First things first: The location on the beach is extremely beautiful and it might be hard to find a calmer place in Nicaragua. Crabs, birds, iguanas and turtles make this a real nature experience and it's a great place to relax.

But: The price they charge is very, very confident. Almost 200 USD per night include all meals (they are tasty, but the choice is very limited) but don't make up for what you get. The bungalows are tasteful but basic, the toilets don't have a flush and there is no electricity at all. Since there are not even candles, we dined in the dark or with our own flashlights.

It's a good place to get away from it all - stress, noise, people, but also comfort.

I recently spent a few days at the surf lodge in a stilted ocean front bunkalow........had a great time surfing, hanging in my hammock, and enjoying conversations with the interesting and attentive staff. The property is the result of much love and the passion of the owners......very thoughtfully layed out, off the grid, and very low impact. The yoga pavallion is Awesome, they have a great selection of rental surfboards, and the meals were excellent. Do go!

Room Tip: Get a stilted ocean front cabin...if you can!

We traveled all over Nicaragua, and Los Cardones Surf Lodge was hands down the most authentic beach experience we had. We were able to stay two nights in February of 2014. Our first morning we were awoken by staff letting us know that baby Sea Turtle's from the lodges hatchery had just hatched. My girlfriend and I raced down to beach to witness it. Throughout the day we were able to take in the views and enjoy the relaxing dining cabanas along the beach. Our last day we went on a 2 hour horseback ride on the beach, definitely a great time worth doing.

The lodge is at the end of a 15KM bumpy dirt road, that is very remote. We spent many minutes wondering if we were lost. At the end of this ride was a rustic group of buildings bordering the Pacific.

We stayed in the Buho (Owl) hut. We tried to get one of the stilt houses and just missed out, which was a not great. The hut was large, which was great for a family of four. However, unlike the very large windows on the stilt houses, our place only had two very small windows that let in little light, so it was dark in the daytime and pitch in the evenings. With it's brink construction, it felt like sleeping in a brink oven (so now I know what a pizza feels like). However, we did bring small battery operated fans, which made the heat tolerable. If you stay here, bring the fans, they are about $5 on Amazon and the battery lasted all four nights.

The beds were short and more like very thick foam pads instead of a mattress. My feet were hanging over the edge, and of the entire 6 weeks we spent in Nica, this was the only bed that was uncomfortable and by the end my shoulders and back were sore.

Finally on the gripes, it was definitely expensive. Given the price, I thought they would have included the surf board rentals or at least the boggie boards rentals. They were not included and then they were the most expensive rentals were found in the country.

Now the good stuff. The beach was amazing! It was long and uncrowded (less than a few people during the weekdays), full of AWESOME shells. The water was warm and the waves were great for beginners. The time we were there, it was about 1 - 3 feet over a sand bottom, so perfect for kids and old parents who have not surfed in a long time. The palapas had a great view of the beach and were excellent for hammock sitting and Tona drinking. We all liked the meals and the staff was super friendly.

The days at the beach were great and the nights in the hut were tough.

Room Tip: The owl hut is SUPER hot......like a brink oven......

Calling this place an eco-lodge is like calling a refugee slum an eco-village. Just cos there's no services doesn't make it eco.
No power, no wifi, no plumbing (ie no flushing toilets).
Budget brick huts (By Nicaraguan standards), poorly designed with no air flow, no private toilet and tiny windows with no views.
The public toilets are placed near the huts so the smell of the neighbours composting faeces wafts into the hut all night long.
We could not sleep for 3 nights straight because of the stifling heat.
We are from Australia and used to the heat, but the huts here are almost brick ovens, the windows are tiny trapping the heat in all day, and with no power for fans, it is like a sauna inside.
Not to mention the beds were 5 foot 9 (I'm 6 foot) my ankles hung over the edge and the pillows and sheets were cheap and the room cleaned only every 3 days.
and at a $170 per night for a couple inc taxes, its one of the more expensive places in Nicaragua.
Food is included but it was the worst we had in Nica (We eat fish, and it tasted bad and old).
Its a rip off, and literally the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in.
We stayed at Beuna Vista Surf Club Eco Lodge at Playa Maderas Nicaragua before coming here, and it was excellent. Great meals included, architecturally well designed wood huts with great air flow and beach views, solar powering, private bathrooms connected to rain tanks, locally made organic soaps-you know- stuff that REAL eco lodges have. Oh, and all for 130 per night.
Plus they want $25 a day for surf board rental for the same average boards you get everywhere else in Nica for $7 - $10 a day.
If they charged $70 per couple per night total, I'd consider giving this place a rating of average.

We had a fabulous stay at Los Cardones and appreciate all of you have done to make it an enjoyable experience that also benefits the environment and surrounding communities. We found the cabanas to be clean and comfortable, we loved all of the meals, and were pleased with the massages and the selection of books available. The one disappointment we had was the cost of surfboard rental which we felt was a bit high. However, in all, our stay was fantastic and we hope to return in the future!
