We stayed in the Casetta Verde - which is a self-contained apartment on 2 floors that sleeps 2 or 4 persons. The property is very secure located behind high walls and large steel gates, but there is plenty of space inside so it doesn’t feel enclosed. The owner, Giuseppe, is very gracious, helpful and accommodating. He speaks excellent English and is very knowledgeable about the locality - providing a series of very good recommendations for places to visit and eat. A bottle of wine, some olive oil, bread, jam, milk, pasta and passata were provided on arrival in the well-equipped kitchenette. Remember to take your cheque-book with you to pay the deposit though! A washing machine and dishwasher are also provided. Taurisano is a 5-minute drive up the road and has a variety of small supermarkets: DOC is the recommended one, but buy your fruit and veg from the small shop over the road as this is much better quality. The apartment was immaculately presented and cleaned twice in the week. The large swimming pool is a very welcome relief when returning back after a hard day on the beach in Leuca, or shopping in Gallipoli. Overall, an extremely comfortable and pleasant place to stay, and a very good base from which to explore this fascinating corner of Italy. The area is noticeably poorer than the rest of Italy: the roads and driving are both terrible and not for the faint-hearted – expect the locals to cut you up at every opportunity and to pull the most lunatic stunts – then you won’t be in the least bit surprised by their behaviour! Driving is however a must to get about with several good places to go within half an hour, and the city of Lecce only about an hour away - very beautiful and a definite ‘must see’.
