The location of this hotel was promising and it didn't fail on that front. Away from the main road with the sweeping green grass all around. You can take your drink to the edge of the race course, and watch the sun go down in the Garden of England. If you have decided to 'upgrade' to a room with a race course view (£25 extra) then it will be all the more peaceful. The constant buzz of the air con units in the car park meant we couldn't leave the door of the room open.
There is nothing wrong with this kind of hotel. Everything works, and is clean and comfortable. However, uniformity is celebrated, surprise and flair discouraged. Charm cannot exist when design is driven by economies of scale and global brand familiarity. That works for some people, but it doesn't work for me.
This was a special occasion for which I was paying and I didn't really want my partner to know how much. The check in clerk slipped me the folded bill discretely which was fine. But then he announced the rate to me out loud well within earshot of everybody. This was very strange behaviour and really rather annoying.
The bar food was an entirely average burger priced at £14 and about the quality of Frankie and Benny's. Not impressed. No effort to embrace any of the bountiful local produce that the Garden of England surely provides. And there was no vending machine for a late night kit kat!
I know it's the height of summer and I booked quite late, but the room was over-priced. I have stayed in better places with more charm for the same or less money. It's not the country club retreat that I feel the website was selling to me.
When we emerged from the other end of the machine, we felt we were breathing oxygen again. I think the fact you can't open any of the windows wide makes the place quite stuffy. The breakfast was a plentiful full english breakfast for which I have no complaints. It's just what you need to set you up for a Sunday. At least it was included in the rate.
Next time I will book earlier and elsewhere to avoid disappointment. Having said all this it could have been worse. Great for corporate golfing conferences or crashing out after a big win and too much prosecco at the races.
