“A disappointment.”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

Having heard fantastic things about the food we were really excited to visit the pub however we were left feeling very underwhelmed. The drinks took a while to arrive then arrived one at a time, there were only two of us! The starter was lovely but the main courses were nothing special, my fish was over cooked and dry, the lamb burger was bland and when we asked for vinegar we were brought ketchup instead. The service could do with improvement. We won't be rushing back.

arrived late after working hard, stayed in Room 205 ( 4 poster big bed ) good quality room and spacious.
Ate in bar, the food was genuinely wholesome and home made. Beer great Wadworth 6x. Recommended food and drink, staff very helpful and attentive, table service was great.
Great location in a time forgotten village.

Room Tip: ask staff they work there.

We stayed at the George for one night in April. It is the second time I have been there and it did not disappoint. The rooms are beautiful and the beds are very comfy. We had a meal in the restaurant and the food was superb. The staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend staying at the George and hope to be back in the near future.

The George is situated in the village of Nunney almost directly opposite the ruined moated castle. There is ample car parking at the back of the hotel which is accessed through an archway. There are also parking spaces directly across the road.
Once inside there is a warm welcoming atmosphere in the reception and bar area.
Our room was on the top floor with a view of the castle. It had a spotless, modern bathroom with a bath and a hand–held shower. The windows did not close completely but we expect that they will eventually be replaced as part of the on-going renovations. This did not concern us as the weather was mild but it could be slightly cold in winter.
We ate our evening meal in the dining area and it was superb. We had booked as it was very busy which is always a good sign. The young staff were very pleasant, attentive and efficient. Portions were more than adequate and perfectly presented. We could not find anything at all to complain about and would thoroughly recommend the food. Breakfast was equally as good.
Our only slight concern regarding our stay was that the mattress in our room (13) was very soft and would benefit from being replaced. Despite this (you can't please everyone) this we would thoroughly recommend The George.

Room Tip: Perhaps avoid room 13 unless you like a reallly soft mattress

We have heard good things about The George and, on arrival, it looked quite good with a mix of contemporary whilst retaining some of the older features of this lovely building although there is a risk that it could feel a little like a hotel reception with night club lighting.
As part of a group of 12, we were put on a long table in a comfortable side room, which was quite nice.
Our orders were taken and the food started to arrive but we had to request missing side orders, one of which never arrived. We also had to sake several times for jugs of water for the table, which then arrived without glasses.
The food is okay, nothing fancy or special - I would say pub food rather than restaurant but it was hot and cooked well.
Some of the desserts looked okay, although most just had ice cream, but I was sharing a creme brûlée, which was, I think, supposed to be stem ginger and orange but had no real flavour and a very lumpy texture - when we raised this, we were told the lumps were probably the ginger but they tasted more like flour so we returned it.
Overall, we enjoyed the evening but the service could do with improving and the menu might benefit from a 'less is more' approach.

Thank you for taking the time to review The George. Firstly may I sincerely apologise for your less than perfect experience with us.

I did talk to the on duty manager about the issues you experienced on your visit and have discussed your service issues with the team and re-iterated the importance of an outstanding guest experience for each and every guest. I also spoke to the team in the kitchen with regard the brulee you received and they also said most likely the texture was down to the ginger and orange. However having discussed this with my head chef they have now made changes to the recipe and since your visit we have sold 100's of brulees without a single complaint.

I do hope you will give us a second chance and visit us again in the future.

we booked & room & had an evening meal. we arrived before check-In time but was shown straight to room no problems. The room (No.14) was very large & had everything we needed. The pub was a hive of activity, was nice to see we had picked a popular place.

Later we asked for a taxi number & 1 of the bar staff called for me, very helpful.

Our evening meal was amazing home cooked food, Ive never tasted prawns like it ! The service was friendly, chatty & helpful. Will definitely be returning & will highly recommend to people.

I have stayed at the George twice in the last two weeks and found it to be a sympathetically modernised Inn in a beautiful setting which has obviously had a lot of money spent on it. Lovely food both at dinner and breakfast and caring staff throughout. Room 13 overlooking the castle has bags of character but an uncomfortable bed (to be rectified soon, I am told). Room 9 has a very comfortable bed and terrific shower but is noisier. This hotel is very close to being excellent, just that last 5% to go.
