“Got engaged here!”
Reviewed 14 July 2014

Actually stopped here in 2012 prior to the refurbishment but being new to TripAdvisor I felt it necessary to leave a review for this hotel as we had such a lovely time.

We had booked a two night stay as part of a Groupon deal and had some reservations due to mixed reviews... however upon arrival we loved every minute of it.
The hotel is out in the sticks and we found it a bit tricky to find, however we persisted and were soon pulling up the long drive to the hotel. The hotel has quite a 'grand' feel to it and beautiful grounds. Going through the large entrance we were welcomed with a blazing fire (our visit was in February) and comfy armchairs... it felt like walking in to a country estate.

We were quickly welcomed by a lovely member of staff who checked us in and personally showed us to our room (with it being an old building it was a little bit of a maze). Our room was one of the family suites (Priest Weston) and was lovely... nice big space with a double bed, sofa, coffee table, wardrobe and TV. The long windows filled the room with light and had a stunning view...stunning! We loved waking up and watching the sheep grazing in the field... it was very cosy sat with a cup of tea (and so quiet!).

The food was very nice but a bit expensive, and with it being out in the country we had limited options to go elsewhere and this is the reason they did not score 5 stars... however all the staff were lovely and very helpful through our whole stay.

The area is lovely for walking... there is a caravan park/campsite near by but during our visit it did not effect our stay at all.

To top it all off my partner proposed here so it was a truly magical stay.

Would I visit again - Definitely... especially now the rooms have been redecorated as it looks wonderful.

On Saturday 5th July myself and four of my family arrived for afternoon tea. firstly we had a small table that was for four. My mother who is in a wheelchair was stuck at the end of the table. I should add here that we were the only party at that time in the dining room. Sandwiches were fresh but some had the crusts on and some did not. we had to ask for milk for our tea and also jam and cream for the scones, The small cakes were really delicious. But what really took the biscuit was being charged £10 for a second pot of tea. I live in Dublin and have gone out many times for afternoon tea and have never been charged for a second pot. The setting is lovely and with some thought could turn an afternoon tea into something special.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment. You booking had been made for 4 persons & not 5. Having realised there was 5 of you on your arrival we quickly rearranged your table into a table of 5 for you. As you mention above one of your party was a wheelchair user. Had we been made aware of this on booking we could have ensured when organsing our table plan that morning there was ample room around your table. Although you were on your own in the dining room during your afternoon tea we had only moments before your arrival had a party of 15 (plus other smaller parties earlier on) move out of the dining room to enjoy the sunshine on our patio so all tables had been in use. We would never dream of seating guests on a previously used table & with the need to make your mother comfortable as quickly as possible had no other choice but to add another setting to the table we had reserved for you.
Having reviewed your bill the extra pot of tea was charged at £5.00, not the £10.00 mentioned above. When we have offers on our afternoon tea we do charge £1.00 for refills & dont feel this is an astosinate amount when would would pay much more that £9.50 per person for afternoon tea at other places.
With the beautiful weather we have been receiving recently we don't put milk jugs out on tables until we have served customers, like wise with the fresh cream. We brought these out to you following the service of your tea, sandwiches & cakes but apologize if you felt these were delayed.
We pride ourselves on our flexibility & will also do our utmost to ensure our customers are happy. Having been made aware on serving you & your party your afternoon tea that one member of the group did not eat bread we made up a ham salad as an alternative & would have done out utmost to resolve any other dissatisfaction you had if you had made us aware on the day.
We hope this visit will not deter you from visiting us again in the future. Please let us know of any requirements on booking so as we can be fully prepared for your visit.

Camped at the Mellington Hall Caravan Park, which is behind the hotel and went up to the hotel for dinner. Despite arriving looks rather worse for wear, the staff were welcome and didn't bat an eye as a rather bedraggled walker ensconced herself in the bar for the evening. The meal of mushroom stroganoff was delicious and the apple rhubard crumble was mouthwateringly delicious. The Shiraz was also a well chosen house wine. It was a treat to eat a satisfying, tasty meal in such a nice atmosphere.

After a one night stay at your hotel booked direct with the hotel but a Travel Zoo deal, both my husband and I, who are both recovering from serious illnesses wanted a luxury country break. Firstly we were very upset at the size and the state of the Superior Double Room which was anything but. The television needed to be switched on using a chair to reach it and the sky box was only accessible when we were on our hands and knees aiming the remote under the dressing table. Instructions provided were totally useless. The bed linen was clean but the bed itself was very uncomfortable. There was a lack of luxury items (in the bathroom; dressing gowns, slippers, shampoo etc) and the tea and coffee facilities were very basic.

Later that evening, I asked for Salmon with mussels and was served Salmon with leek sauce. I asked for some mussels and was served 2 mussels on a side plate 10 mins later. My husband asked for a black coffee instead of a dessert and was promptly refused as it wasn't part of the deal! The following morning we were shown into the bar area where there had been a table set just for us for breakfast. (Food was good) When we asked why we couldn't eat in the dining room with the rest of the guests, we were told the tables were reserved even though they were empty and only one had a reserved sign on.

We were thinking of staying a couple of nights but after the first night we cut our stay short and came home to enjoy a comfortable nights sleep.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on trip-advisor. It is a shame that you were unable to take the time to discuss your dissatisfaction in an orderly manner during your stay with us, rather than the route you chose which was a be little & humiliate staff, disrupt our restaurant & cause such an atmosphere for other guests.
Our tvs are situated on the walls of our superior doubles but only need the remote control to switch them on & off so we are unsure why you needed to use a chair in this instance. With the tv attached to a wall bracket our sky boxes are then on a unit lower down for health & safety reasons. If we have them on the wall at the higher height I'm sure we would be having constant casualties which people banging their head. Again the skyboxes (unless in the event of a power cut in which case a member of staff would come and reset the box for you) do not need to be accessible, only in vision of the remote.
We're sorry you felt our mattress was uncomfortable but as you can see from many of our previous reviews we normally have nothing but praise for the high quality comfort mattresses we have in the hotel but on the other hand understand that not every mattress is suited to everyones needs. All our rooms to equipped with dressing gowns, shampoo & shower gel
Our hospitality trays consist to a cafertier of freshly ground coffee & a selection of traditional teas as-well as herbal/fruit teas. If you customers feel there is something that can be added to this we are open to ideas & ask they put there their suggestions to us rather than criticize but not give further details. Had you made us aware you were unhappy with your allocated room earlier in the day when you checked in we may have been able to juggle bookings to offer you an alternative choice but when you only mentioned it at 7pm, 4 hours after checking in, we were unable to do this.
We are sincerely sorry that the mussels were missed from your main course & as soon as this mistake was realized were brought to you. Without wanting to make excuses by the time we were serving your main course you had caused such a stir in the restaurant that order of service had been thrown of track in a bid to keep your disruption away from other diners. The offer you were staying on (I must point out at this point was SIMILAR but not identical to a travel-zoo offer we had running) included 3 course meal of starter, main & dessert. We are sorry that you felt that offers which have been clearly stated on booking should be altered and changed to suit your requirements but an offer is an offer & while coffee is and always has been available this will be at an additional cost whether you choose to take all that is in the offer or not. As a suggestion before booking another offer you may want to consider that a bed & breakfast rate is better suited to you rather than having something included that you clearly didn't want this time.
We had tried to keep that reason for the fact that you were served breakfast in our bar area rather than in our restaurant from you for not wanting any further scenes similar to what you created in the restaurant the night before but as you have mentioned this we should explain. After the unnecessary uproar you created in the restaurant during dinner we received several complains about your attitude & rudeness towards staff members which made other guests feel uncomfortable to the point that some guests asked to have breakfast separately the next morning. With this in mind we made the decision breakfast would be served to you in our bar area rather than other guests. Your attitude to our younger members of staff left them on the verge of tears.

We stayed for one night with four friends. Seemed to be run with very limited young staff, but they did an excellent job, very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room was lovely, with a very comfortable bed and stunning views across the countryside. We enjoyed drinks on the terrace and an excellent evening meal. The only problem we encountered was flat tonics for the gin! Cooked breakfast was very good, great sausage.! Would definitely recommend this hotel and hope to stay there again if we were in that area.

The three course meal was 'very good' being well presented and cooked, though not exceptional. The building, decor, setting and ambience was conducive to a very enjoyable experience. The staff were very attentive and pleasant and will certainly visit again in the near future.
