“fawlty towers”
Reviewed 28 May 2013

Stayed here prior to flying to Egypt... We had booked late... but having arrived at 10pm it took them another hour to get our room ready. whilst we waited in the bar ( which was very expensive).. when we eventually got to our room we had been given a twin when we had asked for a double...back to reception until they found us another room. You can get wifi with a code which you had to pay for -- which |I find unusual nowadays .

The staff tried hard but it was all a little like fawlty towers .. Its a shame as we had stayed there before and it has gone down hill since then.

recently stayed at the copthorne before flying to djerba
very good value with 8 days parking for less than £75
good priced meal in the bar/lounge with very good service
courtesy coach service to the airport could be better if more frequent as they only run hourly but still a good service from 04.20 in the morning for early flights

Room Tip: ask for a room near to reception or it can be quite a walk from the far away rooms

We are so pleased you enjoyed your recent stay and thank you for your review. It is sometimes difficult to predict how many people will travel on the shuttle bus so we are only able to provide an hourly service. Our taxi company, Road Runners, are excellent and only charge £9.50 to and from the airport for anyone who wants the convenience of a taxi journey.
Hope you had a great time in Djerba, I have been there, the beaches are beautiful.
Best wishes

We stayed here for one night on the park and stay offer. We booked the mystery hotel deal so got a good price. Our room was obviously a renovated one and was quaint and spotless. The bathroom was immaculate. We got cabs to and from the airport which was ten mins maximum and cost 9.50 each way. I found the staff efficient and our car was fine. No problems whatsoever and would stay again next time we fly from Gatwick.

Stayed at the Copthorne on 9th April 2013 as part of Stay and Park package. When we returned from holiday my car had been damaged whilst in the hotels care but they refused to take any responsibility stating that the car was damaged when they went to move it. The duty manager reluctantly agreed to investigate the incident and I subsequently received a letter but it was very clear that there had been no investigation otherwise they would have been able to say when and how the damage was caused. Prior to leaving the car keys with them you are asked to complete a form which asks if there is any damage to the car but clearly this is a joke.
As for the hotel the sight of rotting doors on the conservatory restaurant is a sign of things to come. Our room was large and the bed comfortable and clean. However the décor was tired, as were the furnishings and whilst it may have been fashionable once you would not know when if you are under forty. Ditto the bathroom. The restaurants and bar are expensive and not very good. A taxi to the airport is only £1 more expensive than the shuttle bus which runs only every hour.
In summary if your looking to stay at a run down hotel which is overpriced and where they play dodgems with your car whilst your away this could be just the place for you.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

First time here.
Food at the fine dinning was very overpriced for the quality of food.
The ravioli were hard, dry and cold.
The saddle of lamb was a about 1/4 inch THIN & very fatty.
Dessert was ok.
I would not eat there again, way to pricy!
The rooms are very old and run down. We stayed in room 202,brick wall was fine, but everything else........

Thank you for your recent review following your stay with us. We are very sorry you did not enjoy your meal in the Lion D'Or restaurant. I hope you advised the chef, or restaurant manager that you were not happy, your meal should have been replaced. Please note we are currently refurbishing our rooms, all of which will be completed by the end of the year. I do hope you will consider returning.

We spent a night here in transit via Gatwick. The community bus actually drops you right in front of the hotel in about 28 minutes. Breakfast we decent and plentiful if not gourmet. They don't restock it often enough, but I think many have already mentioned that. Cheap enough to be good value but don't some expecting a real 4-star property which it's not.

I think most people stay here because they are using the airport. For the purposes of leaving your car here and getting to Gatwick you cannot fault the hotel. The bar is open very late for residents and the hotel room itself was good. Just a tip here. Do not under any circumstances use the hotel shuttle from Gatwick back to the hotel. Following a long flight we had to wait in the bitter cold for almost an hour. When the shuttle did come it took a whole hour to get back to the hotel calling at others first and winding its way round country lanes for a very long time. It was exhausting. This should be no more than a ten minute trip. So, my advice is to get a taxi it costs very little more than the shuttle bus. We mentioned this at the reception desk when we finally arrived at the hotel and the young man was less than symathetic.

Thank you for your review and your advice for other travellers. We are sorry your journey back to the hotel was so long. We are currently reviewing our shuttle bus service and timetable. There will be a new service in place from September which we believe will be much quicker and just serving our two hotels. We do hope you will consider returning to us in the future.
