Great host and hostess. Wonderful room overlooking the fjord. great view of the waterfall across the fjord. Could hear it. Room was spotless. Owners took great care in the maintenance of the facility. Breakfast was fantastic. Would stay again with no hesitation.

Spent 3 nights (2 full days) here & wished we'd had several more. The place itself is beautifully situated on a fjord with unusual green water, a view of a large waterfall, and tinkling bells from local sheep. If it hadn't been cool or rainy, we'd have loved to sit out on the lawn with comfortable outdoor furniture. There's a view of an old, illuminated church as well as the fjord.

The owner gave us patient & helpful guidance in choosing local hikes to our specs. (He seemed able to respond to diverse needs: We saw him outfitting one couple with hiking boots as well as dropping them off at their hiking destination. Other guests were experienced mountain climbers.) We chose 2 hikes of 3-4 hours roundtrip within 20 minutes of Nes Gard, and were awestruck by the beauty. One day was stunning sunshine, the second was a foggy day that produced unusual scenes of great beauty.

In terms of meals: 1/2 board with dinner at Nes Gard is an incredibly good deal in an otherwise outrageously expensive country, and the dinners are simply prepared but hearty & tasty. We also dined at a more upscale local restaurant recommended by our host, and were favorably impressed. Not just the hosts but the waitstaff at Nes Gard are gentle and attentive without being invasive.

About our rooms: we had 211, which was small but had fantastic views, as did our traveling companion in 210. Because we had to change the dates of our stay by one day, we were not able to get the room that we had intended, and ended up in a more affordable but small attic room with extremely low eaves. (btw, the shower was great!) we recommend a room downstairs (#10?) (our original choice), with french doors to a small deck. The main house, dating to 1850, is lovely, but could be noisy -- we were in a separate building, which was fabulously quiet. Also available were two living rooms with terrific views, a nice fireplace, and elegant picture books related to norway and the fjords.

All in all, a place that grew on us as we enjoyed good hospitality and beauty.

Stayed three nights. We booked a room with small kitchen and terrace and we had a beautiful view of the waterfall. The room was very clean, with lots of light and tasteful furniture. The kitchen is compact but it allowed us to warm up some dishes and have a nice meal sitting in the terrace or at the small table in the room. There is a supermarket and liquor store in a nearby town which had everything you would need for a simple meal. But if you do not want to eat in the room, you can always have dinner at the restaurant in the hotel. We had dinner one night and it was good. Only problem with having dinner in the restaurant is that when it is full with guests and locals (the restaurant is used by the locals for celebrations) it feels a bit crowded as it is not very spacious. Breakfast is abundant and tasty and provided a good start for a full day of walking or sightseeing but again if everybody decides to eat at the same time, the communal tables get crowded. We wished the dinning room to be a bit more spacious, this is why we decided to have dinner in the room, enjoying the quiet and the waterfall view. Also the staff is very helpful and will arrange activities for guests. Another good thing is that you can order lunch and prepare it by yourself from the food available for breakfast. We had very yummy sandwiches!

Room Tip: Select the room with a small terrace, kitchen overlooking the watefrall

After a long boat ride and drive from chilly, damp Bergen, we arrived at Nes Gard in mid-afternoon just as the clouds parted to reveal the astonishing view across the serene, blue-green Lustrafjord. Mari greeted us with fresh-squeezed apple juice from the property's own orchard. We stayed three nights and wished we could have stayed a week. The inn was immaculate and charmingly decorated, and our little two-room suite (with excellent wi-fi) had its own geranium-bedecked porch overlooking the fjord. The food was excellent at both breakfast and dinner, and Asbjorn was very helpful in showing us where to hike. One of the days we were there, he arranged for us to join a jolly group of British hikers that he led on an all-day trek among the glaciers and waterfalls in Jotunheimen park. The surrounding countryside is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Face it, it was a fairytale.

Borton Overseas, a Minneapolis travel agency, set up our stay and also runs week-long tours that include several days of hiking based at Nes Gard. We highly recommend their services.

As we drove up the driveway of the Nes Gard, Mari was already coming towards with a friendly smile to greet us. This type of anticipation and caring service was a sign of things to come. My wife and I spent a week in the fjords but only one night at Nes Gard. I wish we had spent more evenings there. Our room was on the corner of the detached house, overlooking the sheep and their lambs on one side and the spectacular view facing the old church, fjord and waterfall on the other. Given the 24 hour sun in June, we were able to enjoy these views every second of the stay. I cannot overstate the view here. We couldn't take our eyes off the view. The waterfall was mesmerizing. It changed every second and drew you in. Whether we were in the garden seated with a glass of wine or in our room looking out the window it was the best of our week.
Mari and Asbjorn had just enjoyed their daughter's wedding the weekend that we arrived but they still had the energy to devote their attention to us and ensure our stay was special. Our dinner was in the living area with a fire in the background. We enjoyed local venison with perfectly prepared fresh vegetables and wedding cake for dessert. In the morning, breakfast was the most ample of all our stays and we packed a good lunch before heading out.
Even though we had checked out, Asbjorn still loaned us rain gear as we were heading for the glacier that day and the weather was wet. His generosity exceeded our expectations and that of anyone else we encountered on our trip. We stayed in some pricier hotels (who market themselves better than Nes Gard) during our stay but Nes Gard was our favorite stop.
Do yourself the favor and book here, stay here and enjoy!
