This hotel changed hands in 2013.
It is no longer in the Relais de Silence association.
We have visited this modest hotel many times in the past and, when we arrived for a few days there in September this year, expected to receive the same warm welcome, careful attention to detail and excellent food that we had enjoyed previously. Sadly, this was not the case. The very pleasant Belgian receptionist, whom we knew from previous visits, did indeed welcome us, but when later on we encountered the new owners we discovered they are, surprisingly, quite antagonistic towards their guests.
Immediately after dinner on our first night, our polite request for breakfast in our room the next morning (as had been our habit at this hotel in the past) met with a curt 'non' from Monsieur - and when he was able to drag his eyes from a game he was playing on the computer screen at reception he went on to speak aggressively and at length (in French) about the difficulties he has in staffing the hotel.
He was not at all apologetic about not being able to fulfil our simple request, rather we were made to feel we were asking for something quite unreasonable. He then asked brusquely if we had enjoyed dinner - unfortunately I had not, and told him so, because I had asked for my veal to be pink but it was overcooked and not at all what I had expected.
Also, there is a shortage of vegetables to accompany the main courses on the menu. When, two days later, Madame challenged me about my mild comments to her husband about the way in which the veal had been overcooked, I felt I should ask why there were no vegetables to accompany some main courses and she then instructed me to read her Livre d'Or, the guest book, where she claimed there were many glowing reports from other guests who had loved the food.
All I can say is that when we were at the hotel this year the food was not nearly as good as it had been in the past - the menu was limited, and the desserts looked as if they had been mass produced by an external supplier.
One night when we were there the new owners sat having quite a noisy dinner party with friends or family in a corner of the dining room. I felt very sorry for the two members of staff who were rushed off their feet trying to serve them and everyone else. The previous owners were very attentive to guests and used to help the staff with all tasks, rather than sitting down and expecting to be waited on as if they were guests - as the new owners seemed to be doing.
The general upkeep of the hotel seems to have suffered a bit too under the new owners. There was green algae on the balcony wall facing into our room. Also, I should mention the unpleasant smell that was wafting towards the hotel from time to time. It may have come from the nearby river, but the river bed seemed to be dry when we were there so we wondered if the smell might be emanating from a septic tank.
