“Let down by the food”
Reviewed 16 December 2013 via mobile

We went for an early Saturday night meal, our first away from our new baby. The staff were very lovely and the venue itself is really very nice however I have to give a poor review due to the food.
The menu, apart from the homemade soup, was straight off a 3663 lorry. The choices seemed to be very old fashioned. My husband had the soup, which he couldn't fault, and I had the prawn cocktail which was basic but nice. For mains, again my husband's roast was nice but I had the filo pie which had been liberally sprinkled with flour, making any flavour there impossible to taste. I did mention this to the waitress. The salmon in the pie was also very watery.
The main issue I had though was later that evening I was very ill so I cannot recommend the food here. It does seem a nice place to go for a drink though.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your food on the evening. I feel that I must seek to reassure any readers that we strive to offer only homemade and home cooked food. Our intension is not be trendy or in any way faddy, we instead aim to provide our customers with good quality popular food. To the best of my knowledge we are one of a very limited number of pubs in the area that prides ourselves on making all of our own desserts from scratch using very high quality ingredients, the Christmas puddings have gone down very well! I am disappointed that you felt the salmon filo was a letdown, we have served in excess of 200 portions during the festive period and this is the first problem I have been aware of. As far as I am aware all filo pastry must be flour coated in order to prevent it from sticking to other sheets of paper thin pastry. I feel that and I would encourage others to contact us if they ever have any reason to suspect food safety issues as soon as possible so that we can investigate immediately. I believe a review of this nature which is purely speculative and unverified to be libellous (IT IS FOR THIS REASON I SHALL BE REQUESTING TRIP ADVISOR TO REMOVE YOUR REVIEW) We have a 5* award for food hygiene independently awarded by the Environmental Health Department.

A really enjoyable evening meal with friends. We all opted for the £11.95 for two courses, food was excellent. It was so lovely to see gluten free options, especially a choice of three GF desserts - so often as a Coeliac I miss out on dessert. The coffee and Tia Marie mousse was amazing, my friends had the Lemon Bombe, which was delicious. The place was busy and buzzing obviously very popular. Fantastic value and friendly, happy staff. As mentioned, brilliant to see gluten free options and so clearly identified on the menu without having to send the staff to check with the chef as to what is ok to eat. Well done to everyone at the White Horse, will be back.

We are really pleased that you enjoyed your time at the White Horse and that you found the Gluten free options enjoyable. We look forward to seeing you again soon. More and more people are taking advantage of the fixed price menu which is great.

We stayed a Friday and Saturday night last weekend with another couple of friends.

We really liked the warm welcome and the warm rooms as it was a cold wet and miserable outside for a fair bit of our stay!

Our two rooms were opposite each other on the upper floor of a building set just back from the main hotel buildings. The views across fields were delightful and we did not experience any road noise problems despite the busy A140 passing the front of the hotel!

The rooms were nicely furnished with all the usual things and were welcoming and warm. The shower was a big walk in unit that worked very well. As they were set in the top of the building (which we asked for) the rooms had slightly odd ceilings that followed the shape of the roof in places - but not a problem for us. Just be careful when getting up in the night!

We ate in the busy restaurant both nights and thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks along with cheerful and efficient service from the team. Breakfasts were excellent, nicely cooked food, well presented and lots of fresh coffee and toast etc.

All in all a great weekend break - we hope to return again to repeat the experience.

Room Tip: They have a selection of rooms, just ask when you book, they were very helpful.

We enjoyed our stay at the White Horse Inn - comfortable, well-appointed bedroom and excellent breakfast, but I wouldn't recommend it to a light sleeper. The ensuite wet-rooms are attractive and the morning shower was bliss, but if you need to spend a penny in the middle of the night you are blasted wide awake by bright lights that are automatically switched on when the bathroom door is opened. There is no way to enter the wet room without triggering the harsh lighting, so if you are someone who would rather creep to the loo in the dark and go back to sleep this might not be the bed and breakfast for you! A shame, if we could have turned off the mechanism it would have been a perfect place to stay the night.

Room Tip: Maybe there are rooms without automatically lit wetrooms?

Thank you for taking time to feed back about your experience at The White Horse Inn. We are currently re fitting our bathrooms as part of a scheme of continuous improvement. All new bathrooms are fitted to a very high spec with under floor heating and LED movement activated lighting which is hugely energy efficient. It was interesting however to hear another perspective on things! We do hope that this will not put you off from visiting again.

Stayed for one evening with my wife.

The bedroom was large and with flatscreen tv and tea & coffee facilities. The bathroom was modern with a power shower and bath. Both were very clean. The rooms are behind the main building so that although you are on the main road, you do not get disturbed by the traffic noise. There is also extra parking behind the main building for overnight parking.

The restraunt has a very relaxed atmosphere and the food was excellent and also very well priced.

Breakfast was quite nice also.

We will definately be staying here again when we are in this part of the country.

First visit and was very impressed. There was a group of us and other family members had said what lovely food they had previous. Friendly staff and plenty of room for our big table.
The whole place was very clean and had a lovely rustic charm. When the food came I could not believe how much you got and even the side salad had a lovely dressing on. We all came out and said we really enjoyed the food and are already planning another visit hopefully before Christmas.

I went here last night for a meal with four friends for a meal to celebrate a birthday and we were surprised at what good value the evening was! We were shown to our table which was a circular one, which is much more sociable than an oblong or square one, this was situated to the rear of the building in a lovely beamed area as the property is 18th century; the dining area was full as obviously very popular and we can now see why! Four of us chose the steak and ale pie, which had a shortcrust pastry top on it and not a flakey pastry one which crumbles everywhere; the other one went for liver and bacon (!) but even that was well presented and looked appertising! All were served with a good portion of fresh veg and chips. For dessert we nearly all had different ones so we could sample each others; the coffee and tia marie mousse was mmmm delicious as was the amaretto ice cream, which was not cold and icy like some icecreams as it was home made with cream!!!! Two courses with tea/coffee for an amazing £10.95! Cheap or what? The staff were all very friendly and helpful and I was particularly impressed with how they were training a new waitress by shadowing her every move. Top marks all round;we'll definitely be back!
