“Out of the ordinary!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 September 2013

This was a last minute booking on the way back from Dorset.
It's not quite what you would expect, HOWEVER, we were blown away by the warm welcome, friendliness, and eagerness to please of John and Mary (A charming Chinese couple) who own and run this little gem!!
We stayed ONE night and we had a beautiful room (more like a suite) had four poster bed, huge flat screen TV and blue ray player, bathroom with bath AND very powerful roomy shower. It was delightful and spotlessly clean, warm and welcoming. Not part of the main building, it was a thatched wooden clad building with french doors looking out to the small courtyard. Absolutely charming!!

We ate in the hotel restaurant (which was Chinese obviously), but before that (as my husband is a lover of real ales) we ventured out to the pub/B&B that he had stayed in years before, only to find that it was closed. He was disappointed and accepted he'd make do with a G&T back at the hotel. When we went into the bar, my Husband asked the young man behind the bar if he had ANY real ales, the young man pointed to the casks sitting on the bar!! THREE of them. He was offered a taste of each, after choosing one he liked, he exclaimed that this was IN FACT the best pint of real ale he'd had all weekend!!! Who would have know this would happen!!
The food was excellent, beautifully presented, appetising and hot. I have to say I had the most GORGEOUS toffee apples with vanilla ice cream, absolutely yummy!!
We slept well and had a freshly cooked breakfast (which we had to order the night before). We were allowed plenty of time to check out as nothing was too much trouble for John and Mary. We had a last coffee and went on our way.
We would recommend this hotel to anyone, not least for the owners great sense of humour. He was very funny and made our stay VERY memorable indeed!!
Thank you John and Mary and staff for an enjoyable stay!!

Room Tip: The only criticism would be that the hotel is right on a traffic light junction, if it had been a li...

We were filming nearby and I booked this for the presenter and cameraman and I - what a treat such sweet rooms spotless and cosy and the food served was utterly delicious. Worth going for the food alone ! The owners were so charming and great fun . Would recommend was really fabulous ! And I am fussy!

Room Tip: I loved the ones outside

Didn't stay at the hotel but enjoyed the Chinese food from the Restaurant.
The restaurant was recommend to by the owners of a local hotel in Dorchester.
Didn't disappoint as the food was really tasty and great value with the hosts really welcoming and friendly.
Look forward to returning and would probably book a room at the Plough next time rather than staying local and travelling to and from the restaurant.

Stayed end of march 2013 while visiting family in Abingdon. 10 min drive to town? Nice clean room and four poster double bed with ensuite bath & shower. Bed very comfortable. A very small little pub, had dinner at the restaurant which is Chinese food, my mistake of ordering Indian food, terrible...heard the Chinese food is good. Breakfast is again in the Chinese restaurant, order whatever you like for a English breakfast, was ok, little greasy. Host pleasant and tried please.

Room Tip: Did not see any other room to compare

The overall experience at this Bed and Breakfast was good. On arrival we were shown to our room by the friendly owner, which was across a small courtyard from the actual pub. The room was a good size, with a double four-poster bed and the decor was in keeping with the style of the property, quite rustic and quaint. It was a miserable, winter evening and the room (Room 5) was lovely and warm and had obviously been prepared for our arrival. We ate out as were visiting relatives so i can't comment on the cuisine although it was apparent that this was Chinese food. On our return, we fancied a night cap by the fire in the pub and although it was creeping towards closing time we were welcomed in and chatted with the owner and a local customer.

We had a full english breakfast in the morning (which was on a sunday) this was eaten in the bar of the pub and was delicious - made to order by the owner. There was also cereal and fruit available.

I would recommend staying here, if you are looking for somewhere friendly and fairly rustic (it's not The Ritz remember!). The only slight complaint would be that the mattress was very hard, but i suppose that's personal preference!

We arrived on a wet, dark evening and were concerned that the place was closed. However it was just poorly lit up and we received a warm welcome when we entered the pub. The rooms were a reasonable size and very homely. We enjoyed a lovely Chinese meal in the restaurant and the excellent breakfast was made to order. The hosts were attentive and very entertaining to the point of almost being our cabaret. I would like to return in the summer to get the full benefit of the location.

Room Tip: The best room would be No 4 as this is further from a busy road although the charm of No 5 is worth...

I stayed here on business for one night. When I arrived, I was greeted with lots of smiles. It is a old coaching house which doubles up as a Chinese Restaurant. My room was of a good size and very clean. You could see the footprints of the bed in the carpet where the bed had been moved repeatedly to clean behind - always a good sign. I ate in the bar and had a very tastey Chinese meal and then enjoyed a few glasses of wine and a chat to the owners - lovely people. Would definitely come here again.
