After traveling for 3 weeks in Europe we arrived at Il Rifugio for our final stop. From the moment, we arrived to the moment we left all are expectation were exceeded. The property is beautifully restored and in a great location near Lucca, Pisa, and Florence. There are 3 bedroom suites and we rented all of them for the 5 of us.
We were concerned with the heat of Italy in the summer. The location could not have been more perfect. It was cool in the evenings where you did not need AC to sleep. Every morning it was still cool to late morning. We were meet with a wonderful breakfast every morning. In the late afternoon, we had a very enjoyable happy hour including great conversation with Bill & John.
Bill & John were wonderful host. By second day they were more friends than hosts. They were very helpful in arranging dinner reservations every night and recommending day trips.
When we return to Tuscany we will go out of our way to stay with them again.
Just a must stay when you are visiting the Pisa and Lucca area.
A peaceful and beautiful hide away - a top renovated property with the touch you will love it!
Just stay and enjoy this property and the host

When people ask us about our Italian vacation, I have to tell them our stay at Il Rifugio was the highlight. We stayed in Rome and Florence, but what we remember most fondly is our stay will Bill and John in the countryside. They were great hosts, always attentive and never intrusive. No detail was overlooked. We took over the whole inn for our family. We were welcomed very warmly. We were so comfortable during our visit. The breakfast every day was delicious with fresh baked goods from a local bakery. We enjoyed happy hour in the afternoon on the patio overlooking the gorgeous gardens. Bill and John made excellent recommendations on activities every day. I honestly can't say enough about the inn and the wonderful innkeepers.
What is not to love about a cozy home, outstanding hosts, a fresh breakfast, and beautiful scenery?!
You will get all of that, plus more at Il Rifugio. My family and I stayed here recently, for a little over a week, and we would all highly recommend this location to anyone looking for an absolutely stand out holiday!
First, lets talk location: nestled along the olive trees in the countryside, but conveniently located about 1 hour to Pisa, around 2 hours to Florence, 15 minutes to Lucca, and about 2 or so hours to Cinque Terre, this B&B presents the best for all interests! I mean come on, it doesn't get much better than that. This B&B is perfect for anyone looking to get away for a relaxing stay, but still has intentions to see the sights, then get away from the crowds at the end of the day.
Next, the atmosphere of the place: beautiful, comfortable, clean, and tastefully decorated. Flowers and plants spread throughout, as well as eclectic art and decor everywhere; just outstanding!
Lastly (although I could go on forever), the hosts Bill and John. They are now like family, I was actually sad to leave them. They were so insightful, attentive, and accommodating with everything and anything. Whether it was offering suggestions for day trips, providing light snacks to end the day, or just friendly conversation, they will steal your hearts.. I know they stole ours.
I cannot extend enough praise about our stay here, so I will end by saying that this b&b is a gem in Tuscany <3
Myself, my spouse, and two very dear friends rented a car at the airport and took off to find this place. Wow! If you want to experience really living in a small Italian village with all the comforts of home -- this is it, the best of all worlds. The hosts are magnificent in every respect of the word--they will handle anything that comes up, they have seen to your every need before you even show up, they guide you in all the right directions. Their home is right in the heart of the quintessential town you have been longing for. A neighborhood restaurant (incredible food-few tourists), ancient church bells during the day, silence at night, wonderful walks, and visual feasts every which way your turn. Our two bedrooms and two baths were completely separate, private, and well-appointed with luxurious amenities. Again, do not miss this opportunity (and take your TomTom for invaluable driving help). Also ask about where to go for the best gelato in the universe (try the very dark chocolate with dates, and the cinnamon--both world class!) Ciao Bella!
This beautiful home and it's owner's Bill and John were the pinnacle of delight on our 28 day holiday through 4 countries. We would in a heartbeat stay in their beautiful property and would stay a minimum of a week. Location, gorgeous gardens and Hosts who felt like friends when we left.... we miss it all !!!!
Lovely stay with my daughter at this holiday rental.
We had two rooms and a bathroom in our host's house, but with a quite separate staircase to our rooms, so it is very private. They were delightful, entertaining, good company, and excellent hosts. Their antique collection is to die for! We enjoyed our stay enormously and did a lot of travelling from this central location, to Florence, Barga, Vinci, Pisa, Cinque Terre, and Lucca to name but a few of the cities and towns we visited. Their fruit salad and toast for breakfast were second to none (thanks John!) and .what with John's cooking, and Bill's knowledge of the surrounding area and delightful stories, we were thoroughly spoiled!
