Took 4pm boat tour offered by Nanna Tours (right at the entrance to the sanctuary), for TT$60 per person, which I thought was extremely good value for money considering the length of tour and enjoyment factor. Definitely pack the bug spray and have your camera (with at least a 55-250mm range zoom lens) and/or binoculars ready. The mangrove is teeming with wildlife of all kinds. Keep your eyes on the shore line as you slowly make your way down the canal. If you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of a caiman crocodile, or some Scarlet Ibis feeding inside. Don't forget to look up as you slide under the overhanging branches. You may see a tree boa twisted up having a nap above you. That was an unexpected surprise! The guide was very good at spotting the wildlife and making sure you had the opportunity for a photo or two. The scene of the setting sun and the small islands as you head into the outer swamp is breathtaking! You will sit in the boat some distance from the island where the Scarlet Ibis land and nest for the night, so you'll need a zoom lens to get some good shots. It's amazing to watch flock after flock of birds (10-20 at a time) come gliding in, flutter and land. We sat for about 30 minutes and watched the birds come in, by the time we left the trees on the small island were totally packed with bright red birds, another striking scene! The contrast of the bright red birds against the blue sky is so beautiful, as is the contrast of the bright white egrets intermixed with the bright red Ibis! I have never seen anything like it...
Definitely want to go again and take family and friends visiting from abroad!!

Pack lots of bug spray and a well charged camera. I recommend that you book in advance for the tour. Also you can ask about the fishing tours.

The first thing to greet you at the Facility entrance to the Bird Sanctuary is the silence and serenity and incredible beauty of the surrounding environment. You'll hire a boat operator who's right there on spot to start the journey from 5 p.m. and take a boat ride through another world. The Sanctuary is home to our National Bird - The Scarlet Ibis - and many other species estuarine avifauna.

Most people come specifically to witness the trees as they come alive in deep red...a colour scheme created by the astounding concentration of Ibis in this part of the country,
You will witness snakes, aquatic animals, view the various types of mangrove in full splendour ( protectors of coastlines ) as well as varieties of freshwater biota unique to this world famous habitat.

To get there from Port of Spain, drive South along the Uriah Butler Highway and cross the highway to the West at the Bird Sanctuary overpass. Follow the signs to the Forestry Office where there will be staff and operators willing to assist. It is best to go in the evening from about 4 p.m. and make your arrangements.

There is something genuinely delightful about the unpredictability of traveling into a wilderness area in a small boat hoping to catch a glimpse of a spectacular animal, in this case a flock of Scarlet Ibis. The journey was very informative and visually interesting traveling through the mangrove swamps constantly on the lookout for the elusive birds. Some of the children on the boat were having the time of their life scanning through the undergrowth and announcing 'Ibis'. An excellent tour which was just the right length and very child friendly.

The Caroni Swamp tour is a must for anyone visiting Trinidad. Easy access off the highway (the exit itself is not well-marked, however). The variety of birds and other wildlife is amazing, as is the sunset. Our guide was well-versed with the area and pointed out wildlife and many varieties of birds. We spent about 30 minutes parked quietly (well, some of us were quiet, some eventually quieted down) watching flocks of scarlet ibis, among others, come in to roost for the night on an island. By the time we departed the area the island was covered in red. What a sight! We plan to go again when we are next in Trinidad.

This tour lasts about 2 hours, so take water and snacks, as well as sunscreen, hat or visor. Make sure your camera battery is fully charged. Also, you are on the boat the entire 2 hours so be prepared for that.
