My husband, 2 daughters (aged 4 and 6) and I have enjoyed out week's stay at Le Caillau very much. For us it had everything: comfortable and spacious French farmhouse / 'shabby chic' style accommodation; use of a massive garden which included trampoline, swings, goats in an enclosure - which my daughters delighted in feeding regularly; our own enclosed pool with decking (not huge, but plenty big enough for us, and solar-heated so refreshing in the heat). We also used the BBQ and outside dining table / terrace overlooking the garden, and when the children had gone to bed, we enjoyed sampling the local wine on our 2nd, West-facing terrace overlooking the vineyards and sunset.
A huge bonus of staying at Le Caillau is the fact that you have the self-catering option, but you are also next to a fabulous and popular restaurant which is also run by the British owners Chas and Caroline. The restaurant is open every lunchtime and on Wed - Sat evenings. The food was delicious and the children could play happily in the courtyard between courses as it has a relaxed atmosphere. (We could have had meals delivered to our terrace had we wished too).
There is much to do in the Lot region and when the weather was overcast we enjoyed Bonaguil Castle / Chateau (40 mins), Rocamadour (1hr30), and onto the Padirac caves (15 mins further) - which were all spectacular. We also made use of Le Caillou's pottery cafe which fired our painted items in a couple of days. Other options include visiting local markets, exploring Cahors or canoeing on the Lot.
The scenery, setting, food and wine were excellent - but the little extras which Chas and Caroline provided such as the box of games, DVDs, goody-bags with toy bunnies and crafts, cheese, meats, basics, bottle of wine and L'Occitane toiletries etc made it even more special. Our hosts were unobtrusive yet available if needed - and we have already recommended Le Caillou to friends, and hope to come again!
A great place to stay. Beautifully decorated gite with access to a large garden with trampoline and swimming pool, and goats and chickens to keep our 4 year old amused.
Baby things provided made life easier as well.
The on site restaurant served great food and wine with great service from Chas and the team.
Although there are no local amenities (except vineyards) there are lots of things to do within driving distance.
A great week which I would recommend.
