We arrived at the Formule 1 in Vernon on a Sunday evening and used the phone on reception to summon the rather dour male receptionist who immediately questioned me in clipped french as to whether I realised there was no toilet or shower in my room? Maybe he had had problems before and fortunately I understood (and knew that’s how Formule1 hotels work....) The room was average, slightly tired and looked out onto the 24hr filling station of the huge adjacent Intermarché (and it was used constantly!). It is right beside a pizza restaurant but beware...it is closed on Sunday evenings. So we had to drive into the centre of Vernon (an interesting place by the River Seine with many historic buildings had we had more time) where we eventually found a small restaurant and wrestled with slightly tough entrecôte and frites.
Early next morning the area came alive with noisy street cleaners and ‘leaf-blowers’ and we checked out and had breakfast in a café in the Intermarché shopping complex. On reflection a Formule 1 breakfast would have been easier and sufficed. We were however one of the first in the queue to visit Monet’s Garden arriving before the crowds, well worth the visit, a beautiful place! In summary easy but rather drab stop-over, bereft of places to eat, especially on a Sunday.
