I have knew this place when my 2-days short excursion arranged from Chiang mai to Chiang rai and stayed pleasantly over here. This is a small place with four bungalows only but cozy. We were glad arranged by Eric, our guide and driver during the excursion and thank you for the owner of this place, Paulo and all nice staff. I loved the surroundings and felt so comfort and everything is well-organised and furnished.

A lovely place to stay after a long drive out of the mountains; the grounds are immaculate as was the poolside bungalow that we had. The bed was very comfortable and the shower hot which made a change from some of the other experiences we had staying around Thailand.

The stocked minibar was free with a few beers and sodas, breakfast was excellent although the evening meals were not brilliant; the thai dishes definitely needed some spice as far as we could tell it seemed to be omitted maybe for the European palate who knows!!!!

All the other guests seemed to be of French origin and seemed to be constantly spoken with; the owner being French also. We on the other hand just got the pleasantries and were very often ignored. But this didn't deter us from enjoying our stay.

It is a lovely place, with just a few pleasant bungalows and a nice pool. The big bungalow we stayed in offered a spectacular view.

However our stay was not a pleasant one: no one knew about our reservation when we arrived. We were offered another bungalow at a higher rate for only 1 night, although we had booked for 2 nights. The higher rate was initially not even compensated, although they confirmed that they had made the mistake. I had to insist on the rate we had booked and only after we promised not to use all the beds in the bungalow (!) the lady reluctantly agreed on the lower price.
We agreed to it, because it was end of day and we had been traveling all day.

Next morning the owners were around at breakfast time, they spoke to all the guests. We, however, were completely ignored. They knew about the issue, but did not talk to us at all.

Mistakes happen, i know, but how you deal with it makes the difference.
If they would have simple offered us the bungalow at the lower price straight away without any discussion or ridiculous promises we would not have felt so unwelcome.
Ignoring us at breakfast did not make it any better.

We usually tend towards budget places but after a long bus journey we deserved a treat and splashed out. Old Tree is a lovely place to recharge the batteries: great view, 2 pools and huge, luxurious bungalows. The free minibar had beers, water and fizzy drinks.

Paolo, an old chain-smoking french guy, is a real character who will chat away on any subject you like. He has a collection of DVDs - plenty in French - to borrow too. In the morning he gave us a lift to the boat.

Breakfast is served on a raised deck with views onto the river and the surrounding hills. The only negative was that the short walk into town for dinner was in total darkness and lots of barking dogs line the road. Take a torch!

In addition to the many positive comments already made about Old Tree's House, I want to emphasize what a wonderful host Paolo is. He is not a typical guesthouse owner. Nid was not feeling well at the time we were there, Paolo was completing the exterior of an additional bungalow, his daughter needed to be hospitalized one night, and we arrived in the low season without having made reservations. Nevertheless, we were welcomed heartily, and Paolo remained in good humor and ready to help (without ever being intrusive) throughout our stay. His motto, in fact, seems to be helping others first, profit a distant second. He's a generous person who sponsors the education of a variety of young people, and who isn't interested in earning every last penny from guests, but rather making them feel welcome and able to enjoy their holiday. Pon, the delightfully friendly and helpful assistant prepares breakfasts, ensures the rooms are cleaned daily, and helps guests as needed. She's a real asset to the experience of staying at the Old Tree. Clearly, many others have enjoyed it as much as we did. Clean and comfortable rooms, a delightful pool, good breakfasts, and all the extras designed to make guests comfortable and at home are important - but an owner like Paolo is what really makes this place stand out.

When you arrive you are greeted by the passionate owner and most helpful host I have come across. The poolside bungalows we stayed were very comfortable with free mini bar and pool at the porch . The views of the area were stunning with Buddha statues and temples visible from the hillside. Paulo also took us on a tour of the local temples ,villages and a school he helped build and fund at no cost. The following day we hired his friend Lek ,a registered tour operator for an awesome all day tour into the golden triangle where we visited Laos and Myanmar and other things other visitors who only go to the tourist spots miss .To stay here is a must and the best time our family has had on our many visits to Thailand. All in all cultural and friendly .

Room Tip: Choose poolside bungalows and tour area as much as possible

We spent 4 days in this beautiful b&b and enjoyed every moment. The room at the pool was great. The very knowledgable owner, Frenchman 'Polo', made us feel at home. He took us on a trip to the 'golden triangle' and also showed us the project that he runs for a local hilltribe. He also organised a guide who took us on a memorable one-day hike through the rice fields and the hills of the region. This is how a hotel should be run. Trip back to Chiang Rai by boat was great.
