Being in the same industry ourselves, well travelled and know first hand some well known chefs and hoteliers, we can honestly say that our stay here was THE most disappointing of places we have experienced,
Having read some of the other reviews we experienced a lot of these ourselves - from makeshift reception staff ignoring us/dismissing our customer concerns/requests etc. etc
Our room was above the front door so there was continual noise from people waiting for cars chatting away below oblivious that we were attempting to sleep with no polite/awareness given by the staff to enable the other guests to understand there are guests above them in bedrooms and smoking below which wafted up into our rooms as the windows did not shut with huge gaps between the sashes which had had some wedges of bits of cardboard in in an attempt to fill the gaps - they didn't. We ended up putting our towels there which still did not help the drafts/smells/talking. The room and bathroom had cobwebs, filthy floors, carpets and chairs with no attempts, it appears, to deep clean the rooms occasionally to refresh them for future guests. Turndown consisted of the cushions on the bed being piled up in one corner on the dirty floor
Before dinner the bar was so dark we could not read the menus and when we asked for the lights to be at least turned up so we and the other four guests that were struggling to read the menus too, could at least order knowing what we had a choice from, the waiter merely laughed and said "its a problem isn't it" before he walked away with no solution to the problem. At breakfast the next day one of our eggs was not cooked, the bacon was so hard you could build a wall with it, the toast was cold.. the waiter apologised and said that there would be no charge for the breakfast, when we told him that it was already paid for he said "oh that's rough then". Our experience in the spa was sadly not a good one either being barely spoken to before or after our treatments
Our experience sadly was not a good one all round, even though we really wanted it to be.Gidleigh Park is by far the better option even without having a Spa

I arranged a special family celebration for my wife's 60th birthday at Stapleford Park. Four couples spent the Saturday night there and eight other members of the family joined us the next day for Sunday lunch.

The hotel and its grounds are fabulous - it's just like staying at an Agatha Christie stately home house party. The building is incredible, if a little intimidating, but our rooms were very good. We had the Wedgwood Room - a lovely four-poster bedded room decorated in Wedgwood style, complete with portrait of Josiah. Each room is individually designed, and though they may not all be to everyone's taste (Campion Bell is particularly quirky!) they do have character - you can always go to a Holiday Inn if you want corporate bland.

The service was excellent. Gabriel, who was assigned to look after our group for the whole of the stay, couldn't have been more accommodating. Some reviews point out that there are issues with service, but apart from one rather lengthy wait for a coffee order we found everything to be very good.

The outstanding feature of Stapleford, though, is its food. The meal we had on Saturday night and the Sunday lunch were fabulous - every single course chosen was excellent. We used the Billiard Room for our Sunday lunch - a gorgeous room for private dining which seats 16.

In summary, if you want to organise a special event, go to Stapleford.

Every thing looked lovely, all the staff VERY helpful....
BUT our room had cobwebs, a bad water stain on the wall near one of the windows and in between the bath and the fitting - a large gap, where you could see the bareness of the wall behind. Just a little disappointed.
Food Great, service excellent.... Room poor. SORRY

Room Tip: don't have room lake view - needs attention.

Enjoyed a night away at this hotel - the grounds, hotel and rooms were all gorgeous. The attention to detail was brilliant as was the service received. We had a meal in the restaurant which was lovely - a perfect night away.

What can I say!? We took my husbands’ Nana and Cousin to Stapleford Park for "something special" over Easter and it did not disappoint!

The staff were attentive, the building is so impressive (if not a little daunting!) the gardens are beautiful and the afternoon tea was out of this world!

We arrived a little too early for the afternoon tea so we had a wander around the gardens, played chess and croquet on the lawn and sat in the sun for a while.
The afternoon tea was great - fresh and yummy, which lots and lots of cakes!

The only thing to mention is that we sat on a long sofa in the window, with another group on the long sofa opposite us - they were quite loud so we found ourselves talking louder to be heard over them, which could have been awkward as the whole room was quite quiet! Next time I will ask to be sat on a table or a more private sofa!

Great place for couples and families - can't wait to go back!

Beautiful place, afternoon tea was lovely but three of us were sat on a long sofa which made it difficult to talk to each other side by side. We also had a couple opposite us in close proximity who could easily hear everything we were saying which made it extremely awkward. Would have been much nicer to sit round a table facing each other. I would go back but would ask to be sat opposite each other.
