We were met by possibly the most disinterested receptionist we have ever net- no welcome and even though I told her that I had an elderly woman waiting in a hot car we were told we would have to wait 20 minutes before someone could show us to our ( un signed) appartment. I explained that we would prefer a ground floor as mother-in- law foibd staits difficult-When we did eventually find it it was dark, ditty and damp with paper peeling off the ceiling- when we asked to be moved went through a charade of being directed
to one that was equly dark and Di gy with a hole in the bedroom wall where we had to spend the night as the other ( tiny) one wasn't made up - something the receptionist ( allegedly) knew nothing about. Terrible stay on all levels
Pm 3 floors(!)

first the good bits....the setting of this hotel is stunning ,lawned gardens overlooked by a stylish and spacious conservatory. a walk from here takes you down to the lakeside through woodland and an SSSI abundant with wlidlife . ten out of ten so far !
now the not so good ... Our room(204) rated as "superior" was nothing special and bizarrely had the bathroom in an odd position beside the window thus restricting the wonderful view and blocking the light from the rest of the room. I can only assume that there must have been a reason for this arrangement. As someone else said the general appearance on the upper floors is a little worn but it looks like the place is gradually being redecorated. Food, again nothing special, but very good value I guess.
So overall a disappointing stay. It does seem to appeal more to older people...I would say while we were there most of the other guests were rather elderly which gave the place an odd atmosphere..... sorry to say that, but a range of ages would seem more pleasing.

This hotel, now run by Shearings, is excellent in every respect.
Although we had booked a standard room it was large, comfortable and cosy. Likewise the bathroom. Plenty of space and good facilities with fluffy towels, good toiletries and a plentiful supply tea and coffee. There was a safe, TV and trouser press.
The staff were all friendly and , except for the barman Jose, very efficient. He was friendly enough but seemed short on skills and knowledge.
The grounds were well looked after and had wheelchair friendly paths throughout. You could reach the lake, at a fast pace, in about five minutes. Keswick was exactly one mile away by footpaths. There was plenty of parking.
All the meals were of a high quality with plenty of variety. Breakfasts at the weekend were a little frantic as you had to use the carvery because they are so busy. Normally breakfasts are served at the table.
So top marks to Shearings. A good hotel, good prices and a fantastic location.
We were going to comment that the double bed was too firm but found out, when it was too late, that we could have asked for one, or even two, mattress toppers to make it more comfortable!!

We have stayed in this hotel before and thought the food was well above average but not now. The food was inedible and the staff less than efficient often bringing the wrong dish to the wrong table and if you asked for to have the dish on offer without an item you got that item and not the item you wanted. As far as the quality of the wine on the all inclusive you can definitely get better quality wouldn't have liked to drink it without soda in it. I did complain to Shearings who now own the hotel but the repsonse was really couldn't care less and I have been to other Shearings Hotel and found the food to be acceptable. This hotel is in no way worth the extra they charge despite the lovely setting. Standards have declined dramatically and I certainly would ever return or recommend this hotel to anyone and I have been to many cheaper hotels and had better service and food.
