals outside on the picnic benches beside the waters edge :) On Pete's advice, in the evening, we went to a nearby pub good for traditional music (McGanns). So peaceful; so friendly. Nice, good sized kitchen. Free wifi. Free laundry facilities :D ~Actually, I'd love to go straight back there now! ;o) Also, tent-campers welcome in the field out the back :)

For a small fee you are allowed to pitch your tent behind the hostel, and use all of the hostel facilities. Pete was very helpful in giving recommendations for the area and for wild camping in other parts of Ireland. Because of him we ended up at another great place for a fantastic weekend outdoors. Thanks!

We were looking for somewhere to tent in Doolin and couldn't pass by this idyllic looking building by the river. For a very reasonable price we had full use of the hostel's facilities and a quiet and safe place to put our tent. Our host was beyond helpful and full of knowledge about the area. The rooms (which we had a look at) looked excellent. Highly recommended place to stay in Doolin.

Nice, clean and quiet (we stayed there mid-week, so this may explain it). It has an idyllic setting and is in close proximity to restaurants, pubs, and the tourist information center where you can book for your tours to the Aran Islands, Cliffs of Moher etc.

We stayed in one of the private ensuite rooms and windows opened out onto the river, so you were constantly treated to the sound. One bed was a double and one a single, and the stairs to climb to the room were very steep, so mind your step!

Overall, for a hostel it was certainly better than most and it afforded us some privacy (if you are so inclined and do not want to share rooms with anybody else, then this is an option).

This hostel is in a picturesque building by a river. From the outside it looks like it should be in a fairytale. Inside, its clean and well maintained. Great staff, atmosphere, and location. The only negative I can think of is the shower. It has the heater and water pressure booster device just prior to the showerhead. This causes the temperature and lowish water pressure to fluctuate. These type of showers are very common in old buildings throughout Ireland. It works, but isn't ideal. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone in the area. Great value.

I chose this hostel out of several in the area because of its location by the river. However, I enjoyed it because of the welcome provided by the owner (at least I assume she was the owner) and the good advice she gave me about a great little walk along towards Doolin Point on the road past the hostel. I also liked the cosy communal areas and the free internet access in a cubby-hole under the stairs. I coughed up for a room to myself and enjoyed the double bed as opposed to a bunk bed.
