This was just a one night stay which we had paid up front as we had a very early appointment in Cheltenham the following morning . We booked a superior 'room only' on line ( no breakfast ) after reading the website which boasted 'charm with the superb standards of modern comfort' . We were allocated room 21 at the end of the corridor. The room with 2 windows was spacious and overlooked the busy road at front and corner of the hotel...so there was constant traffic noise. The decor was 'shabby' and the furniture old fashioned. The dressing table was 'sticky' to the touch..... The drapes on the windows were drab and depressing and the carpet of the same colour dated and did nothing to stop the constant creaking of the floor beneath. The bed which was supposed to be a king size, was not and was a 4 poster with a mattress, which sagged in the middle. The frame over the bed moved, which was a bit disconcerting. There was only one bedside cabinet, as the other was used to prop up the tea/ coffee facilities on the other side if the room. The bathroom was very old fashioned, with a shower with curtain over the bath which did not drain fast enough so we were left stood in 2 feet of water ! The internet was slow and we gave up trying to use it. In the evening when we returned from dinner ( at another venue ) there was a dirty tray outside our room which was still there in the morning ! After an awful night's sleep in the uncomfortable bed we left feeling 'cheated' and very disappointed. The receptionist was nowhere to be seen, either in the evening or the following morning, or we may have voiced our displeasure at the time. I have now complained online, via the website, but to date, have not received even an acknowledgment..... Need I say more ?

A very pleasant, friendly hotel well situated for exploring the Cotswolds. The views over Tewkesbury to the Malvern Hills are stunning. The food is at the upper end of the gastro-pub bracket and the breakfast was superlative.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view facing the Malverns

I stay at this hotel very frequently and can highly recommend it. The rooms are comfortable, with good views in general, but the restaurant and bar are really excellent. Free wifi works well. Good selection of food and drinks at very good prices, and with various themed menus and specials there's no chance of getting bored with the standard menu. The whole things is presented superbly by the very friendly staff.

Stayed at the Rising Sun and was impressed by the charm, location and value of the hotel.
Hotel complex has a great view of the valley, easy access from the Cheltenham train station (all the cab drivers know where it is), and a very good restaurant / pub attached to the hotel. You cannot beat the price for the value.
Not right in town but perched on a hillside, it was too cold to go outside much, but did manage to hike up Cleve Hill which is literally right behind the hotel complex. If you get up early and the weather is clear, you get some fantastic sunrises on top of the hill.
Complex is old, but like I said has a comfortable and charming feel to the place. Did I mention the fish and chips, beer and deserts were all superb??
My wife and I will be staying there on vacation in 2014.

Room Tip: Single pane windows during cold weather can condense on the inside, but all rooms have that great vi...

This has become a bit of a yearly event thanks to tesco clubcard points! We still love it here. The staff are friendly and polite and the manager is always on hand with a friendly greeting. Rooms are fine, with amazing views towards Cheltenham and The Malvern Hills. Food is fine especially the 2 courses for £10 which a available from Monday to Friday. Potion sizes aren't much different from the main menu! We are always looked after in the special place.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the second floor with the views!

The Sunday roast lunch - just DON'T. Unless you want over-done bad quality meat with loads of carbs (yorkshire pud with turkey...?) and very basic badly-cooked veg. yuk yuk yuk. Yes -I made a bad choice but never again.

We popped in tonight for some food after taking the dog up on the hill. What started out as quite efficient turned into an absolute nightmare..

Firstly the menu sounded really appealing with such delights as crushed new potatoes with the salmon and 'chicken breast stuffed with goats cheese'... Which in reality was a chicken breast thrown in a bowl with a slice of cheese dumped on top and a terrible bit of bacon on top of that. The potatoes with my wife's meal weren't crushed. The 'green beans' well, if you class about 4 small cuts of about 2inch long as a side then well.. Enough said.

Then there was the dessert, the dishes were taken away as my wife was taking her last mouthful and then we sat for 20 minutes waiting for the dessert. I asked one of the bar staff whether she could check on my dessert to which i was told 'go and speak to xxx I've just come off my break'.. She then changed her mind and said 'I'll check.. ' but didn't bother getting back to me..

The final episode was the bill paying, I turned up to pay for the bill, gave my table number to get told theres no tab running on the table. I then said they have swiped my card and then had to wait whilst they ran around looking for the guy who served me, finally allowing me to pay, with no apology for the delay or inconvenience.. Not a good way to run a business.
