“New owners, different standards”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2013

This hotel changed hands in 2013.

It is no longer in the Relais de Silence association.

We have visited this modest hotel many times in the past and, when we arrived for a few days there in September this year, expected to receive the same warm welcome, careful attention to detail and excellent food that we had enjoyed previously. Sadly, this was not the case. The very pleasant Belgian receptionist, whom we knew from previous visits, did indeed welcome us, but when later on we encountered the new owners we discovered they are, surprisingly, quite antagonistic towards their guests.

Immediately after dinner on our first night, our polite request for breakfast in our room the next morning (as had been our habit at this hotel in the past) met with a curt 'non' from Monsieur - and when he was able to drag his eyes from a game he was playing on the computer screen at reception he went on to speak aggressively and at length (in French) about the difficulties he has in staffing the hotel.

He was not at all apologetic about not being able to fulfil our simple request, rather we were made to feel we were asking for something quite unreasonable. He then asked brusquely if we had enjoyed dinner - unfortunately I had not, and told him so, because I had asked for my veal to be pink but it was overcooked and not at all what I had expected.

Also, there is a shortage of vegetables to accompany the main courses on the menu. When, two days later, Madame challenged me about my mild comments to her husband about the way in which the veal had been overcooked, I felt I should ask why there were no vegetables to accompany some main courses and she then instructed me to read her Livre d'Or, the guest book, where she claimed there were many glowing reports from other guests who had loved the food.

All I can say is that when we were at the hotel this year the food was not nearly as good as it had been in the past - the menu was limited, and the desserts looked as if they had been mass produced by an external supplier.

One night when we were there the new owners sat having quite a noisy dinner party with friends or family in a corner of the dining room. I felt very sorry for the two members of staff who were rushed off their feet trying to serve them and everyone else. The previous owners were very attentive to guests and used to help the staff with all tasks, rather than sitting down and expecting to be waited on as if they were guests - as the new owners seemed to be doing.

The general upkeep of the hotel seems to have suffered a bit too under the new owners. There was green algae on the balcony wall facing into our room. Also, I should mention the unpleasant smell that was wafting towards the hotel from time to time. It may have come from the nearby river, but the river bed seemed to be dry when we were there so we wondered if the smell might be emanating from a septic tank.

we were in the midst of a 200 mile trek from Manosque to Langogne on the GR4 (and GR6, GR9 and many PR trails as well) and the Hotel Bellerive was a welcome respite. We had hiked 16 miles that hot September day, and had to add a little under a mile to find the hotel which is just south of town, but it was worth the effort. Nestled among trees overlooking Les Dentelles, it was a little bit of heaven for us for the night. The rooms are comfortable, the location serene and the dinner out of this world. My wife claims she has never had such a delicious dessert. And breakfast was none to shabby either, perfect for preparing ourselves for the hike through the Rhone Valley.

The view is the best thing about this hotel - rooms are dated and the bathroom became a swimming pool when you showered- food only fair and very pricey- only sell a Dutch beer and in small bottles - also overpriced- pool nice but cold- tinned peaches at breakfast!! - also over priced
Staff pleasant

Stayed for 4 nights on a demi pension basis. The hotel is wondefully situated in the vineyards near Rasteau with Vaison le Romaine being the nearest town and well worth a visit. The rooms are of 3 star quality and we chose an upstairs room with balcony. Each has a view of the garden or the surrounding countryside.
Breakfast is taken on the large terrace which has a splendid view of the Dentilles and Mont Ventoux. Dinner, likewise can be taken there or inside the air conditioned restaurant. To take either on the terrace with such views is an amazing and restful experience.
The food is truly excellent. So is the welcome. This is the 31st year that the Petrier family have run this Relais du Silence and Madame Petrier still greets her guests each evening as they dine.

English is spoken at Reception but a little French comes in useful (but is not essential) in the restaurant.

This is an excellent base for seeing the local towns and wine villages such as Gigondas and Vacqueyras, and Avignon is only about a 30 minutes easy drive. Orange too is delightful and takes about 20 minutes. Or simply choose a sun lounger or chair in the extensive grounds, lie back and read.

We look forward to another visit.

What a lovely place! Not what we expected as it is a modern (well, 1970s) , purpose built hotel, rather than the chateau we expected, but the setting, rooms (with intoxicating absorbing views from large terraces), restaurant, & charming service make it a GEM of a find. We were already planning a return trip for special occasions etc.,
It is a vineyard setting in our favourite part of the Cotes de Rhone with views of esteemed wine villages, including Gigondas, Vacqueras, Seguret, Sablet etc.,. You could laze, read, stare blankly into the view, sketch....The rooms are comfortable and spacious and it is essential to have a room with a valley view. The hotel is about a 2 mile walk from Rasteau, but lovely walks and trips by car are all within reach. There are also lovely grounds and a pool. The restaurant with panoramic views from terrace was gorgeous. The whole place is family run with care and passion, but not pretentious at all. We would love to return and hope to do so post feria at Arles this September.
