On recommendations from many friends we went with our two children to Los Cardones to spend a day on the beach. We used only restaurant so I cannot comment on the accommodation.

The restaurant and surroundings are very nice, clean and well kept. The beach is beautiful. The only downside of our stay was the service in the restaurant. Although there were almost no people in the restaurant, we had to wait 25 minutes to get drinks which we had ordered, not speaking about the food....and moreover the servant messed up our order and forgot about the meal for our son.

We will probably not come back as we know better beaches but the place can be pleasant for those who are afraid to stay on public beaches in Nicaragua.

This was our first time to central America. As Australians we are much more used to travelling around Australia/USA/Canada/Europe/SE Asia. I have to say when our car first pulled up I was a little apprehensive. It seemed so remote and the waves weren't that great with a solid onshore blowing. Within half an hour of settling into our room we were releasing baby turtles into the ocean and I had a feeling this place was special.

The following 7 days was one of the best weeks I have had in my life. The people were amazing, the waves were always fun and it really was a great experience. I would thoroughly recommend this place to anybody who wants to surf, although beginners to intermediate probably get the most out of it. There is a break down the road which is world class but doesn't always work. If you don't surf then think twice, its an amazing place to surf intermittently through the day and relax between sessions but I think some might get a little bored if they weren't surfing. It literally is in the middle of nowhere.

We have already recommended this place to dozens of people on subsequent travels and highly recommend you check it out.

Room tip: Get the cabins with a view, we had two nights in one and it was amazing.

My husband and I spent 2 amazing weeks at Los Cardones Surf Lodge. The surf was amazing (every day!), the staff (both Spanish and English speaking) were phenomenal, the food was absolutely delicious and the friends that we made there helped create very special memories in our hearts. We were even lucky enough to be a part of a sea turtle hatching and got to assist in releasing those beauties into the magnificent ocean. What an experience!! I am so thankful that we spent our time in Nicaragua with Los Cardones and I hope to get back there soon for some more amazing adventures!

Room tip: The stilted bungalows received a bit more of a breeze in the evening, which made sleeping a bit more comfortable than in the non-stilted cabanas... but both options are lovely.

My best friend and I just spent three nights and three days at Los Cardones and were sad to leave. The staff (everyone from the owners to the managers to the Nica wait staff, cooks, and massage therapists) were incredibly attentive and wonderfully kind. The food was delicious - there was a lot, so ask for smaller portions if you no tengo hambre and be sure to try the calala tart, wow! The beach was ours. The surf perfect for beginners to intermediates. Morning yoga lovely. The bungalows were simple and thoughtfully designed. (Pay more for the stilted bungalows if you can as they get more of a much-needed breeze) The no electricity thing never seemed to bother anyone and is a credit to the environmentally friendly approach the owners have taken with all aspects of the lodge. I want to go back and share this experience with other friends and family.

Room tip: If you can afford to pay more for the Stilted Bungalows, do it. They are lifted off the ground and closer to the beach, which allows for a better breeze, which is important when it is so hot.

The beach break directly in front of the lodge works for a couple of hours either side of high tide. Great surf. The lodge is simple. No electricity, drop toilets but beautifully done, lots of cabanas each with it's own shade, lounge chairs and hamocks. Suitable for kids. Local staff are friendly and, great and paid well. All sorts of tours and activities and the lodge doesn't charge a commision ensuring the local community benefits from your stay. They also run a turtle rescue program collecting eggs that would otherwise end up in the markets in Managua, incubating them and releasing the young. They also run a mobile library for the local schools.

Room tip: Cabanas on stilts are cooler and have their own toilets.
