“Tired and in need of full re-vamp”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 September 2013

We stayed one night after a trip on the Gloucester and Warwick railway's 'Elegant Excursion' dining train, which was excellent.

Unfortunately the hotel took the gloss off our romantic weekend. Our room was a fairly revolting mustard/ gold colour with the paint marked and chipped. The bathroom was tolerable, but with exposed pipework and second-rate fittings.

Worst of all - and why we rate this 'poor' rather than 'average' - was the shower. When I used it on the evening of our arrival it was inconsistent, one moment the right temperature, then going excessively hot, followed by excessively cold, then back to the right temperature throughout my shower. The next morning when my husband went to use it, it went from the right temperature to scalding and stayed there, so he had to switch it off and rinse himself using the bath taps and a flannel!

Breakfast was adequate. His scrambled eggs were cold, but my eggs Benedict were acceptable and the toast was tasty. The orange juice was nothing special, nor was the coffee.

The service was very good all round, everyone polite and helpful. We mentioned the faulty shower as we checked out, and the receptionist noted it. So if you're in room 16 and the shower doesn't work - don't blame me!!

this hotel has for many years been one of the best of the Old English Hotels chain. The views are spectacular, the rooms extremely comfortable and well maintained and the bar and food very good. Dinners and breakfasts are served by friendly and efficient staff, even if we arrive an hour too early for breakfast as we did, not having listened when we were told the time for weekend breakfasts! All the staff were helpful in sorting out problems, beyond the normal call of duty, (our car had broken down) and we were delighted with everything about our stay here.

Superb views and fantastic walking over the hills at the back . No car required. Very helpful, polite and accommodating receptionist, bar and waiting staff. Food was ideal to suit a wide age range. Plenty of space to find quiet areas to chat. No background music which was great for a deaf father!

Fantastic view from room as hotel is high on the edge of the Cotswolds. Room was spacious but rather tired. Plenty of very hot water but shower rather difficult to control. Bed very comfortable. Excellent breakfast and friendly staff.

We visited The Rising Sun outside Cheltenham as a party of four adults and a toddler. The staff were helpful avid friendly but service was quite slow. The restaurant was quite child friendly with changing facilities and highchairs.

I felt the prices to be a little over the odds for what was fairly average pub grub (frozen chips etc). My mother had one of the daily specials and said it was very good, so maybe the trick is to stick to the specials menu!

The view however is spectacular.

A lovely old hotel on top of Cleeve Hill with views over the Cotswolds as far as the eye can see-(oh oh - is that smog getting in the way?). Rooms were huge but a bit warm (no air conditioning) and you could hold a party in the bathroom. The hotel is showing it's age with old carpet, wonky floors and tired paint. The upside is the warmth and charm of the hotel. We stayed during a very warm summer and the hotel was full on both nights with people in the restaurant, the bar, on the lawns etc. A wonderful atmosphere! The dinner in the restaurant was quite good and breakfast was excellent.

Stayed 4 - 6 May 2013. Had a great room with THE VIEW! Staff, food and hotel were great. The only problem was they got overwhelmed at times with the number of customers (it was a bank holiday), but we were in no hurry so could wait. Unfortunately some customers could not! The food was very well done and well above the standard of OEI. Look forward to our return.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a room with that view.
