Description: The White Horse is a beautifully restored former Georgian farmhouse in Hurst Green. The place breathes character. Both its bars have a London gentleman's club feel, with their open fire, original flooring and fine oil paintings. An elegant dining room leads to a charming terrace with amazing views across the Sussex weald. On the menu are gastropub-style Modern British dishes such as roasted quail wrapped in pancetta and stuffed with duck liver mousse, with fondant potato, green cabbage and black grape sauce, 15.50. Lunch ranges from homemade soup and bread of the day, 5, to chargrilled rib eye steak, sauteed green beans, frites and blue cheese sauce, 16. Herbs, salads and seasonal vegetables have often come direct from the kitchen garden. Desserts are pretty perfect.

over priced food for very small portions - its a pub that hasn't got the a la carte edge but charges for it. Atmosphere was terrible, we were the only ones in there on a Saturday night although that did mean the service was good! Food however did taste good but was nothing special.
we were really cross though when the bill arrived as the service charge was put on there twice, and £17 in total for service was too much; some of it was removed and then we were happy to tip.

Not sure how to put this with out sounding mean but here we go.

Positives
Very nice and clean decor.
Staff friendly.
Large portions

Negative
Strange music choice for a restaurant
Heating should have been on. It wasn't freezing but it was cold enough that I kept my jacket on and was not tempted to stay for coffee.
Food so, so

They is an old saying "that sometimes less is more" and this was never more true than with the food at the White horse.

I am happy to except that as we were cheap skating it with a Groupon voucher we weren't going to get fine dining. However what we got was basic home cooking.

Starters:
Crispy duck salad with roasted red peppers
An over large pile of chopped peppers, menu claimed they had been roasted but if they had it was by placing them in front of switched off radiator, Some warm bits of duck scrapings and then dark brown source spread over everything. including the bits of salad on the edge of the plate.

Chicken liver and Armagnac pate with chutney and croutes:
A big pink lump with 4 thin slices of (0.5cm) of french bread

Main:
Creamy open wild mushroom ravioli, truffle oil and shaved Parmesan
Thick cream source hiding a selection of mushrooms and some under cooked pasta sheets

Baked fillet of cod with roasted cherry tomatoes and truffle mash
Big lump of mash taking up a third of the plate tasted of truffles but was under seasoned and need more butter or oil to give smooth texture, No tomatoes by 7:30 on a Friday night they had run out. Julienne carrots instead but chopped on the thick side leaving the middles raw, crisp is good but as served with a cooked dish they deserved more than a look at the off radiator. closer to and yes the non roasted roast peppers again. All stuck in a pile with the fish on top.

Dessert:
Not no didn't stay

Coffee:
As dessert

In summary trying hard but failing. Can only think that the Chef was way on Friday night and somebody mum had stepped in.

Basically the whole thing lacked finesse.

This place is a little away from the village and you would have to drive to get there. To be honest save your petrol and get a take away.

Whilst we didn't pay full price, the food served was on the menu and so the review has been based on the normal asking price.

We checked this pub out for a dinner when staying in nearby Robertsbridge. The Ravioli lived up to the recommendations of our Robertsbridge apartment owner. The portions were huge, the veal chops were quite good and the mashed potatoes were really yummy.

The best part of the property is the backyard garden where you can sit and have your beer while the food gets ready. Good friendly service.

Worth checking out if you are in the vicinity . Do let them know that you are coming in if you are big group.

Had a day out and on way home were getting hungry so stopped off here on a Sunday night with our two children.
We were surprised to find a lovely pub with an excellent resturant and great service.

We went recently with friends to check out the special hamburgers - they were very tasty but could have been bigger. Our friends rated the pasta dishes as excellent, but the winners were the puddings especially the sticky toffee and lemon tart. Lovely views unfortunately it was raining otherwise we could have sat in the lovely garden
