“Beautiful surroundings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2010

Only stayed 1 night and we felt it was a beautiful location, very remote, and a great experience getting there.

The resort is stunning with a decent size pool and a restaurant/bar on site, along with Spa facilities. The restaurant serves thai food with european options but it is quite limited and expensive in comparison to other restaurants.

The room was great, we booked a superior room, which meant we had a river view but that was actually restricted by the bushes in front. It was large with air con, fridge and a nice bathroom. The lighting was a little low and the location of the bathroom light switch was somewhat awkward.

The resort is simply too isolated to be a one night stay. Someone would need at least 3 days to benefit from the peace and tranquility. However, a longer stay would involve a lot of travelling to get around to see the sites and restricted by the lack of facilities.

We would return as we did enjoy the visit but we had our own driver and would reccomend that anyone else staying here do something similar.

Yes it is a fantastic setting. Yes it could be tranquil. But tour groups every hour on the hour traipsing around the grounds, using the pool facilities, and generally spoiling the jungle atmosphere were not appreciated. The food is good. When not attending to the influx of temporary guests the staff were attentive.... but when you come on a getaway that is supposed to be remote and tranquil the last thuing that you want are bunches of gawping day trippers.

Recently I visited Kanchanaburi as a photographic trip and spent 3 nights at the River Kwai Resotel. We got a villa with attached jacuzzi facility.

Overall, the service from hotel staff is good, and the food is reasonably priced and authentic. For accessibility, as you'd need to take a longboat from the pier to the resort, it may pose as an inconvenient option. However, this provides an excellent venue to really get away from it all. Furthermore, it is within walking distance to the Lawa Cave, which is one of the attractions.

One minus point was the condition of the jacuzzi. The water is slightly brown and quite frankly, icky. We requested for a daily change of water but it's about the same quality.

Overall, the Resotel is a good hideaway with reasonable pricing and amenities. If a total hideaway is what you're looking for, then look no further!

This hotel can only be accessed by a longboat, so thinking carefully about how much luggage is actually needed is advisable, although this was handled by the hotel staff and taken directly to our rooms. A very remote place, so no shops!

On arrival we were greeted with the customary drink and then led to our rooms which were two halves of a cabin, decked out in bamboo and other natural materials. Very pleasant and refreshing to look at.
Our son who has the same name as us and is only 15, was given a room quite a way from ours, and this happened with other guests, so I do think they could try harder with placing groups of guests next to each other. This took a while to rectify.

Breakfast and dinner (about £8.00 for set menu) were OK.
Had a pleasant foot massage which was about £4.00 for 45 minutes.
No problems with insects in the rooms and apart from a precautionary spray of repellent little other protection was felt necessary.

The pool was in a beautiful setting and staff supplied reuested drinks and reasonable prices.

Free internet was available for those with their own laptop.

A short walk away leads to a underground cavern where a guided tour is available - this was about £4.00 for 45 minutes.

And, that's what it was. But, I wouldn't call it small. It was large, but you had the feeling of being remote, private, and extremely quite. Drove from Bangkok (3 hours), long tail boat down the beautiful river gorge, and arrived at the dock where we were help to our rooms. Everyone at the hotel was great - service was excellent. Since there is no other place else to eat, it was good food, simple, and resonable. The rooms varied in size and configuration. Ours was a stand alone bungalow and it was comfortable, simple, and clean. The best part was the wonderful balcony - great to sit out and read. Highly recommend the Lava cave tour and the trip to the Mon Tribe. IT was a great place to relax and re-energize. The only down side to me - to pool could have been cleaner. Also, if you don't plan to spend a couple of nights at least, not quite worth it - long way to go.

We had a delightful time in this resort in a park-like setting. The grounds are rustic and beautiful. The food was good and tasty. Everything was clean and reasonably maintained (for Thailand.) it's a very nice place overall.

While it is located on the river, the rooms really don't overlook the river.

The beds were surprisingly comfortable. They were firm but yielding. I have a temperpedic bed at home and the feel was quite comparable, actually.

The bungalows are air conditioned and comfortable.

You MUST bring DEET bug spray. The bugs int he woods WILL eat you alive. However, with DEET they are not much of a problem. DEET worked well.

I did come into contact with POISON OAK on the hillside. So beware if you are allergic. To be honest, it was well off the path, we were climbing down the hill to the river. So most guests will not have this problem.

The staff was polite and willing to serve.

There are no closely stores so bring anything you may need such as munchies and extra bottles of water. (The hotel charges 30 Baht per bottle.)

There are no safes in the rooms, but you can lock the individual rooms with decent security.

We had a jacuzzi suite and it was cool and refreshing. But note that the water is not heated and while it looks icky, they do change it daily and it is fresh river water and just fine.

You can rent bikes and we enjoyed biking along the road which had nearly no traffic.

Note that there is free WiFi and that phone service is not available in the rooms but is available at the central clubhouse.

We arrive by boat on a tour from Bangkok only staying for one night. The boat ride was a wonderful suprise as we wen't too sure what to expect. There was a slight change to our itenery because of the lack of tourists due to the troubles here. So glad we still came though. Food very fresh and plenty of it. Staff very frindly & helpful. Great experience, rooms air conditioned, bathroom basic but clean, bed okay but not great. The place was clean and the little geeko's very friendly. Shame that there was hardly any one there however it was very peaceful. Only complaint that we weere not told there were no eftpos facilities, fortunatley we had money to cover drinks and tips, but some other tourists there has no cash and had to return to Kanchanaburi to find an ATM
