A monastery definitely worth a visit. The location is close to pretty much every hotel in Tsaghkadzor. Great architecture and beautiful surroundings ....

“worth visiting!”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

This medieval monastery was once an educational centre and a gather place of Armenia Royalty and their honourable guests. The cupola of the largest church has undergone an intensive reconstruction thus returning the manastic complex its majestic look of the past...

“A Monastery filled with Royal History!”
Reviewed 20 January 2013

Loved all the chapels and the feeling of rich history in this religious masterpiece. It is the perfect place to get married, renew wedding vows, and for christenings. With so many great venues for celebrations nearby it's a no brainer.
I only wish that the town would clear the snow from the streets better.

“What Religious Tourism Ought to Look Like in Armenia”
Reviewed 6 December 2011

Let me say from the outset that I did not find anything historically or architecturally outstanding about Kecharis monastery in Taghkadzor (which is why this is not a 5-star review). That said, everything else about Kecharis is excellent. The buildings & grounds are in immaculate condition, largely because of a generous donation from Europe in the late '90s. In fact, as for condition and decoration, Kecharis could be among the top sites in the country, maybe at the very top. Additionally, the well-kept grounds and buildings are enhanced with very good visitor support (gift stand & restrooms) and VERY present and available staff, including priests/monks.

The churches are also very well appointed (cost apparently being no problem). The altars are beautiful and the churches have many highlights of icons, paintings, and paintings throughout.

Granted, to some extent the churches are probably also quite western in decor, certainly more than most other Armenian churches, but the decor does not seem to me (although an outsider & foreigner) to detract from the Orthodox glory of the buildings.

It is worth saying that Tsaghkadzor is this way overall: very accommodating and very visitor/tourist friendly. Granted, money has flowed into this winter resort and Soviet jewel, but to me and my wife, Tsaghkadzor and Kecharis were a glittering promise of what tourism could look like in Armenia!
