“Excellent in every way.”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

How refreshing to find a lovely little pub in the midst of a really beautiful village which serves the most wonderful food. My friend and I made our first visit to this intriguing place which we will certainly return to at every opportunity. Why you may ask ? The answer to that is that the staff were wonderfully normal. There was no pretence, only genuine delight that we had chosen to eat there - a friendly and relaxed atmosphere which was so good. A little gem.

“A lovely end to an exhausting day”
Reviewed 7 May 2014

After a long day walking, this Pub was such a treat. Gin and tonic hit the mark - food was delicious and the portions were just right although the children's portion was probably a little too small for older children.
The staff were all extremely helpful and very friendly and made everything very easy and comfortable which is just what you need after a hard day on the hills.
Gorgeous location and will definitely go out of my way to visit again

“Just fantastic in every way!”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We had climbed Pendle Hill and went into The Assheton Arms with two tired children and a springer spaniel. We were greeted as soon as went through the door and the whole experience was wonderful. All the food was absolutely tip top. Best Fish and Chips I think I have ever had, delicious Goan Prawn curry and really nice well priced wine. Smashing bottles of tonic with the gin too. This is a gem of a pub; just wish I could take it back to London!.

“Wonderful food at a wonderful location”
Reviewed 30 April 2014

Me and Hubby had a great Sunday lunch in this lovely characterful venue. To start, their own hand carved salmon with sourdough toasts and chive creme fraiche, and for hubby, the fishcakes of the day - delicious. Mains I chose the fish of the day which was roasted haddock with deliciously creamy mash flavoured with capers, and hubby went for the quirkily presented Toro pie, comprising slow braised beef and chorizo, manchego cheese and bravas potatoes, completed with a crispy short crust lid, and pastry horns, like Desperate Dan's cow pie. I followed with the yummiest sticky toffee pudding and dreamy toffee sauce. All this accompanied by a great bottle of sauvignon blanc. The staff here are so friendly and knowledgable, it's delightful.

“Follow the signs to awesomeness....”
Reviewed 26 April 2014 via mobile

Driving back to Gisburn having spent the day in Clitheroe, we decided on a whim to "eat out" and not knowing the area, filled the 1st sign we saw, on the A59, directing us toward The Assheton Arms. A couple of miles further on, in the village of Downham, we fell across said establishment, at 5.30pm.
We hadn't booked and were offered a restaurant table until 7 pm, or a bar table to use at our leisure ... We opted for the bar.
Service was very efficient, exceedingly friendly and wonderfully welcoming .... but not a patch on the food. The menu was a delight of choices, added to by a fabulous specials board.
We always try something new when we eat out at a new place ... and were left with no choice but to do so (apart from haddock & chips) from the superb choices on offer. 3 awesome courses and a bottle of Bobal later .... at a very reasonable cost .... we heaved our satiated bellies back to Gisburn and both agreed a good review was most worthy. We will be back ... One day .... and recommend the place to everyone ... you shouldn't be disappointed.
