Reviewed 23 July 2010

We were driving north from Oxford to northern Scotland and wanted to break out trip into two days. We found Willowbeck online as it was near the M6 and seemed a nice place to stop off (and better than a motel). We arrived a bit late (800pm) and saw that the hosts were serving dinner to the other guests. Since we hadn't booked, we weren't able to eat there (I highly recommend that you book to eat your dinner at the lodge) but the hosts quickly made a phone call and arranged for us to eat at a near by restaurant, which was delicious.
The house is newly renovated/built and all the amenities are current. it is cozy but open and bright. I have mold and dust mite allergies and was happy to find the rooms and linens and beds sparkling clean and fresh/new. the beds were comfortable and bathroom small but highly functional.
Breakfast was delicious and we agreed that if we were looking for a place to come back for a longer stay (weekend or a few days hiking in Cumbria anyone??) we would book into Willowbeck for the stay without hesitation.
It's always great to discover a little gem!

We spent 3 nights here and despite my reputation for finding fault, could not find fault with cleanliness, bed, food, facilities, ambiance, hosts, indeed it was as perfect a location for a quiet retreat. It is quite expensive but not for the quality of accomodation and service provided.
The house and garden are stunning.

Stayed one night en-route southbound. What a great find. Very personable hosts, who made us feel welcome.
We booked the evening meal and it was high quality with a cheeky bottle of Cabernet Sauvingnon to accompany it.
Room was exceptionally clean (as was the rest of the Lodge) and well-equipped.
Breakfast was a real treat and the choice was wide.
Would recommend highly especially to couples.

Stayed here for two nights and I think perfect sums it up really. Very warm welcome. Clean rooms and bathrooms. Plenty of space. We only had breakfast, but an evening meal is available, food was great. Advice about where to go locally. We live in orkney but have lots of family in England and have already recommended it to them as a place to stay on the way up to us. We will definately go back.

I work regularly near Carlisle and was recommended Willowbeck Lodge by a colleague as being one of the best B+Bs ever - I was not dissapointed!
Travelling away from home for long periods is very difficult but being at Willowbeck feels like staying with friends. I love it there so much I took my boyfriend for a romantic weekend and sent my father and his wife there as their wedding present!
John and Liz are kind and attentive hosts who bend over backwards to make you comfortable - in winter we were greeted by a roaring fire and glasses of mulled wine and in summer we could enjoy the view over their stunning garden. No detail is missed at Willowbeck and I cannot recommend it enough. Even if you have no interest in nature and walking Willowbeck Lodge is reason enough to venture into this beautiful part of the country.

Best place we have been in for a long time. Booked via internet (only room left) but when we got there we were informed there was a problem with the internet bookings and indeed we were the only one's staying that night.

After a tour of the room we went to the village for a nosey around and it was ok. Pub is ok but not great.

Returned and after a couple of hours in the room went down for Dinner. Have wine in the drawing room prior to the meal and the wine was excellent. The meal was spectacular and highly enjoyable.

Roaring fire with logs burning and crackling. We dimmed the lights and had drinks with our hosts, utterly charming.

Fantastic, Fantastic, Fantastic.

Do yourself a favour and give it a go – you won't regret it.

As we drove up the driveway to Willobeck Lodge, after being knocked out by the location, we received a second knockout from the beauty of the building we were to stay in. The welcome was one of the warmest we have had, and Liz and John were the perfect hosts and made us feel at home. The Willow room we stayed in was purely fantastic, beautifully clean as was the bathroom. Beautiful views of the garden and pond from the window. Fabulous tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits. A lovely detail was two Thorntons chocolates on a silver tray on both days (a real taste of home for us!). The bathroom was just fab, lovely bath, fantastic shower...and so clean!!!
We had a meal in the hotel on both nights in the wonderful spacious conservatory (how we wish this belonged to us...). The author of this review is a tricky eater, this however, did not phase Liz one bit, and she went out of her way to accomodate my strange eating habits...The Beetroot and red onion crumble is the most delicious vegetarian dish I have ever tasted. everything was beautifully presented, with an amazing attention to detail. My partner loves Pimms and lemonade, normally this is thrown in a glass with a slice of cucumber...not at the Willowbeck Lodge..it was served in a beautifully 'goldfish bowl' type glass, with fresh fruit, fresh mint and ice...amazing.
Liz and John were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful, and made us aware that they fully respected that we might just want to stay in our room and watch TV or a DVD, but told us we were very welcome to sit in the conservatory or sitting room downstairs with a drink, which made us feel very welcome. Staff who helped out at meal times were very polite, friendly and welcoming.
The bed was extremely comfortable and clean and fresh, to the point it was difficult to get out of in the morning due to the complete comfort!! The hotel was a comfortable temperature throughout, and access to a library and internet are at your fingertips.
Breakfast was simply beautiful..fresh juices, homemade bread toast (to die for) beautifully presented and tasting breakfasts.
I have personally stayed in a number of guest houses, and hotels and motels over the years, this has to be one of the most exceptional guest houses I have had the pleasure to stay in.
Liz and John should be very proud of what they have achieved here, an all round fantastic experience coupled with exceptional quality of service for paying guests.
If you visit Carlisle and surrounding areas and do not stay here.......all I can say is "I urge you to, I guarantee you will not be disappointed".
Well done and thanks Liz and John, we look forward to our next visit!
Alan & Jackie xxx
