Just back from the 6d 2012/2013 New Year Holidays trip, skiing in Are, staying in Renen Hotel. Left unsatisfied with the last and had an average-to-poor experience:
+ hotel is located very closely to the mountain slopes;
- no free wi-fi (costs ~500 SEK per a week) available;
- no hot water boiler available anywhere, except a restaurant which charges you for it;
- rooms are not cleaned during the guests stay, and you're committed to leave them cleared out;
- staff is not very helpful, knows not much on services in local area (not many of them anyway), reception closes at 5-6p.m., turns off the lights in the main hall;
- will charge you for 2000 SEK if you lost your key.

Spent a week here over New year and can say ,for the money, this was an excellent hotel.
Duved is a pretty quiet resort but the town of Are is only 20-30 minutes away on the ski bus or by taxi. The village has a small but well stocked supermarket and a few restaurants and ski shops.
The hotel provides Neilson guests with breakfast,available in the restaurant for all guests a pretty good spread.. tea coffee juices hot choc. bread meats cheeses fruit yoghurt cereal boiled eggs and some cooked food-tho' this varied daily! Evening meals included in the Neilson price, were taken upstairs this was a two course meal served always with salad and bread (on the evening pork was served,and i an allergic to pork,analternative meal was produced)...Just ask! there was tea coffee water and squash to drink for free but the bar was open so you could have a drink.
The rooms seemed to differ for each couple/room.. ours was basic and very clean...there was a shower and most times plenty of hot water above a very small bath! We had no kettle within the room,but when we mentioned this to reception who are open very little! they found one very quickly and supplied us with mugs... the restaurant will supply you with glasses if requested! Other guests had microwaves and hot plates to cook on. We did not get a maild service in our weeks stay,but this is fine.
The skiing is very easily accesible...the ski bus stop is a two minute walk as is the small lift to the main ski slope...busses were regular but sometimes a few minutes late! But it is very easy to get from one ski area to another.The bus is free with your ski pass.
Duved was lovely,not lively but that's what we liked- if we wanted nightlife we could go into Are.I highly recommend this hotel...would I go back???
yes !!

We've just returned from a week at the Hotel Renen. This was a late booking with Neilson - who seem to be the only UK tour operator who go there. I'm pleased to confirm all the positive comments about the hotel and resort. It's a great place for couples or families with younger children who want a quieter location with plenty of easy/intermediate skiing. Party animals in search of 'double black' runs should probably go elsewhere! The resort was experiencing a spring heatwave, and although the lower runs got slushy towards the end of the day there was still plenty of good skiing to be had. Note: the majority of the lifts are T-bars as the resort is susceptible to high winds which can close chairs and gondolas.
We enjoyed the communal meals with the 17 other Brits on the package (aged 7 to 60-ish); there was a set two-course meal each night which was suitable for most tastes, with free juice and coffee. (You could buy alcohol if you wanted it from the bar downstairs.) The breakfast buffet was fantastic. Our only minor criticism is that the daily maid service is quite limited in comparison to hotels in Austria or Switzerland - but this was a much cheaper holiday.
In summary - we highly recommend Hotel Renen and the Duved/Are ski area for an informal, easy-going ski holiday which has a definite Scandinavian flavour.

We booked this hotel as part of a ski package holiday and got very good value for money. It is a peaceful and comfortable hotel, clean & tidy although without the thoroughness of daily room cleaning usual in Austria or Germany. Our room had a very useful kitchinette about the size of a double wardrobe but some rooms don't have this facility and it seems to be luck of the draw if you get a room with one. All rooms had a heated drying cupboard with hanging rails so damp kit dried nicely. I hung all my clothes in there when we unpacked, turned it on for an hour - all creases were gone! Breakfast is vast with lots of choice from Swedish bacon, sausage and scrambled eggs through cereals, breads, meats, etc, etc to pickled fish and fresh onions - not that I tried that! Evening meals on our deal gave no choice but were mostly good, filling and tasty. The hotel faciities are good with a lift, kids play room, good lobby area and a lovely lounge/ library on the top floor with good views of slopes. Reception is only open a few hours a day. The nearest ski lift and ski bus stop is 50m walk. A little supermarket is 2 minutes walk away. We bought hot dogs, burgers, rolls and sauces and took them up the slopes to cook at one of the many BBQ pits provided all around the resort - this is a superb facility along with heated cabins to warm up in & clean toilets at most lifts . Prices were not at all bad - the same as the UK apart from alcohol which is comparable to the more expensive ski resorts- take some with you from UK. All the staff & locals were friendly and spoke excellent English. (Many TV programmes are English or American) All in all a very good hotel in a great ski resort.

My partner and I stayed at this hotel in February 2011. When we arrived at the hotel, the reception was closed, so we were unable to check in until 2.00pm when the reception opened. The reception was only open for around 5 hours a day, and only 3 hours on some days. Once we checked in, we were given our room keys.

PROS:
The reception staff were very helpful, happy and spoke very good english.
Our rooms were very basic, although very clean and tidy.
In our room there was a fridge, 2 hob rings and a microwave including grill, also a sink for washing up. There was a small TV in the corner.
There are 2 saunas(One for men, one for women.)
There is a ski locker room with individual lockers assigned to each room.
The hotel was only a 2 minute walk from the button lift.
It was very warm and cosy inside the hotel.
Staff are very polite, and happy to help(Always tried even if they had trouble understanding you)
Satelite TV in the rooms, and a few english channels.
There is a drying closet in each room to dry wet clothes and boots.

CONS:
On the half board option, there was only 1 meal a night, and no other choices. Although on one night, there was shellfish, and they did provide an alternative on request, as I advised them that I am allergic.
The reception is not open very long hours.
Alcohol is very expensive, but this is a local thing, and not just in the hotel.

In addition to the hotel,there are also apartments, which as far as i understand, you can self cater or half board.

All in all, i would recommend this hotel to others.Although it would improve the hotel if they made a few small changes.

I stayed at the hotel Renen over christmas 2010 with my 7 year old son. Lovely hotel clean, comfey , relaxed, the room we stayed in was advertiesed as a double, but it had a sofa bed as well as the twin beds. The was a small kitchenette in the room very handy and a drying cupboard for ski stuff. The hotel has just had a refit and the reception has been moved. The are comfy sofas in the lobby were you can sit and relax. We stayed half board and i was a worried about my lad who can be fussy, but no problem the food was excellent.
The skiing was great. the is a button lift upto main ski area about 60 meters from hotel, ski school for my lad was very good. The weather was very cold when we were here -20 most days but it did get to -16 once and down to -30 pack hand and feet warmers much cheaper here than buying in resort . buses to the other areas around the resort of Are run evey 30 mins free with lift pass but i never had to show mine kids upto 8 dont need a lift pass as long as they have a helmet .Cant wait to go again.
