Point Sands Holiday Park
Reviewed 9 October 2012

We have been visiting Point Sands for about 14 years, camping as a family, the appeal for us is that it is not a lively holiday park, there is no nightclub, there is no big furry mascot wandering around, there is no bingo, it was somewhere we can go a few times a year and our children got to ride their bikes safely, play on the beach, paddle and swim on a safe beach, have wonderful adventures in the woods, use their imagination, toast marshmallows at a campfire on the beach as a family watching the best sunsets we have seen, then watch the stars on a sky that look close enough to pluck out the sky.
We have seen seals, deer, herons, frogs and bats on site. We have always found the other Campers and static caravan owners to be friendly and there is very much a family atmosphere.
The toilets are dated, but are adequate, play park for kids and great food from the Cara Cafe, well stocked shop and very friendly staff and owners.
On site staff to make sure everything is as it should be and dogs on leads rule is adhered to and reinforced by staff.
Views from site are stunning, it is not a Holiday Park for those who need cabaret and on tap entertainment.
Looking forward to visiting this site for many more years.

Thank you for your very kind review. We are thrilled you have been enjoying Point Sands for so many years and hope that we continue to provide 'a little bit of Scottish Paradise' for you. As you quite rightly say, the toilet block was very old and tired and we are pleased to tell you that steps have now been taken to replace it. In the interim, this will be brand new luxury mobile units with self contained toilets and showers for both men & women whilst we design and plan a new more permanent building.
We look forward to welcoming your family back to Point Sands in 2013.

This is the 3rd year that our family has camped at the site and we are already booked on for next year. The coastline in this area is spectactular and the view from the campsite is amazing - a great way to be greeted in the morning when you unzip your tent!

There is a playground area for children, lovely quiet beach for walks and barbeques and a shop and cafe where there is always interesting local information to be gleaned from the owners and staff!

The toilet/shower buildings are admittedly "tired" but we have always found them to be clean and fully functioning and the showers always deliver constant hot water for 7.5 minutes! I know from the owners that they desperately want to replace these in the near future and are working to do so but we just have to bear with it a bit longer.

In the recent windy weather during August, some of our tent poles broke, and we were helped greatly by the owners/staff who had some spares that we used - where else could you get this service?

All in all a very down to earth welcoming site that just happens to be in beautiful location!

I can't help but disagree with the last review I'm afraid! Point Sands has a beautiful white sandy beach, which is ideal if you are into water sports yes! But it's shallow and safe and perfect for kids of all ages to swim, boogie board, fish with nets etc.

The beauty of this site is its unspoilt location, breathtaking natural beauty and fantastic relaxed laid back feel. The owners work hard to maintain this and that is its top selling point! It would be spoiled by slot machines, bars and inhouse entertainment. If that is what you are looking for then best stick to Haven or Parkdean resorts.

It encourages young and old to stop, take a breath and start using their imagination to make their own entertainment. Quality family time or romantic retreat, it's what you make it! You can feel the stress melt away as soon as you arrive.

Yes the facilities are not 5 star but in fairness the owners have openly admitted this and are already making arrangements to upgrade them. 20p for a good length of time in the shower is not breaking the bank either is it?

You can't beat a BBQ or a bonfire on the beach with a glass of wine while watching the sunset. Not many sites will allow this! Kids are safe and everyone looks out for everyone else. Ther is always a helping hand, especially in the tents and tourers area and I'm sure the statics are just as accommodating. That's why I go back and have done for 3 years now.

You can go and get involved in all sorts of amazing family events if that is what you like, but also your privacy is respected and it's ok if you don't! There was a family Olympics event this summer and all the kids and adults had a ball. Keep your eye on the website for updates. There is always something going on. But if you want to keep yourself to yourself that's ok too.

My point is, you have the freedom to choose what you want to make of your holiday. This is a spacious site with a lot going for it and much more to come I suspect!

We spent 3 nights camping. A lovely beach, fine for the kids and evening camp fires. The view to Gigha is fantastic. However, I doubt we'd be back any time soon because:

1. Unless you've brought your own boat or canoe, there's not that much to do locally (although our day trip cycling round Gigha was good).
2. The toilet block is of such poor condition and cleanliness (althought he manager did say this would be replaced sometime this year). Having to pay extra for a shower isn't good either.

Others will feel differently because the site has received great reviews elsewhere.

Thank you for visiting Point Sands, I am glad you enjoyed the beach and the campfires with stunning views. We do have a visitor centre within the shop which is well stocked with information for local places to visit and things to do. Boat/kayak hire is available on the neighbouring island of Gigha where the sheltered coastline makes it more suitable for watersports. As you mentioned we are aware that the facilities block is dated and we are working on a large project to invest heavily in new facilities in the future, obviously projects like this take time with planners and funding etc.
Re the showers - 20p for 7mins of hot showers is as cheap as we can get it, we have tried to make the showers free of charge but until we install new facilities this isn't possible, we would have been happy to explain this to you. Thank you for your review, all feedback is very welcome.
