We booked a short break here, taking advantage of an Amazon deal for two nights' b&b with dinner and wine on the first night. Our welcome was warm and friendly, we were shown our room at once, and we were given plenty of information about mealtimes, facilities etc.

Our evening meal was really good - the quality and freshness of the ingredients was superb. Clive mentioned that he insists that the food is cooked to his standards, and it shows. We booked a table for the second night (Monday) as we left the dining room - there's an offer on Mondays at the moment, 'Any main course £7.50', and we wanted to be sure of getting a table. Our breakfast was just as good - cooked to your requirements, all fresh and good quality. Julie, Clive and the waitresses were excellent - nothing too much trouble. The ethic seems to be the provision of excellent service without being overweening, and this was upheld by the happy knack of courteous, friendly and practical attention, which we much prefer to the gushy insincerities you often get at some hotels. We never felt that we were treated any differently from other guests paying full price.

Our room was No 5, a double with an en suite shower room. It was very comfortable, spotlessly clean (like everywhere else in the hotel) with a 6ft bed and plenty of clothes storage. There was an extra blanket in the wardrobe, along with a hot/cold fan heater.

We'll definitely be returning in the future - food & service great, normal price isn't out of the way, and because it's only 8 miles or so from the M6 the hotel will make a great stopping off point on our regular journey from Shropshire to the Cairnryan ferry. We've found a gem!

Room Tip: Ours was Room 5, with en suite shower room. It was very comfortable, spotlessly clean (like everywh...

The pub is situated in a lovely location. The bedroom was small and needed updating but the bed was very comfortable and everything was clean. The bathroom for sole use of our room was along the hall. When booking I was led to blieve this was the only room available which clearly was not the case as only one other room occupied, perhaps this was due to it being an Amazon deal. All meals were very good value and quality. The rump steak was one of the best we have had, also local ales wer lovely. All in all a good value deal.

Just returned home after a lovely 2 night break at a The Dukes Head. We went on an Amazon deal which was excellent value for money. Everywhere was very clean and tidy. Our room (no 1) was small but adequate, as was the bathroom. The breakfast and the bar food was good. Our hostess very friendly and welcoming. The only slight complaints would be the poor water pressure in the shower and the fact that the duvet was very thick and heavy. Much too heavy for the time of year. This did not detract from our enjoyment of our stay however. We would definitely recommend!

I have put many reviews on Tripadvisor (always finding positives) and before anyone says 'people always find something to moan about' I myself have been frequently surprised by the nonsense that people do find to moan about. However our older children purchased a discount website 'deal' for Xmas for 2 nights at Dukes Head - there was no choice with dates but that was absolutely fine. The 'deal' they got is the same as the price advertised on the Dukes Head website so not a deal. A couple of queries resolved in advance efficiently on phone and welcome OK. We assumed that we were welcomed by Julie (the owner) but no intros. We had a double room with ensuite - Room 1. Room very small, badly in need of upgrading although clean (carpet looks dirty, sink is badly cracked and shower water pressure very very weak), horrendously creaky floor but part of charm. Lovely relaxing beer garden. We ate in Dukes Head on Friday night - food very good, nice wine - all good. Overnight - room stifling hot and had to keep windows open. There was a lot of noise from outside as room right above road and also in early morning there seemed to be deliveries to front door right under our room. We went down for breakfast in morning - nice bacon, eggs and sausages, weird black pudding with what looked like a 10p size bit of fat in middle (only in mine so don't think I'm missing a local delicacy), delicious toast but tinned tomatoes and plastic mushrooms!
Looking at things overall we decided not to stay a 2nd night - I note the many positive reviews but it just wasn't for us.
So we packed up and went to the bar which doubles as reception and handed our keys in. We explained to Clive??, again no intros, that 'our plans have changed' and we weren't staying a 2nd night and he looked at us and ... shrugged his shoulders! We hadn't been looking for a refund or questions about whether we were unhappy with stay but a shoulder shrug with the requisite accompanying facial expression was the last straw. I think there is a need to consider customer service skills, the girls in the restaurant were very polite and helpful and smiley as was the lady behind bar on Friday night but the 2 we assumed were Clive and Julie were the opposite. Running a business is hard work and I am sure that these guys work extremely hard but intros, smiles, deliveries to back door, fans in rooms and no shoulder shrugging are small things that would make a difference whilst the place continues with upgrade plans if that is what is happening. Also there must be better interim solution than exposed wires in open back boxes outside en suite.

Julie W, Manager at Dukes Head Inn, responded to this reviewResponded 29 June 2014

In response to a DEAL booked by the family, we have never run a DEAL at Xmas time so how could a DEAL have been booked! The rooms booked were booked online at full price, You never expressed you had booked a DEAL with us, asking what was included etc. or gave a booking code or voucher number on arrival . The only BOOKING DEAL we have done has been with Amazon, and we think a £89 stay for two including breakfast, including a three course meal for two including a bottle of wine... was a very good deal.. and that went online in February 8th 2014 and was sold out within 2 weeks.. which ends at the end of July. We are not a 5 star hotel just a small inn in a village, get real !

We went on an Amazon 2 night deal. Our room needed refurbishment but was spotlessly clean. The deal included a 3 course meal the first night. Be warn if you are a veggie there is no choice. The starter was soup celery & stilton soup but made with a meat base so no good to a veggie, The main course was vegetable & chick pea tagine, but rather bland. The other person had a starter of ribs which he said was very nice & the main, cumberland sausage which was ok. The waitress was very nice & tried to sort out another starter for the veggie but the chef didn't seem to want make anything else. We didn't eat there again as no point for the vegetarian.
The inn is fine for a base to visit the area.
On our last day at breakfast we felt the landlady was very abrupt with us but seemed fine with the other guests. I can only assume it was because I had a problem in the room & asked for it to be sorted. Also at breakfast the next day I asked for tomatos, mushrooms & egg but didn't get the egg. If they had no eggs an explanation would have been nice.

Did not expect such a warm welcome after a rather abrupt conversation with Clive on booking no need for any fears both Clive and Julie are very sincere in making your stay pleasant.
Just returned from a weekend away in Armathwaite a lovely part of the country. Dukes Head was very clean and cosy. Food in restaurant was first class from starters to dessert. Service was excellent at all times. We will certainly return to this lovely part of the country.
