“Better still”
Reviewed 7 October 2012

We have just returned to the Bichonnières after one year's absence and what a change. The auberge has been partly refurbished and gone are some of the sombre rooms we criticised in our previous posting. In their place are large airy rooms with modern facilities and fittings. Fortunately the restaurant has not changed. It still provides the best of Dombes and Burgundian cuisine (we had the top menu at 37 euros) and we ate heartily and royally. The local Bugey wine is still excellent value. We are regular visitors to Burgundy so a detour to Ambérieux will be a regular part of our itinerary as we know that a superb meal is guaranteed.

This was our discovery of 2011. We chose it for two reasons. Firstly it made a convenient stopover on our drive south to Corsica being just a few minutes off the A6 north of Lyon. Secondly, we love Burgundian and Lyonnais cuisine and the hotel's menu on its website promised treats in store.

When we arrived our first impressions though were mixed. The staff were very friendly but the room was extremely basic and outdated. The walls were painted in brown and decorated with faded hunting scenes, the bathroom was only just about OK and the wardrobe was a wooden pole behind a curtain.

However, the restaurant was in a different league altogether. I chose the Dombes menu bringing together dishes created from the produce of the local ponds and marshes. The sautéed frogs' legs were the most succulent that I had ever eaten and the local chicken, on par with the Bresse produce just to the north, was served in the most delicious white wine and cream sauce. My wife chose the Buirgundian menu starting with asparagus soup with pike and then moving on to a magnificent pavé of Charollais beef. We both then enjoyed local cheese and stunning deserts. The cost - 36€ and 25€ respectively plus 14€ for a superb bottle of the local Bugey red.

This place is a little gastronomic gem.

Room Tip: You do not choose to go here because of the bedrooms. This is a destination restaurant!
