Feather Down Farms at College Farm
Reviewed 11 September 2011

Our first Featherdown Farm experience - it was amazing! Gorgeous, clean, comfortable, warm accommodation; lovely welcome from both Lucy and Marcus (homemade chocolate cake highly recommended!) - reliable, friendly service - fresh bread every morning, lovely food to pre-order from BBQ dinner to breakfast; good local knowledge and advice; well stocked farm larder and good info leaflets to browse through; fantastic with the children - lovely experiences from having their own chickens, collecting eggs, playing with the family dog Badger (who will be much missed by my son!), grooming the lovely ponies Henry and Phantom, the freedom to roam the farm on bikes or by foot - amazing local wildlife and stunning scenery. Very relaxing for us, the children didn't want to go home and have asked us to rebook for next year already! 5***** all the way - an amazing experience.

Room Tip: All tents are in a perfect location for scenery, shop and showers etc.

This was our first feather down farm holiday, so I can't really compare it to other featehr down farms, but certainly it was everything I hoped for. The tents and probably the setting are going to be great whichever feather down farm you go to, but I'm not sure if all of them would rate as highly as college farm for friendliness. Lucy and Marcus really did go out of their way to make us feel welcome and involve us with the farm, and the evening round the bread oven was lovely. Plenty to do in surrounding area, especailly if the weather is good. We perticualry enjoyed taking a " day cruiser" out on the Norfolk broads for a couple of hours, with the kids ( aged 6 and 7) driving the boat; not sure if this is allowed, but Norfolk is so laid back that no-one seemed to mind. Also had a surreal family moment when we all ended up roller skating/ falling over at a roller-disco on lowestoft pier.
Only slight down side for us is that our tent seemed to attract a lot of mosquitoes, but I don't think htey carry any nasty diseases in Norfolk so take some repellant and you should be fine!

College farm was the perfect family holiday. our children loved the experience of staying in a tent and cooking on a wood burning stove within the tent while the adults enjoyed all the fun of camping but with the luxury of a comfortable bed and the basic amenities you have at home. The whole week was made extra special because of the family who run feather down farm at college farm aldeby marcus and lucy who made you feel very welcome with farm walks, horse grooming, egg collecting etc etc and you felt as if the farm was your own. A highly recomended very scenic location which the family have thoroughly enjoyed.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are very proud to have been voted as farm of the year for 2013. Our farm is located on the southerly tip of the Norfolk Broads and a short drive from many of Norfolk’s outstanding beaches and coastal towns such as Southwold. On the farm we would love to show you our herd of cattle that graze on the marshes, our chickens that reside at the top of the Feather Down field and in the farmyard you’ll find horses, lots of friendly dogs, guinea fowl and Dolly our pet cow. On the farm we would love to show you our herd of cattle that graze on the marshes, our chickens that reside at the top of the Feather Down field and in the farmyard you’ll find horses, lots of friendly dogs, guinea fowl and Dolly our pet cow.We are Marcus, Lucy, Henry and William Daniels. We keep a herd of mixed breed cattle that graze on the marshes, whilst the chickens reside at the top of the Feather Down field. In the farmyard you’ll find horses, guinea fowl, Dolly the pet cow and plenty of friendly dogs. The tents are located on a south-facing grassy field at the top of the farm-yard that slopes gently down to the marshes. If you come and visit in August or September then you will get to stay alongside the swaying sunflowers. There is a stunning view from all the tents over the marsh-land where the cattle graze down to the River Waveney. Guests can watch the mist roll in off the river and envelop the marshes, at dusk and early in the morning. You might also catch a glimpse of barn owls hunting or see one of the three species of deer we have in the locality. There is so much to do here you won’t need to stray further than the farm, don’t miss our farm tour, you can enjoy a wander on the marshes, take a picnic to the river, help us to move and check the cattle, and assist in looking after the lambs, our communal horse-grooming session is always a hit and don't forget to collect the eggs from the henhouse! If you are here for a rest you can sit out in front of your tent and watch the sails of the pleasure craft in the distance pootling up and down the River Waveney. Our farm larder has meat and eggs produced on the farm or sourced from one of our farm neighbours. You’ll also find local apple juice and ice cream there as well as freshly baked cakes and treats by Lucy. ... more   less
