“Absolutely Fantastic!”
Reviewed 21 July 2012

If you are after a place to relax, this places is THE PLACE to visit. Fantastic quiet place with a little number of guests on a decent piece of land. Stunning beaches with no people! Patty, the owner of the resort is very nice and helpful. A great bonus is the local staff! They are extremely friendly and more than happy to disclose aspects of the local life in Tonga... Try different types of coconuts, learn how to climb coconut trees... We really enjoyed evenings with guitar and kava. If you are lucky (we were) you might see whales right from the resort beach. This place was definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Highly RECOMMENDED!

We stayed for three nights in January 2012. Loved everything about it even before we got off the boat. Patti and Semi are so much fun and wonderful hosts. The island itself has to be seen to be believed. We have never stayed somewhere so private, you can walk all day and not bump into another soul. Having a beach on both sides gives you great protection from the wind, regardless of which way it is blowing. Good snorkelling on the reef, great cooking, and heaps of cold beer! Fales are totally cute - you'd be pressed to find a better spot in Tonga. Just book it.

If you are visiting Tonga and are in need of total relaxation, a trip to Ha'apai to stay at Serenity Beaches Resort is an absolute must! Tucked away on the gorgeous robinson crusoe style island of Uoleva, Serenity Beaches provides a wonderful place to chill out, reconnect with your loved ones and yourself. The balinese style fales are really lovely and it's so peaceful lying under your mosquito net at night listening to the sound of the crashing waves...Patti, Semi and Malakai are wonderful hosts and the meals were excellent...Patti (who is a qualified massage therapist) also gives an amazing lomi lomi massage! my husband and I took our best friends (visit from nz) up to Serenity for 3 nights but it felt like we were there for a week....we can't wait to go back!

My sister and I stayed here for 2 nights - we decided to split 2 nights at a cheaper more basic accommodation and splurged on 2 nights at Serenity.

Serenity was beautiful, every aspect of it - the wooden teak (?) houses (which Patti had bought from Bali, disassembled and reassembled on the island!), the wooden furnishings, the solar powered guide lights at night, the gorgeous white stretch of beach and clear waters (there aren't too many tourists on the island - perfect for quiet strolls and cool morning/evening swims), the coconut trees around the resort (when we were there, you could get coconuts for free! just tell the ladies at the bar in the restaurant and one of the strong young men would get a coconut for you!), the staff.. the Tongan ladies and young men, Patti and Semi.. were all very very friendly.

We were the first to stay in the Tongan style hut - it was decorated with Tongan decorated bark, leaves as a roof, very cooling and comfortable. It had mosquito netting too, keeping you safe from Tongan mozzies!

The restaurant is located at the front, facing the beach - where you can hang out in the mornings, play board games (they have several books and games - EXCELLENT for rainy days!)... or.. SPOT hump WHALES while having breakfast! that's what I did! Well.. we were in Tonga in Sept - best time for whales!

Food was good - quite pricey and portions were medium size (excellent for us as we were not big eaters.. but you might need seconds for dinner if you went out diving all day!). For breakfast we got a choice of french toast or eggs.. with supply of Tongan coffee (very good!), a selection of teas and chopped fruits! They do serve a bit of Tongan menu for dinner.. but its mostly Western food.

There are wooden huts with lazy chairs.. if you have the wooden houses facing the other side of the island.. its more quiet and each house has its own hammock. Perfect for relaxing. We got to use the snorkelling gear for free.. can get them from the restaurant, or ask Patti.

Our hut didn't have its own shower - it was for 2 - we used the shared shower which was very interesting! it was a open roofed hut - with a spiral entrance (you won't be able to see who was showering from the outside).... very natural feel - it had a rain shower! feels like you're showering in the forest... I really liked that!

one of the nights.. the resort had a campfire! all the guests sat around the fire.. underneath the beautiful Tongan stars (I recommend sleeping under the stars if you get the chance to) - and each person had to sing a song from their own country! it was lovely.. the Tongan ladies and guys at the resort also treated us to their traditional songs.. beautiful. Did you know almost all Tongans could sing really well?

In a nutshell - Serenity Beaches is a great place for relaxing.. if you have the budget! It's not too expensive (can't remember how much we paid per night but something around NZD 180 per night i think!)... but its probably the most expensive option on Uoleva Island. Price includes breakfast.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the other side of the island

Just returned from an amazing trip to Tonga. We spent 3 nights at Serenity Beach, which was not nearly enough time to enjoy this special place.
Patti, the owner, is truely the most inspiring person I have ever met. She is the true definition of "Don't be afraid to dream", you just might get everything you want.
Patti and Semi have created their own little paradise on this fantasy island, which they so graciously share with their guests. Although, you never really feel like a guest. We felt more like we were visiting old friends from the second we arrived.
This is not a 5 star luxury resort, but it is 5 star camping with superb service from Patti and Semi.
The fales are comfortable, spotless, very private and romantic. Semi, after cooking a fabulous meal, sneaks down to your fale to light the solar candles, drape your bed with the mosquito net and leave a thermos for hot water for your AM coffee on your deck.
The white sandy beach is endless with crystal blue water. The snorkeling was fabulous right in front of the fales. Fishing was also excellent. We caught all kinds of fish off the kayaks in front of the resort, which Semi would add his local culinary flare to each evening for all to enjoy.
If you are fortunate enough to travel to Tonga you must treat yourselves to this very special experience.
Thanks Patti and Semi

Was on Uoleva in August 2009. Stayed two weeks and it felt like a year in paradies. Patti and Semi have done an incredible job by building this spot in the great waters of the south pacific. Great place to forget about all the society pressure, time wasting meetings. A little slice of haven with a great hearted Patti. Thanks a lot for all. Ofa atu.

First of all Patti, the lady who founded and runs Serenity, is one of the most inspiring people I have ever had the pleasure to meet - Serenity is the answer to the question "what would you be doing if you knew you couldn't fail?" and she has created something truly special and makes you feel genuinely welcome to be part of it.
The island is practically deserted and no footprints on the beach except your own is not only possible but highly probable, twenty metres off the beach is an astonishing fan coral forest complete with a full complement of brightly coloured fish.
The fales are beautiful and very secluded, separated from the main building by a pleasant walk through the lush native vegetation with the sea a few metres away from the foot of your comfortable, mosquito net covered bed.
If you are looking for an experience that really makes you feel like you are Robinson Crusoe but without sacrificing anything you need from the twenty first century Serenity is probably the place for you.
