“Expensive 'fale' accommodation that was 'back-packer' quality”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2011

After travelling throughout the Pacific, most recently on both islands of Samoa and New Zealand, we found Stevenson's on Savaii the most over-priced and over-rated of all the accommodation we'd stayed in. Taken in by the beach setting on which the fales are built and wrongly assuming that we had been quoted a rate for a 'double' as requested, we thought we'd give the 'fale' experience a try. We realise a 'fale' is a Samoan style hut with woven shutters instead of walls, but if they are going to charge the same as the air-conditioned cabins with verandah just down the road, they need to improve their standards! A bed, the only furniture, was thin and uncomfortable, made up with old, pilled sheets and draped by a too small mosquito net with holes. A fan above the bed had bare wires which was surely a safety, if not fire hazard. The ensuite consisted of a shower, toilet, sink, safe and fridge. The shower spout was a broken pipe protruding from the rock wall, the sink tap was wedged in by two bits of wood and neither the fridge or safe worked. Breakfast was a small portion of fruit, an egg, toast and coffee served while flea-ridden cats hung around waiting for scraps. We wondered whether lunch and dinner were meant to have been included in the rate, but it was never mentioned. If the owners get their act together and make the fales as 'luxurious' as they're supposed to be, perhaps they'd have full occupancy. Until that happens we recommend you steer clear!

Room Tip: Demand decent accomodation or negotiate the rate.

Stevenson's was a pleasure to stay at. Right in the heart of the village, wrapped in beautifully manicured gardens and extremely comfortable. All of the rooms are set upon the beachfront making for stunning sunrise/sunset views and villas are decorated in a traditional samoan style - ensuring the infusion of culture missing from some high end hotels. The outdoor shower is fantastic - high surrounding volcanic stone walls mean that you can have privacy and union with nature at once! The fales are open but have lockable bathrooms to store valuables and are just beautiful - undoubtedly the most luxurious of any fale in samoa. The restaurant and bar area is lovely - and the staff wonderfully attentive - Tusi took great care of me and my friend - from the welcome coconuts to helping us with our travel arrangements. It is very near to the green-turtles and some lovely local churches (an experience in the heat!) and buses are regular and easy to catch. My one criticism would be the lack of a pool. The beach is gorgeous but not amazing for swimming - when it is low tide it's essentially impossible to swim, my friend and I were forced to seek out the use of another hotel's pool one very hot day. Great place but the lack of a pool/always swimable beach means I wouldn't stay there for an entire 2 week holiday.

We stayed in one of the beach front villas. We were very impressed by the size of the room, the size of the bathroom, the outside shower (as well as the inside shower) and the air-con. All of this in addition to being a couple of paces away from the water. Highly recommend taking a trip to swim with the turtles. A very enjoyable weekend on Savai'i

We stayed in one of the beach villas in December, so it was slow season and rainy. But we were prepared for that and really loved it. The villa was very spacious, well equipped and nicely decorated in local materials. Most importantly, it was a stone's throw to a beautiful beach with pretty good snorkeling (lots of live coral and small to medium sized fish, a few eels, etc). The outdoor showers were fun, too. Food in the restaurant was very good. All the staff were friendly and helpful. You don't go to Samoa expecting five star resorts, and this is certainly not one. But it was just what we hoped for.

We stayed at Stevensons in Manase (Savaii) in the beach villas for 3 days in late November. Initially we thought that the villa fale accommodation was a little shabby and the food mediocre, but after seeing other accommodation at Manase, realised Stevensons was in fact the pick of the bunch. We were going to stay at Tanus beach fales (next door) but found Stevensons to be more to our requirements, so booked back in and stayed in the open beach fales for a further 3 days.
Each night entertainment was provided; singing, dancing, fire performance and local village choir.
All meals are included with the accommodation. We found them to be a bit hit and miss (especially for vegetarians). Some meals such as the fresh fish n chips and beef curry were great. The fresh fruit; pawpaw and coconut was lovely, but the pasta and soup poor.

I would recommend Stevenson’s, but don’t expect gourmet food and a pristine resort. Like most tropical countries there are swarms of cockroaches and mosquitoes. The open fales have lizards and geckos, but that adds to the flavour.

The water in the taps was sticky, so I expect it may be UV treated or salinated?

The snorkelling was good, but some of the coral was dead and limited to branching coral.

Overall the staff were friendly and polite and the service good.

Be careful with ferries from Uplou to Savaii, they don’t always run when they say they are.

If your looking for a true samoan experience the place to stay is stevensons at manase. The beaches were absolutely stunning by the stevensons fales, your not far from the villages and the complementary breakfast lunch and dinners were soooo good there were even performances at night dining. They have tour guides available to take you around the island if you happen to leave everything to the last minute. The workers are very friendly and help you out no matter what goes wrong as we should know.... had our own little hick ups with our visa.... stevensons were so helpful. especially be good to a lady called Mel from the bar she was awsome. We will definitly be back and will be taking people with us.

I'd definitely recommend a stay at Stevenson's in Manase if you're heading to Samoa. Take one of the simple beach fales unless you're desperate for extra comforts - they are right on the beach and the sunsets here are just divine!

The restaurant and bar is solid, with plenty of local entertainment nightly, reasonable food and decently priced drinks. By Samoan standards it is all a bit over-developed, but it depends what you're looking for. Hardcore backpackers will prefer less touristy places than Manase, but if you like a bit of everything then this is the place for you. Loved it and will definitely be back.
