“SEE THE SEALS - AND A PENGUIN IF YOU'RE VERY LUCKY”

Shag Point Nature Reserve
Reviewed 9 March 2014

Shag Point is a great place for viewing basking seals. Access from the coastal SH1 is past some holiday homes and then on an unmetalled track. There are a number of viewing points at this remote headland. We saw a single yellow-eyed penguin when we visited in the middle of the day. He looked rather sad: perhaps he'd been left behind when others went on a fishing trip. Toilet facilities are basic. (The famous Moeraki Boulders are a few kms further north).
