“Historic, beautiful house”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2013

We stayed here for one night. The house is beautiful & you can just feel the history in it. It was cool to stay in a place that has so much history attached to it. Our room was simple & clean, it was nice to have a private bathroom. If you want a quiet, no fuss, relaxing spot to stay this is it. Breakfast was continental.

This hotel is practically on top of Bras d'Or with beautiful views and sunsets. The MacNeil's are wonderful people who make you feel welcome and are happy to give advice on where to go. We fell asleep listening to the frogs both nights...would definitely go back.

I stayed at the Grand Narrows with my husband 2 summers ago. It was a fantastic place to take a break and have a nice hot shower (and real bed!) and breakfast after our fun busy camping trip on the Cabot trail! It was a beautiful building with a lovely host and a yummy breakfast! And soooo much history!

My husband and I spent two days at this historic property which is being carefully restored. The owners were more than happy to share their insights and stories regarding the building and how they came to own it. Elaine was proud to share two books that include accounts of the grand old hotel when she realized we were interested. We stayed in the rooms that Alexander Graham Bell frequented as his favorite. He is just one of many historical figures who stayed their. Terry and Elaine were gracious hosts; the rooms were well appointed, including the private bathroom. Breakfast was continental and voluminous including delicious oatcakes, cereals, yogurt, and other breads and fruit. We truly enjoyed the sunsets from the front porch with a glass of wine and a chat with Terry. The views from the Heritage center were spectacular, as well as those from the porch. Glad we stayed two nights!

Room Tip: Other than the Heritage center and the lake, there is little to do in the immediate area. North Sydn...

Beautiful hotel, awesome history, scenic location on the water with a gorgeous view of Bras d'Or Lake. It's not really close to any towns but we were able to have dinner at a new hotel close by that had just opened up which was great. The room was excellent, we stayed in the MacLennan room. It was clean, had its own temperature control (which we needed because it was freezing when we went!) and had a huge bathroom. The only thing that was disappointing was the breakfast. It was a mediocre continental breakfast, not much selection (we are not hard to please mind you!). Perhaps we just had bad luck seeing as other reviewers have really enjoyed it in the past.

Beautiful old restored hotel. Huge yard to run around. Right on the water. Alexander Graham Bell stayed here many times in the late 1800's. The room is very nice, the bathroom is huge and the breakfast was great!
There isn't much to do around this hotel so plan your day to either drive to Baddeck or Sydney, that's where the action is. If you just want to relax then just hang out at the hotel, the liquor store is a hop, skip and a jump.

My husband and I took a week to explore Cape Breton and chose this B&B for one of our stops because of its central location. The hotel is steeped in history -- we stayed in the Bell Suite where the likes of Alexander Graham Bell and Helen Keller had laid their heads in years gone by. US presidents and other dignitaries also stayed at this grand locale. We ate breakfast in the same dining room as King George VI (the one from the King's Speech)!!

The sunset over the Bras d'Or was beyond words and the walks along the quiet country road sublime.

Elaine and Terry are wonderful hosts.

I highly recommend this hidden gem. Only about 40 minutes from North Sidney.
