We stayed here and it was lovely. The family are very welcoming and will help you with anything, nothing is too much trouble. We had a smallroom which was built on the side of the garage, it was fine, clean and comfortable. The free breakfast was great, mainly toast, bread, fruit and cake but it was enough. You have to catch the local bus to the beach or into George town but they run often and are good. Right up the road is the hawkers centre which has plenty including plenty for veggies, I dont eat alot of meat and I was fine. The beer is more expensive than the food but thats Malaysia in general. The food is cheap and cooked to perfection, I think my meal averaged less than a quid.

Room tip: We stayed in the room outside with an en suite shower room, it was clean and comfortable.

We went to penang for Xmas holidays and stayed in Baan Talay Homestay. The place is nice having 3 chalets, Clean and comfortable but the bathroom is small, difficult to bath. Also the walls are paper thin you can hear what people are talking in nearby chalet.

Overall the place is very nice, close to beach, quiet, staff is good, breakfast is okay (not much variety) and value of money.

Room tip: This place is located near beach but this is not the main beach, then main beach where water sports are conducted is around 10KM from here. Also is around 200m from the main road so if you don't have own vehicle then need to walk a bit.

This is to thank Nark and Saracha once again for arranging our (family of four) recent trip to Penang ....everything went very well....and we enjoyed ourselves...We stayed at an apartment Nark had so kindly arranged for us. As always it was very clean, comfortable and in a superb location...not too far from george town, many restaurants nearby and in a safe and quiet place. The apartment had all basic necessities, including a small gas stove, fridge aircon etc, 3 bedrooms, TV & internet.
This is the second time in the last 2 years we have stayed with Baan talay and thank Nark and saracha and wish them all the very best!
We are definately coming back!

The owner is very friendly. Very strategic place. Simple neccesities such as waste paper basket should be provided in the room in order to avoid litter and I suggest that they install water house inside the loo. But overall is good enough

We booked 2 nights at Baan Talay in March to see how we liked Penang and immediately fell for the place and ended up staying 12 nights until our leaving date came around. While we were there we chatted to the owner and his wife and they told us they were travelling for a few weeks at the end of March until about 2nd week in May and that other people were looking after the business for them during that time. Around our 2nd or 3rd day KD, the owner excitedly told us that he'd just had a booking for 1st April for 35 students - so I'm pretty sure this is the one the other reviewer mentioned. It really was a genuine booking made well in advance, even if the caretaker managers mixed it up further down the line - which I'm sure the owner would be upset had happened.
Because we booked this through Hostelbookers, I put our review on there and didn't add it to Tripadvisor, but this week I looked it up because I heard from another traveller we met there that one of the caretaker managers had left after several overbookings and misunderstandings, I was shocked to see the current reviews here, as lets face it we are all checking along the way.
So: to sum up. We had an excellent stay at Baan Talay. It is the longest we have stayed put in the 5 months we have been travelling, and truth be told if we didn't have transport back to KL for a specific date we'd have no doubt stayed even longer. The welcome was exceptional, the owners and staff are friendly, polite and curteous. The breakfast is plentiful, tasty and available until 11am - with complimentary tea and coffeeavailable 24 hours. It is an excellent place to meet up with other travellers of all ages and right on a bus route from Georgetown to the beaches. It has a secluded beach across the road and around 30 stalls at the Chinese Food Court on the corner of the street. There is also a 4 foot monitor lizard living in the storm drain a couple of houses down for those with an interest in such things. One of the evenings every guest and the two owners went out for a drink (there were 13 of us in total with ages ranging for early 20s to early 60s).
I feel sure that once the owners return (mid May 2011) everything will quickly get back on track and you will enjoy a great stay too.
