“Perfect place to chill and enjoy sunsets”
Reviewed 18 October 2011

Escaping from the hype and party scene of El Tunco, we headed to La Tortuga based on rave tripadvisor reviews. We stayed 3 nights. My husband and I, plus our 2 dogs had a relaxing time at La Tortuga; we enjoyed our experience and the amazing sunsets.

Plus:
-Dog friendly!!! Yuppee! Unbelievable frisbee sessions.
-Your very own secluded beach. Long stretches of expansive white sand. Bath water waves where you can spend hours floating and watching the pelicans.
-Spacious and open air accommodations. We stayed in one of the cabanas that was large enough for 6. This was the perfect size for us and our dogs...and enough space to roll out the yoga mats for a good workout. Oh, and hammocks galore!
-Excellent value. For low season, we paid $40 USD.
-Very good food. There's a restaurant (no outside food is allowed). Loved the fish soup (sopa de pescado). The pasta carbonara is devilishly delish. Prices could be more on the local standard, but the value of the accommodations and your very own secluded beach makes up for it.
-Great staff and service. Staff are very friendly (helps to speak spanish). The manager, Veronica...super helpful and attentive. One staff member helped us with directions (we came with our car), he drew us a map on the sand. Tom, the host let us borrow his long board!
-Turtles. There's a turtle nesting area right in front of the hotel.

Minus:
-Comfort level was a little too rustic for us...a la camping/backpackers vs a true resort style. Helps to keep an open mind, the value and your very own secluded beach makes up for it.
-My pet peeve. There was only artificial orange juice available. Comes with breakfast. Would have preferred the real thing.

Tip. Before it gets dark out, make sure you get your dinner order in or the staff might pack up and leave for the night.

Room Tip: I'd recommend the casitas/cabanas on the west wing. Cooler breezes and spacious.

Where to start? We arrived to a very friendly welcome and to find we had this resort-type accommodation all to ourselves. We couldn't understand why as this place was amazing.
We decided to take the 'dorm' room option which was a lovely, spacious room with comfy double beds, nice pillows (a plus for me) and a bathroom and it was so cheap!
It is situated right on a clean beach, has a pool and lots of hammocks to enjoy lazing about.
The staff were amazing, so friendly and willing to do anything to ensure you enjoy your stay. The food was delicious too!
If you are wanting to get active you can surf out the front on the FREE surfboards, take a trip to a great surf break, visit their local school, watch turtles laying eggs at night, possibly see turtles hatch in their hatchery, amongst other things. True to the name, they are taking a step I'm the right direction in turtle conservation which they need alot more of in this country.
I couldn't recommend this place enough, it has been a highlight of our whole Latin America trip, a hidden jewel in paradise!

If you are interested in beautiful beaches, nice weather, exciting day trips, good surfing, great local seafood, and a true getaway....LA Tortuga is your location! I recommend the waterfall tour, the Nibbling fish pond, and richard hotel on the ocean. I would also bush up on some Spanish before you go. Speaking the language will enrich your cultural experience. Don't forget to visit the Yoga Temple for all you Yogis. Make sure to also say hi to Albert the rescued Pelican. Tom is the owner of the hotel and has also set up a Turtle habitat. Tom's sister Patty has opened a school to educate the children. One last tip. Make sure to drink the Coconuts that are plentiful at the hotel. LA Tortuga is truly the best kept secret in El Salvador.

Room Tip: Cant go wrong....you are on the beach!

As a surfer for 25 years plus world traveler, I look for those hidden gems and La Tortuga Verde is certainly one of them. Accommodations were wonderful and super clean, fair prices (except a $60 day trip to La Union, pass on that), super friendly and attentive staff, amazing food while catering to dietary needs, great amenities such as outdoor showers, fresh pool, extreme hammocking all around the property, open air yoga and massage cabinas and an all around very relaxing stay. On top of it, La Tortuga is a short drive along the beach, or via a local road, or via their very own boat for access to Las Flores surf break. The proprietor is a long-time ripper and locally involved person as well. Lastly, La Tortuga Verde is sensitive to traditional local culture where families spend their Sunday enjoying the beach at La Tortuga Verde. They cater to your relaxation entirely.

Room Tip: Rooms include a combination of closed door bedroom(s) plus open area bed and hammocks.

I am tempted to not tell anyone about this treasure as I would love to keep it all for myself, but that wouldn't be very considerate of me.
Everything about La Tortuga Verde was stellar during our 8 day stay, We had hopes of traveling to check out different areas of El Salvador but couldn't be dragged away once we settled in.
The accommodations were clean and comfortable with options to sleep in a room, a screened in area or a hammock in a screened in area. There is a restaurant with a wonderful chef that is able to create both delicious local food and some comfort foods from back home as well. I ate everything and loved it all.
Las Flores surf break is a 10 min drive down the beach with one of the best guides to offer. The surf is world class, especially if you love Rights.
La Tortuga also boasts a Yoga space for practice and they are hoping to offer Yoga Retreats soon so stay posted. They is also a nice pool for lounging the day away with plenty of hammocks for afternoon siestas.
Above all the La Tortuga staff is AWESOME ! From the front desk, chef, guide and owner, they all are top class.
Again, I am tempted to not broadcast this review as I would love to keep it a secret for myself and friends, but ..... I'm sure you will appreciate it and pass it on to only those that are worthy of such a wonderful travel experience.

..... Did I mention there is an airport pick up / drop off if needed?
