“Posibly the best B&B I've stayed in”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

I booked a room at the Dalegarth house B&B for my girlfriend's birthday (in April which was a while ago). We had wanted to get away to the Lakes for ages and Keswick/Portinscale is perfect. Contrary to what I'd been told, there is a fair amount to do in Keswick, including pubs, walks, a market and other things too. One thing it was quite limited on was places to eat - don't get me wrong, there are plenty of them, but other than pubs and cafes it is a small town so not many decent restaurants.

The B&B is great, very clean, big enough that you feel like you are on your own and not living under the owners' feet or other guests. The room was lovely, very clean, lots of room and storage and had a great view out the window of the hills. Claire and Craig are great hosts, they greet you with tea/coffee and cakes on arrival and they stay and chat with you for a bit, but not to the point where it's too much - I think they very much know how to make guests feel comfortable quickly.

I would definitely recommend this B&B and also stay there again. I wouldn't even bother looking what else there is in the area because this is perfect and I'd rather give the business to Craig and Claire.

Room Tip: All the rooms look good online although obviously we only stayed in the one - I can't remember t...

Its an impressive looking building with good parking. Owners were very friendly , and tea an cakes were an excellent way to greet us. Our room was big and again, quite impressive. Lots of little thoughtful touches throughout. We had a good nights sleep. Breakfast was again a quality affair, virtually anything you want, but the full English breakfast was tops.
Its in Portinscale with restaurants and a pub , an easy walk. 5 mins drive into Keswick centre. We had stayed in many hotels in the centre, but thought this was better, definitely will go again in the future.

Room Tip: We had a very good room, quite large , groundfloor in the annexe.

We chose this establishment, for a 5 night stay, based on the outstanding Tripadvisor reports and their own web site.

The initial impression made by the award winning garden, the friendly informative welcome (with coffee and cake), plus the continuous provision of fresh milk, the dish of sweets in the room, and high quality toiletries (very strong toilet tissue) was very positive. Our luggage was taken to the room while we enjoyed the coffee and cake.
Clare and Craig, owners of Dalegarth House, turned out to be very capable hosts.

Some information concerning the bedroom is included under room tips below. In common with other parts of the hotel, it was immaculately clean and fully functional.

Breakfasts were outstanding with a buffet which included yogurt and fresh fruit. The main breakfast which was cooked to order and was excellent. Eggs were cooked perfectly, which is so rarely the case in hotels. There was even a daily special - I particularly enjoyed the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon.

The hotel offers dinner and Claire is a very capable cook. The evening meal has to be pre-ordered, by 4 pm, from a continuously changing, surprisingly wide and innovative menu. It is served at 7 pm. We only ate in once as 7 pm is to early for us but must say that it was the most enjoyable dinner of our holiday. Many Keswick restaurants only provide potatoes and salad, Clare provided particularly good fresh vegetables.

We concluded that Portinscale was preferable to Keswick as a place to stay. The hotel has adequate parking, which can be a problem in Keswick.

Many thanks to Craig and Clare - unreservedly recommended

Room Tip: Room 4 was large, bright, quiet and had a superb lake view

Jus had 5 wonderful days in Dalegarth House. Comfortable ground floor room, very clean. Lovely views from the house and very close to Derwent Water. Craig and Claire are wonderful hosts, full of information and nothing is too much trouble. Claire's breakfasts are fantastic, different special every day. Cake always available for guests, just help yourself. Had lovely evening meal too on first night, with four different choices in starter, main course and sweet plus coffee. Would thoroughly recommend Dalegarth House. Lots of parking space. Would definitely stay there again if we return to the Lakes in the future.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms available

Craig and Claire have created a very special guest house at Dalegarth House. Located 15 minutes walk across the fields to Keswick in a small village by Derwent Water with pretty gardens, ample car parking spaces and a quiet location.

The guest house is immaculately kept with large well lit rooms, a big lounge, and a bright breakfast room. The two of us paid £110 night to stay in Room 8 with a double and single bed, large sloping roof windows showing views over the mountains, an enormous flat screen TV, a hair drier, coffee and tea making facilities, bathroom with shower and bath, fresh towels, and (limited) hanging space for clothes in a small in-built wardrobe.

Breakfast was an 'all you can eat' affair with a daily changing 'special'. Packed lunches were available and so was an evening 3 course meal - a bit pricy at £25/head. In fact we ate at the nearby Farmer's Arms pub where two evening meals and a bottle of wine came to just £30!

Craig and Claire make outstanding hosts - ready to advise on suggested trips and tips, helpful and friendly. They obviously work hard to give their guests the best and it certainly shows in their attention to detail: free freshly baked 'goodies' downstairs for you to pick at, a fridge with fresh milk and small jugs to take up to your room, a living room stocked with interesting travel guides and free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Dalegarth house is only 5 minutes walk from the lake itself and I enjoyed swimming from the back of the Derwentwater hotel and from the nearby marina jetties.

Altogether an excellent place to stay!

From their prompt replies to email requests before our visit to their greeting when we arrived to their attention to details, the owners of the Dalegarth, Craig and Clare, provided an outstanding guest house experience. At first, we were a little disappointed that the house was in Portinscale and not Keswick itself, but that turned out to be a good thing. We had easy access to nearby Keswick by both bus and ferry without the busyness of the town and the headaches of parking.

The house and gardens are wonderfully situated overlooking the lake in the little village of Portinscale, and are kept up beautifully. The guest rooms are up-to-date and immaculate. The living and dining areas are very comfortable, with great views. The food is excellent (breakfasts are included). I'd recommend the dinner option, which you can choose up to 10 am each day. The meal was wonderfully prepared and served, although the cost is a bit high.

Craig provided excellent advice for sightseeing in the area, and was very patient and attentive in providing brochures, directions, etc. It is no surprise that most of the other couples we met during our stay were repeat customers. If I had the chance to go back and stay at the Dalegarth House I would do so without hesitation and feel fortunate to get such great accommodations!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the lake.

Spacious rooms, very clean and modern. Brilliant breakfast - wonderful location and views - Clare and Craig work hard to ensure their guests have everything they could possibly need and are the perfect hosts - we got tea and cake on arrival - just what we needed after a long journey. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay here.
