The Santoline is housed in a handsome 16th century stone farmhouse on a winding one lane road a mile from a typical old Ardeche village. There is a nice pool and a fine view over the surrounding fields and vineyards. The cuisine is first rate and has a slightly North African accent; the owner-chef and his wife spend long winter holidays in Morocco. There are only eight rooms. The atmosphere is distinctly French; during our stay all the guests were French speaking. This is not the place for anyone seeking excitement, although picturesque Medieval villages are within an easy drive and plenty of walking or hiking is available in the adjacent countryside. If you are looking for a quiet, restful and beautiful country setting this one is hard to beat. It’s remote, but worth the trip.
