Caroni Bird Sanctuary
Reviewed 27 November 2012

We took in the Caroni Sanctuary as part of an afternoon tour from Asa Wright. We were part of a Madoo Tour which went well enough, but we returned to dock twice to pick up late arrivals. This cut into our time and was frustraiting as the weather was overcast and we were losing the daylight quickly with an earlier sunset in November. They should not start this trip as late as 4pm. The guide showed us a few things including two boas in the trees, but it would seem the only focus was getting us to the scarlet ibis. We were three birders and guide, so we were somewhat disappointed with the lack of information along the way. Even our guide kept quiet. However, the ibis are the star of the trip and the colours were so brilliant - like scarlet bows on a Christmas tree.

This was a most unusual trip. We arrived at the dock just in time as there had been an accident on the freeway. My advice would be to leave plenty of time to get there as traffic can be very heavy. Also take your own water and mosquito spray. There are washrooms but they are basic. The guide on our boat was very knowledgable, pointing out boas (in the trees overhead), iguanas, crabs and a variety of birds. The most magnificent site was the thousands of white egrets and scarlet ibis coming in to roost at sunset. An unmissable spectacle!

The best time to see the beautiful Scarlet Ibis is just before dusk between five and six pm.That's when they return to their sleep the night away. The mangrove are covered in red as the take over the trees by their hundreds. To top it off one can see the sunset and that is a sight to behold.....simply magnificent.

This trip exceeded expectations. We had no idea there would be so many scarlet ibis, egrets & herons coming to roost. It just went on and on.
You need to do this trip late afternoon to get the most of this spectacle. Plan to arrive at the dock for the boat trip between 3.30 & 4pm. The Port of Spain traffic can hold you up considerably, and there were several late arrivals brought out separately by motor boat to join us. They missed a lot.
Our guide didn't give much extra information about the wildlife, but we saw a boa in a tree.....a bonus.
You can buy bottled water to take on the boat, but no food. And there are toilets at the boat yard. No souvenirs or shops.
