“A Hidden Gem in Tuscany”
Reviewed 2 May 2017 for a stay in April 2017

What is not to love about a cozy home, outstanding hosts, a fresh breakfast, and beautiful scenery?!
You will get all of that, plus more at Il Rifugio. My family and I stayed here recently, for a little over a week, and we would all highly recommend this location to anyone looking for an absolutely stand out holiday!
First, lets talk location: nestled along the olive trees in the countryside, but conveniently located about 1 hour to Pisa, around 2 hours to Florence, 15 minutes to Lucca, and about 2 or so hours to Cinque Terre, this B&B presents the best for all interests! I mean come on, it doesn't get much better than that. This B&B is perfect for anyone looking to get away for a relaxing stay, but still has intentions to see the sights, then get away from the crowds at the end of the day.
Next, the atmosphere of the place: beautiful, comfortable, clean, and tastefully decorated. Flowers and plants spread throughout, as well as eclectic art and decor everywhere; just outstanding!
Lastly (although I could go on forever), the hosts Bill and John. They are now like family, I was actually sad to leave them. They were so insightful, attentive, and accommodating with everything and anything. Whether it was offering suggestions for day trips, providing light snacks to end the day, or just friendly conversation, they will steal your hearts.. I know they stole ours.
I cannot extend enough praise about our stay here, so I will end by saying that this b&b is a gem in Tuscany <3

A Few times times, in this business, you meet exceptional people....and these folks are at the top of the list. We greatly enjoyed their company.
It was a family reunion, with their son and daughter-in-law living in England, so the entire trip was devoted to talking, laughing, and catching up, for them. We are very happy we were a part of that wonderful 9 days. And hopefully they will come back to do it all over again!..

Myself, my spouse, and two very dear friends rented a car at the airport and took off to find this place. Wow! If you want to experience really living in a small Italian village with all the comforts of home -- this is it, the best of all worlds. The hosts are magnificent in every respect of the word--they will handle anything that comes up, they have seen to your every need before you even show up, they guide you in all the right directions. Their home is right in the heart of the quintessential town you have been longing for. A neighborhood restaurant (incredible food-few tourists), ancient church bells during the day, silence at night, wonderful walks, and visual feasts every which way your turn. Our two bedrooms and two baths were completely separate, private, and well-appointed with luxurious amenities. Again, do not miss this opportunity (and take your TomTom for invaluable driving help). Also ask about where to go for the best gelato in the universe (try the very dark chocolate with dates, and the cinnamon--both world class!) Ciao Bella!

We welcomed these folks, who had always wanted to visit this part of Italy.
It turned out to be a great experience for us all..they appreciated the
help we gave them in finding the hidden gems we've found here in Tuscany,
and we had a great time just visiting. We now have an even larger
extended family, and will see them back here very soon. They were a pleasure to meet, and be with.

“Wonderful break in idyllic surroundings”
Reviewed 1 September 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Lovely stay with my daughter at this holiday rental.

We had two rooms and a bathroom in our host's house, but with a quite separate staircase to our rooms, so it is very private. They were delightful, entertaining, good company, and excellent hosts. Their antique collection is to die for! We enjoyed our stay enormously and did a lot of travelling from this central location, to Florence, Barga, Vinci, Pisa, Cinque Terre, and Lucca to name but a few of the cities and towns we visited. Their fruit salad and toast for breakfast were second to none (thanks John!) and .what with John's cooking, and Bill's knowledge of the surrounding area and delightful stories, we were thoroughly spoiled!

“Superb B&B!!!”
Reviewed 4 November 2013 for a stay in October 2013

We stayed 3 nights at this absolutely lovely B&B in the middle of a small village near Lucca. The owners Bill & John are very very kind and the best hosts you could possibly imagine.

They have decorated the place with so much love for each little detail, which shows in every corner of the house. Everything you see or touch is of best quality and spotless clean. We often miss this kind of passion when traveling around the world - so well done Bill & John! After 10 min you already have the feeling you have known Bill & John forever due to their warmth and friendliness.

The beds and breakfast are also excellent. The only "negative" thing we would like to mention are the church bells in the village, which you hear all night if you are a light sleeper. It didnt bother us, since it has something very soothing and relaxing to it when you are on holidays :-).

We will definitely be back next year to enjoy this very special place on earth...

“No trip to the Tuscan region is complete without a stay at Il Rifugio”
Reviewed 25 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Four of us have just returned from a visit to Italy which began in Rome and ended in Venice with a much need respite in Lucca - a quaint town in the Tuscany region. We were lucky enough to discover Il Rifugio, a warm and inviting bed & breakfast owned by two of the most gracious hosts you will ever meet, Bill and John (and can't forget Aldo and Momi). From the moment we stepped out of the car, we felt like we were coming home. We arrived in the late afternoon and were offered cheese, crackers, nuts and wine made specifically for Bill and John next to a warm, inviting fire. We talked and laughed for hours as they have an extensive knowledge of the area as well as many stories to share. We continued getting to know each other with dinner at a great restaurant just up the hill - you must try the beans! After a very restful night's sleep in a warm comfy bed you are awakened by a rooster and the sounds of church bells coming from the beautiful stone church across the way beckoning the farmers to the fields (as legend would have it). Bill & John would have coffee on while preparing a phenomenal breakfast (which I won't give away as you must experience it on your own). Outside you are surrounded by beautiful gardens all created by Bill & John. I can only be envious of the beauty it will bring in the Spring when all the flowers are in bloom as it was breathtaking in the Fall. Bill & John provided us with directions, train schedules and recommendations for restaurants to aid us in our planned outings to the City of Lucca and Cinque Terre - both are must sees. Unfortunately, our stay had to end as we needed to move on to our next destination. With tears in my eyes, I gave hugs and said my good byes to our newly found friends. Bill and John, thank you so much for your warmth and welcoming natures and for opening your beautiful home to us!

“LIKE STAYING WITH FAMILY”
Reviewed 25 August 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Our extended family of four stayed at IL Rifugio B&B for one week in early July. We could not have asked for better accommodations and even better hosts. Bill and John treated us like family. From the moment we got there, we felt as if we were their extended family. Each morning, we were greeted with a wonderful breakfast of fresh tarts, croissants, yogurt, fruits and coffee or tea, all freshly made. Bill was a wonderful host and helped us with making plans to visit surrounding areas. In the afternoons, we would come home to relax with a wine and cheese intimate reception. In the evenings, there was a great little restaurant two blocks up the hill that we would walk to. Sitting out in the restaurant balcony overlooking olive groves while eating some great pizza and pasta was a wonderful way to end the day. The rooms at the B&B were newly refurbished and fabulous. My wife and I shared a large air conditioned master bedroom with a very comfortable king size bed and a beautifully appointed bathroom. Fresh flowers adorned our room thanks to John who is an expert flower arranger and to Bill who is an incredible gardner. Speaking of the gardens, what a fabulous array of flowers, including roses and every other flower that you can imagine. We could not have had a better time. This was truly a very special vacation thanks to Bill and John.
