It was my first time staying in a hostel and I don't think we could have picked better one. It was an absolute postcard picture to look at beside the river. The rooms were lovely and clean. We had a downstairs dormroom with 4 bunks in it, and it was full on both nights. I would have liked more hooks or a shelf of some sort to hang my stuff in the downstairs bathroom but that is just nit picking really, there was a great atmosphere in the hostel itself and the owner was there at the time we were and really understands the quirkyness of a pet briquette..... The hostel itself was quiet with comfortable beds, and Doolin is a lovely quaint little place. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone and I hope to come back again at some stage, we might even bring Brick!

We didn't stay in the hostel but in our camper van out the back, obviously with the consent of the owner Robert.... and for little more than the price of a pint, who very kindly agreed to accommodate us when we arrived late and desperate last Friday evening!

Although we didn't avail of the hostel facilities itself and therefore can't comment on the rooms etc. however, from the public areas we did venture into, we observed it to be a really nice place. It is very tastefully decorated and it's location by the river is most appealing.
Robert is a charming host, and from witnessing his interaction with his clients appears to be an excellent ambassador for Irish hospitality and I feel secure in the knowledge that our tourist industry is in very safe hands!

Don't miss out on reading a very funny letter from a past guest which Robert has framed on the wall near reception, it's really excellent!!

Thank you Robert for your help in assisting with our exit!!

By the way I also highly recommend the mussels in the hotel across the road, they were just fab, in fact
the best.I've eaten...EVER!

This is a cute and cozy little hostel, the staff was very nice and helpful as were all the guests staying there. This was my first stay in a hostel so I didn't know what to expect. My only complaints would be the bathrooms; no towels were provided and the showers are timed you only get about three minutes of water at a time so you have to keep pushing the button. Also, there was a mouse in our room but otherwise great place to stay for a cheap price.

Hello Anna
Thank you for taking the time to write a review about The Aille River Hostel.
As a hostel we dont supply towels (most Hostelers will have there own)
but for those who wish to have one we supply towels for a very modest fee to cover laundry
costs.
It is with some suprise to me that you say there was a mouse in your room and I find this very dificult to believe (especially in summer time) as we keep a very clean hygenic Hostel and at no time in the past 20 years or so have we had a similar comment or indeed have I ever seen one myself on the premesis and if this was the case it would have been wise to tell a member of staff
at that time and indeed no sighting of a mouse has been reported since your visit with us so I am more that satisfied that your comments on this are misguided,
I am very glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Hostel and I do hope that you will visit with us
again some time in the future.

Yours sincerely
Robert

Traveling as a couple we had pretty high expectations for the aille river hostel after reading some good reviews and taking in some great pictures of the place. We weren't disappointed at all. The building itself is quite beautiful, a converted farmhouse alongside a bubbling stream. The staff were all very helpful and the whole experience was excellent value for money. Doolin is quite a sleepy town and I can imagine it isn't for everyone. But if you enjoy a bit of beautiful scenery, a good pub and some time to yourself this is an excellent place to do it. Only slight downside was the laundry situation. There was only a single machine that the staff used most of the day and in the wet weather there was some competition to use it. Overall a great experience.

Aille River hostel is small and clean and very friendly. There aren't too many places to eat and hang out, so finding dinner eating space can be a bit of a challenge.
Bed was nice, room had faint smell of livestock so we aired it out with the Window. The window opened to the ceiling so don't keep it open when you leave the room. Passing rain showers are frequent and will soak your stuff! The Hostel requires a 24 hour confirmation and are rather pesky about it, too.

Otherwise, the place is rather perfect for staying overnight. See if you can outlast the tour buses at OConnors or McGann's, McDermott's pubs, it'll be worth it! Oconnors is to the right as you head to the main road, and the two others are to the left. Even Fitzpatrick's right at the main intersection has music.
BTW, for a good lunch, go to McDermott's. Great food especially the Guinness Beef Pie. Avoid OConnors which is overrun with recurring tour buses all day.

Despite the small rooms, we had a super time in this hostel. Pete, the manager, was amazing. Super friendly & helpful; even managing to find time to play some music when he had a spare minute. BEAUTIFULLY set on the river bank. We ate all our meals outside on the picnic benches beside the waters edge :) On Pete's advice, in the evening, we went to a nearby pub good for traditional music (McGanns). So peaceful; so friendly. Nice, good sized kitchen. Free wifi. Free laundry facilities :D ~Actually, I'd love to go straight back there now! ;o) Also, tent-campers welcome in the field out the back :)

For a small fee you are allowed to pitch your tent behind the hostel, and use all of the hostel facilities. Pete was very helpful in giving recommendations for the area and for wild camping in other parts of Ireland. Because of him we ended up at another great place for a fantastic weekend outdoors. Thanks!
