“Honeymoon in Belize”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

After deciding on the activities we wanted to do while in Belize, I did a few internet searches for places to stay. We decided we wanted to be more central and closer to the water than in the southwest area of Belize. The Black Orchid Resort come up several times. Most of the reviews were positive so we booked our trip with them. (As an FYI- for American's that are used to Hilton or Ritz-type resorts, I do not believe there will be many to find in Belize. The resorts there are much smaller, quieter & in more remote locations.)
We booked the Honeymoon package with an additional day (email them if you want to extend the dates as you can't do it online with this package.) This was a great package; it included: airport pick-up & drop-off, a river view room, all-inclusive meals, a champagne river tour, a romantic, private dinner set up on the dock, 2 spa treatments, and a full day tour. The resort is pretty, quiet & peaceful. It really brings you back to nature. We really enjoyed the food & selection, the romantic dinner was so nicely done other guests requested it as well. The staff were all very friendly & nice. If you get a massage, ask them to book the Canadian (don't know his name), my husband was he was amazing. A few employees really went above & beyond to help us or get things planned. Although, there are a few that aren't as efficient (still helpful & nice though). Booking tours in advance is probably the best bet. We planned a few ahead of time that worked out great, but the ones we didn't were a little harder to get set up while there. Everything worked out with all the activities we wanted to do, but it could have been a little more seem-less. However, the Resort really did a nice job setting up a place for us to stay on Ambergris Caye for a dive trip with transportation there & back for a very reasonable price. We really want to give much praise to Cesar. He is one of the tour guides for the Resort & he was the BEST. We met him for the boat tour & then he was our Cave tubing/ziplining guide. He is very personable, knowledgeable, and just an over-all good guy. We really enjoyed spending time with him so we requested him for another tour. He was able to move things around so that he would be our guide again. It's always nice to have a person with you to make you feel more comfortable when you are out of your own surroundings. We loved him!
There were a few small inconveniences; a small water issue in our building for a few hours, trying to get a few activities planned out, but with a little patience everything was fixed our scheduled to accommodate us. Overall, this was a great place to stay & I definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for a Riverview Room in building T. It's really nice & modern. The bathrooms are great a...

A really beautiful hotel in a stunning setting. The landscaping and grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the pool area very well kept. The location is has a real jungle feel and has an isolated feel but this is exactly what you come for. Stunning location on the river and the hotel has a range of kayaks to grab and explore the quiet river. Beautiful and full of wildlife. The hotel is also deceptively close to the major Mayan sites and Belize City and the hotel arranges transport and trips to all.
The hotel room itself was beautiful...amongst the best I've stayed in all over the world. Very large, 2 king size beds (very comfortable) with expensive linen, and generally very well appointed. A large balcony overlooking the pool & river was fantastic for reading and relaxing.
The staff were all very friendly and accommodating and worked hard to please.
If there was one tiny criticism (and it is tiny), the food isn't quite up to the standard of the rest of the hotel (i.e very high). It's a slightly muddled menu of mixed cuisines and the meat quality wasn't the best in a couple of the dishes we had. However, it's certainly not poor, and given it's the only place to eat in the area, it serves the purpose and is in a nice setting. And the breakfasts were very good!
Overall - can highly recommend. Perfect place to drop out of society for a few days and enjoy a jungle setting. The great staff, location, and quality of accommodation made it a fantastic break in a great hotel. Oh...and Belize generally is just awesome!!

Beautifully landscaped, the resort is on the river. The staff were very attentive and accommodating. We traveled with two kids (9&7). They loved the pool. We were made to feel at home. Will definitely stay there again when we come back to Belize.

Great place on the river, close to the airport. The grounds are landscaped with beautiful local flowers and orchids. The rooms are very clean and ours had a balconey overlooking the river. We took out the free canoes and kayaks and took a nice relaxing ride up the river. The restaurant was one of the best we encountered on our 2 week Belize trip. The staff is wonderful and the pool is great after a long day. There is also a wonderful complimentary breakfast in the palapa out by the river. I'm so glad we found this great hotel...it saves us having to stay in Belize City our last night.

Very clean and very friendly resort. We stayed in a giant one bedroom two bed room. The room had a lovely balcony overlooking the Belize river. The hotel has a great continental breakfast. Also, there are free boats you can take on the river during your stay.

The hotel is about 7 miles north of the city. So, be prepared to either take a taxi or rent a car. We rented a car from Crystal Car Rentals.

Room Tip: Get a room by the river. Get up early for the breakfast.

My wife and I have been traveling for many years. I have used Trip Advisor to research my travel plans but have never taken the time to write any reviews. Once we returned from our trip to Belize I deceided it was time for me to start helping others plan their vacations. The first part of our trip was absolutely incredible, best ever, (see my other review), then we stayed at The Black Orchid Resort. First I must say that the grounds are very well landscaped making for a really nice setting. Also the kitchen staff, waiters and bar tender were all very nice.

However, ten months in advance we booked a nearby river front house through the Black Orchid. Approximately two weeks before our travel we were notified that the house was unavailable. I was okay with that as I understand things happen. We were promised an upgraded room. The room we were given was magnificient. The next morning our entry door broke and my wife and I had to climb in and out of our window to access our room. The staff attempted unsuccesflly to fix the door.

Upon checking out, we were asked for our key. I reminded the young lady who my wife and I thought was the manager and the front desk man that we were the people climbing in and out of our window and the key was stuck in the door. They laughed, I didn' find any humor in the situation. During our stay the owner was on the grounds mingling with numerous guests. He never took the time to see how we were doing or ask if there was anything he could do to make up for the broken door.

I traveled in February of this year. Upon returning home I received an email from Black Orchid asking us to post a "positive" review on Trip Advisor. I immediately responded with my concerns to the management of Black Orchid and to this day have never recevied a reply. I believe two months is adequate time for the owner to contact us back. We didn't expect our stay to be comped but the owner didn't even show me the courteousy of a response.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get the room with the broken door.
