We went with the boats going out 16:00 to watch the red Ibis return to the swamp. It is truly magical to see them arrive in the sunset. During the trip we were also able to see parrots, a boa, an eagle, crabs, fishes and lots of mangrove.

“A nature lover's delight.”
Reviewed 11 March 2014

The swamp tour was educational and informative .We used the company that operates inside the sanctuary itself. I think the name of the company is Madoos and they seem to be the official tour company of the Caroin Bird Sanctuary. There are other companies operating in the swamp but this one is located inside the gates of the facility. You have to call in advance ,make reservations and you will be given directions.

Their # can be found on the official Bird Sanctuary web site. We took the 4PM tour, which is the best time to see the Ibis return to roost.
Going down the swamp taking in the sights and waiting for the Ibis to return in the evening ,with the sunset as a backdrop was breathtaking.

“Nature Haven”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

Tucked away from the frantic pace of Port of Spain, Caroni Swamp is absolutely worth a visit. Once on the water, it feels as though you've entered another world. Whether by tour biat or kayak, it's peaceful and tranquil. On hot days, bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and insect repellant. Preferred the kayak option just to go at a nice pace without a boatload of others. The tour boats are essentially small wooden boats outfitted with bench seats and an outboard motor. Probably best not to bring kids under 3 on this. Whether visiting or living in Trinidad, definitely a must-see.

“Delightful Nature Tour”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

Took 4pm boat tour offered by Nanna Tours (right at the entrance to the sanctuary), for TT$60 per person, which I thought was extremely good value for money considering the length of tour and enjoyment factor. Definitely pack the bug spray and have your camera (with at least a 55-250mm range zoom lens) and/or binoculars ready. The mangrove is teeming with wildlife of all kinds. Keep your eyes on the shore line as you slowly make your way down the canal. If you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of a caiman crocodile, or some Scarlet Ibis feeding inside. Don't forget to look up as you slide under the overhanging branches. You may see a tree boa twisted up having a nap above you. That was an unexpected surprise! The guide was very good at spotting the wildlife and making sure you had the opportunity for a photo or two. The scene of the setting sun and the small islands as you head into the outer swamp is breathtaking! You will sit in the boat some distance from the island where the Scarlet Ibis land and nest for the night, so you'll need a zoom lens to get some good shots. It's amazing to watch flock after flock of birds (10-20 at a time) come gliding in, flutter and land. We sat for about 30 minutes and watched the birds come in, by the time we left the trees on the small island were totally packed with bright red birds, another striking scene! The contrast of the bright red birds against the blue sky is so beautiful, as is the contrast of the bright white egrets intermixed with the bright red Ibis! I have never seen anything like it...
Definitely want to go again and take family and friends visiting from abroad!!
